Nvidia presents new big update for Nvidia Shield

shield2

When we saw the Nvidia Shield at CES 2012 we were pretty much blown away. A portable Android gaming-machine that also could stream PC-games? Who wouldn’t love that? While the machine itself might not have taken the world by fire it still is one serious cool piece of hardware and even better, Nvidia has kept upgrading it and making sure it gets new OS-updates and new features. Over the last year they have not only updated the OS but also taken the PC GameStreaming out of beta + added a console-mode that allows you to hook up the Shield to a TV and then, using a separate controller (I know – this is a bit weird using a controller to control another controller), simply use it as your little portable game console that also can play PC-games.  Now ot is time for yet another big updated and this update has ... AMD demonstrates full support for DX12 at GDC

As many expected Microsoft showed off the next version of DirectX, DX12, at this years GDC. The new version offers the developers to program even close to the “metall” allowing them to squeeze out even more performance for their games. Among the companies pledging support for DX12 was not only NVidia but also AMD. This is of course not surprising since it would be odd for them not to support a DX-version but to some extend it is interesting to see them pledge full support and talking warmly about DX12 as it is doing stuff their own Mantle-API is supposed to do. Still, the next version of DX12 is not supposed to arrive until some time 2015 so there is plenty of time for the AMD Mantle API to gain acceptance and usage.  SUNNYVALE, Calif. — Mar. 2014 — AMD (NYSE: AMD) announced support for Microsoft® and its revamped graphics application programming interface, DirectX® ... Nvidia introduces the GeForce 800M lineup for Laptops.

NV_GTX_batteryboost-FINAL-smaller_678x452

Nvidia has released information about their new mobile chips in the GeForce 800M-lineup. These chips both come in the form of Kepler and Maxwell-based GPU’s but even the Kepler-based GPU’s will have some new cool features like Battery Boost which is a software/hardware feature that allows the machine to drop the frequencies of parts so that you get decent performance while the battery time is improved a lot. The idea is that while you today can get great performance while you have the laptop hooked up to the wall it usually either offers like 1 hour of battery time when playing untethered. The idea with Battery Boost is that you will trade some performance for a lot more battery time.  Anandtech has written up a great article about the new chips and we recommend reading it.  Link: Anandtech article Related posts: Nvidia GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost – The Missing ... Kingston replaces nand-flash in V300 with decreasing performance as a result

kingston

The Kingston V300 SSD has  been a product with decent performance for a low price. Lately there have been rumblings and mumblings on tech forums that something is up since some users have had really bad performance. It turns out they were right and that the reason is that Kingston has secretly changed the NAND and selected a much inferior NAND chip while keeping the model number and the price. In earlier versions of the V300, including those that were sent to review sites, the Kingston V300 used a Toshiba 19nm Toggle-Mode 2.0 NAND. This NAND has theoretical speeds up to 200 MB/s.  at some point they now have switched to Micron’s 20nm asynchronous NAND which is only expected to get performance to about 50 MB/s, a big difference.  Anandtech did some tests with AS-SSD: Comparison of Kingston V300 Revisions Revision Original (no longer available) New (currently available) Pre-Istalled Firmware 505A 506A ... 10 rare and/or unreleased graphics cards

Ever heard of the Asus HD3850 Trinity card with three(!) GPU’s or the 3DFX Spectre cards? These are two very rare graphics card that never were released and that Thinkcomputers talk about in their cool and interesting little article: “10 Rare and Unreleased Graphics Cards”.  For those of us that have been around since the first 3D-cards were released back in 1995/96 this is a nice trip down the memory lane although even some newer cards qualify like the MSI GeForce GTX 780 Ti Lightning which MSi only built 12 of. Here’s another example:  EVGA GTX 680 2Win Gemini   EVGA and ASUS were battling for the best dual GeForce GTX 680 card as ASUS had their MARS III card (which we showcased on the previous page) and EVGA had their GTX 680 2Win Gemini. The EVGA GTX 680 2Win Gemini packed two GeForce GTX 680 GPU’s inside but only had 4 ... Read More »
