In First Day With Bitcoin, Overstock Does $126,000 in Sales

I am really thinking I might need to start mining. Less than 30 minutes after online retailer Overstock.com started accepting payments in bitcoin, Jason Steele used the digital currency to buy a new case for his smartphone. Steele — a 32-year-old computer programmer from Atlanta who has been using bitcoin since March of last year — wanted to see if Overstock’s new system actually worked, but he was also interested in, well, fighting the good fight. Overstock is the first major online retailer to accept the digital currency, and Steele was doing his part to help push this new-age technology even further into the mainstream, so that it becomes a viable alternative to fiat currencies like the dollar and the euro and the yen. “It’s a concept that could take off, and should take off, for a lot of reasons,” he says. “I want wider adoption. I want more businesses ... Read More »

AMD Kaveri Delivers 20% Performance Improvement

AMD_Logo

During the CES 2014, AMD has officially released the next generation APU, the A10-7000 Series APU codenamed “Kaveri”. We have already know quite a lot about the Kaveri and cannot wait to get our hand at one so we can test it out.  The Streamroller CPU core is an improved version of the Piledriver CPU core found in the Richland. Architecturally, there is not much difference between the two cores except that the Streamroller has a better performance and lower power consumption. The GPU, on the other hand, has a much bigger improvement as it features AMD Graphic Core Next (GCN) architecture that is the same as those found in the current generation of the AMD R7 series Radeon GPU. The GPU shares many of the same technology as the desktop GPU, including TrueAudio, DirectX 11.2, Mantle, PCI Express 3.0 support, and others. Two key innovations with the latest generation ... Asus presents ROG SWIFT PG278Q monitor with G-Sync support

PG278Q

While there have been a lot of talk about 4K-monitors it is easy to forget that those monitors still won’t be a good choice for gamers as basically no video card still can drive them at this time. That is why this new monitor from ASUS is much more interesting too me.  It is a WQHD monitor which means a resolution of 2560×1440. With a 1 ms response time, 120 MHz refresh rate as well as support for G-Sync this is really a monitor that deserves the ROG-brand. SPECIFICATIONSROG SWIFT PG278Q Display: 27-inch WQHD 2560 x 1440 (16:9) Narrow 6 mm bezel designed for multi-monitor setups Pixel Pitch: 0.233 mm Brightness: 350 cd/m² Display Colors: 16.7M Refresh Rate: Over 120 Hz Response Time: 1 ms (GTG) Connectivity: 1 x DisplayPort 1.2, 2 x USB 3.0 ports Stand Adjustments: tilt (+20° ~ -5°), swivel (+60° ~ -60°), pivot (90° clockwise), height ... ASUS Announces Transformer Book Duet TD300

asus_td300

Asus is a company that is not afraid to try new stuff and release weird laptops and phone/tablet hybrids. The new Transformer Book Duet TD300 fits right in with the other weird devices as it is “the world’s first quad-mode dual-operating system laptop and tablet convertible“. Phew.   Basically it allows you to switch between Android and Windows, both in tablet and laptop mode with the push on a button. It comes with a powerful CoreI7 on board giving it tons of power (probably at the expense of some battery time).    Las Vegas, NV (January 6th, 2014) - ASUS today announced Transformer Book Duet (TD300), the world’s first quad-mode, dual-OS laptop and tablet convertible that allows users to switch between Windows and Android in either laptop or tablet modes with just a single push of the Instant Switch button or a virtual key on the tablet. Nvidia presents the Tegra K1 with 192 cores and Kepler architecture

tegra_k1_crop_circle-631x354

Last year at CES Nvidia presented both the Tegra 4 SoC as well as the Nvidia Shield handheld console. This year Nvidia again presented a new iteration of their Tegra-SoC (System on a Chip): the Tegra K1. The big news in the Tegras K1 is not that it is faster than the Tegra 4, it would have been odd if it wasn’t. It is the fact that it uses the Kepler architecture for the GPU-part meaning that Nvidia is slowly merging the architecture of both its mobile and desktop products making it easier for people to develop for it.  So, what can we expect here? The GPU-part now comes with 192 cores and has support for OpenGL 4.4 and even the Unreal 4 engine. In comparison with the Tegra 4 the new Tegra K1 offers new features like real-time computing, global illumination, higher dynamic range and greater detail like reflective surfaces, ... Read More »

Innovega to demo augmented-reality contact lenses at CES

This is some pretty cool tech.   It’s like Google Glass for your eyeball. Inventive startup Innovega plans to show off a high-tech contact lens next week that will float virtual screens filled with information in front of the wearer’s eyes. Called the iOptik system, the two-part system depends on special contact lenses that work as a filter to let the human eye focus simultaneously on things very near and far, using rings that route light in different ways into the retina. Part two is a pair of special glasses fitted with tiny projectors that transmit data forward onto the eyeglass lenses. Read More Here:  Fox News   No related posts. Read More »

Surface Pro 2 get minor update to processor

surface pro 2

Some times it helps not being an early adopter. It seems that Microsoft has quietly given the CPU in the new Surface Pro 2 tablet a nice little speed boost It is The Verge that reports that not 2 months after its release the new Surface Pro 2 tablets that are shipping now comes with a slightly faster CPU that is  clocked at 1.9GHz instead of the stock 1.6GHz Intel i5-4200U chip that originally shipped with the tablet. Sometimes it pays not being an early adopter. Source: TheVerge   Related posts: Ivy Bridge-E is here! Intel Core i7-4960X Extreme Edition Processor Review Intel’s New Ivy Bridge-E Has Landed! Lian Li unveils the Lian Li DK01, a marriage between a desk and a chassi

dk01_1

Lian Li is a company that isn’t afraid to test new things when it comes to computer cases.  Some of you might remember the “Spider”-chassi or the “Train”-chassi. The DK01 prototype that was unveiled earlier this week is basically a desk with an acrylic table top and a drawer for the components.  The table measures 800 mm x 795 mm x 600 mm (WxHxD) and has room for a lot of nice toys. It can handle huge HPTX motherboards and thus can handled basically any other motherboard size you can think of. There is room for up to 14 3.5″ drives (yes, fourteen) and these sit in detachable bays. Removing some of the bays allows us to put in larger motherboards and longer add-on cards. As for PSU’s you can put in PUS’s up to 280mm length. Since the computer sits in a drawer there are som limitations to how high the CPU-cooler ... Read More »

Yikes, “NSA seeks to build quantum computer that could crack most types of encryption.”

This sounds like we are never going to have any privacy. In room-size metal boxes secure against electromagnetic leaks, the National Security Agency is racing to build a computer that could break nearly every kind of encryption used to protect banking, medical, business and government records around the world. According to documents provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, the effort to build “a cryptologically useful quantum computer” — a machine exponentially faster than classical computers — is part of a $79.7 million research program titled “Penetrating Hard Targets.” Much of the work is hosted under classified contracts at a laboratory in College Park, Md.
