Depending on who manufactured your hard drives, there will probably be free software available for download that handles partition transfers.
ones a maxtor (my new one for 50 bucks, hopefully it dont die) and my old one is a WD

i would suggest reinstall windows and all programs and just transfer the other personal files over. Alternative, you can use norton ghost or any program that allows you to clone your hd, but again reinstallation is highly recommended.

norton ghost usually works very well, used that in my tech class for school. but be careful, dont set the rong 1 as primary or u will copy nothing over everything :P

I use Acronis Software Packages. We have reviewed a few here and the work great. At work we have found them to work alot better than Ghost.

I agree. I think Acronis is much intuitive and versatille than ghost.

Also Ghost has bugs (depending on the version used) when transferring from IDE to SATA; you have to look around for the proper switches. I also recommend Acronis. :D It's much simpler to use too.
sweet ima use acronis then, its like 30 bucks but worth it to save time, i already have a brand new copy of windows on this hd (like 3 weeks ago) and i dont feel like doing it all over again

I use Hiren's BootCD (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/hiren.thanki/bootcd.html) and it works great and has a whole slew of nice apps.
Damn I just downloaded v8.3 the other day and there is a new version out, v8.4.

For that sort of thing, I use UBCD (Ultimate Boot CD), but normally I just do a fresh install as I have everything backed up anyway.

UBCD does come in real handy, I always take it along with me when I make service calls. It can pretty much find just about any problem you may have with a PC..................;)
