Hi,

i just bought a XFX Geforce 7950 couple of days ago and also a new Computer, i started to format and all the stuff you do when you are about to setup your computers.
After XP was installed and Service pack 2 installed, i just activated my XP version and then started to install DirectX 9 and the XFX Driver from the disc.
After this i rebooted my PC and as soon as i was able to see the XP Desktop again my PC "beep'd" 3 times (4 times with other drivers i tried later). Next move of me was to watch for recent drivers on www.xfxforce.com but my PC just crashed as soon as i entered this site. Until now i tried several different drivers, newer and older ones, but noting really helped. I also performed Motherboard Bios flash's. I also installed all Windows updates and tried the normal www.nvidia.com drivers (installed the latest drivers for every component in my computer), but the PC keeps rebooting and crashing all the time. I also got one bluescreen already with a memory fault for the file n4_disp.dll or something like this (dont know exactly anymore)

Would be neat if someone could help me.
Thanks in advance

Dear Taylor, I am sorry that you are having difficulties wiht your system. I have looked at the motherboard compatibility list for the 7950Gx2 and your mainboard is not on the list. Here is a link o the list : http://www.nvidia.com/content/geforce_gx2_sbios/us.asp . what I recommend is to contact Asus about your particular set up and see if they have an updated BIOS or if they recommend a particular BIOS and chipset and driver combination to get this card to work in your system. the mainboard compatibility listing does not mean that the 7950 Gx2 will not work but only that those listed have been tested by Nvidia for compatibility. If Asus has a solution please post it here so that we can pass it along to any others who may have the same mainboard

There is no such thing as a "ASUS P2WD5" motherboard.

There is a such thing as a "ASUS P5WD2" motherboard...

The ASUS P5WD2 is on the tested 7950GX2 compatibility list.

I would strongly suspect your PSU as the culprit, it doesn't look to be strong enough to run that graphics card. It's listed as having only 16 amps on both 12v rails, and I am sure it cannot deliver a full 32amps combined. You can try http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php (http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php) to measure the voltage rails on your system, otherwise if you have a more powerful PSU then I would plug it into that system. That processor is also a large power hog to match that two-in-one graphics card.

Ah yeah sorry, i meant P5WD2 of course (with 955X chipset).
I tried something similar yesterday... I used a second PSU with 350W from Enermax just for the geforce card. But i guess i cant be sure now, that the card got enough power right?

I also got the feeling the drivers are "broken" somehow, because before the driver installation everything works fine. Both TFTs gets a signal.
But after that as soon as i enter the display settings or start dxdiag it just crashs and restarts...
On the nvidia site i think i saw that they said to use a PSU of 400W at least.
Problem is i don't really have the money right now to test it :).
Can someone recomment some cheap and good manufacturer and a shop where i could get a PSU with which i can also use 2 7950's?

I don't know of any that would be a better grade/amperage of your current PSU, you'd need to spend $60-$100 for a good one. :???:

I could very well be wrong about the PSU, so I would definitely again suggest you look at your voltage rails, specifically the +3.3, +5, and both +12 rails.

ye i will, as soon as i am at home. What kind of values should i get? Or what is important to look at?
Never really cared about the PSU with my old computer and geforce 4200 and stuff like this :)

When you check your rails on the PSU, they should be around the voltage for that rail plus of minus 5%. You should also check them with a multimeter and not some software program as they NEVER report them correctly. When checking them, you should check them at the end connector for that power line and they should be as stable as possible between idle and load.

Is there any driver you could recommend? i am installing my computer again now and have a revoltec 600W in it now, Dark Power Pro... with 40 amps at the 12's and 5' rail and 28 amps at the 3,3's rail

Try the newest drivers from nVidia's website:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_91.47.html
Or try the previous build here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_91.31.html

I installed the 91.47 driver and everything was okay until i installed 3D Benchmark 2006, it forced me to install the latest version von DirectX 9.0c and after that everytime i try to enter the nvidia graphics menu (the new menu of nvidia drivers) it is crashing everytime..
Is there any fix for this? Cause it is annoying and if there is no solution i will just give my XFX card back.. Cause this problems are really annoying :(

I would suggest you try this program to remove all graphics drivers http://www.drivercleaner.net/ (http://www.drivercleaner.net/), and then reinstall your current drivers. That ought to fix the problem.

Ye thats what i have done, deinstalled old nvidia drivers after the directX install and reinstalled again, it is fine now but well what guarantee i have that i wont have other problems in the near future? :(

Because it's a common problem. No matter what your card is or who made it.

Doing a directx install is a major thing, I wouldn't be surprised that it simply broke something with the drivers. No one can offer a guarantee for that. ;) It's simple enough to fix though.

that problem occures everytime i try to install something and a directX check will be made.

that problem occures everytime i try to install something and a directX check will be made.

Many programs, especially older ones, will prompt the user to install some version of DirectX when they already have a newer version installed in the system. That's not the drivers fault but the program's themselves... installing an older version of DirectX ontop of a newer version is only asking for corruption and problems to occur. Unless I know for sure that the program has a newer version (Such as 3dmark06), then I will simply refuse the DX install. You can always get the most current DX from here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.mspx (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.mspx)
