my 580 crapped out on me and now it only turns on for a split second, jsut enough to get the fans around once

ive checked for shorts, nothing seams to be burnt out, the only thing that wonders me is that one of the heatsinks isnt connected all the way to the board, could this be it? are the heatsinks a part of the circuit?

helpedy im on a 145W compaq psu for backup //_O;

Quickly throw it into the garbage....If I had ANY problem with a $30 PS it would go away (garbage) before it fried anything...

I have one of these just to test stuff on ( I would never run a comp 27/7 on it)
http://www.coolerguys.com/840556026198.html

Its junk compared to my Silverstone and even the Ultra is better..

The heatsinks cool the transistors I think.

Do you mean the heatsink is not connected to the transistor or the transistor is not connected to the circuit board.

The transistor if the black thingy with three prongs connected to the circuit board.

I think the PSU is toast. Franky you should get a better quality PSU.

no the trans are connected nice n tight with the therman pads or w/einbetween
im taking about how the heatsink is also connected to the board, i would think this would be only for extra support, but its on a circuit too and idk if tis significant

It is your Powmax that went bad, right? It's dead and gone if so, most last 4-8 months before dieing and are not worth the time to fix. So I'd agree with Markleb, just junk it and get a good quality PSU.

hmm, yah it was only $30, the 145 im on now actually gives better voltages
but still i need a quick fix that will last me till i can afford a new psu, im scared on this 145 : /

i took out all, yes ALL of my fans and put a stand up fan right next to it so it blows in
it actually works better for cooling :P

but still, i dont want another one potentionaly blowing out my hardware :|

There are plenty of name brand PSUs floating around for good prices. Besides the year long supply of cheap priced ULTRA PSUs everywhere that are decent for standard set ups, Fry's and Newegg usually have some decent ones.

Such as: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817153023 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817153023)

kougar, that one looks sturdy, but i also need something flashy for the lans(not like how i have the greatest hardware to show off:roll:)

im thinking about ripping the red fans out of my demon and poping them in one with blue fans, and giving the blue fans to my friend :P we kinda have a symbiotic relationship, we exchange parts all the time

A BIG NO to Sunbeam or Ultra anything from me...Mushkin PS is good. I really like Silverstone, (this has active PFC)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817256001

Also I won the 550 version of this, its going in my new comp. It has a blue fan and a Amps guage,

Definitely don't buy a Sunbeam, they rate maybe a hair better than a Powmax from what I hear. I know nothing of Apevia, Raidmax, or Vortex, and while Rosewill isn't bad those still seem to tend to die earlier than name brand PSUs as well. That Mushkin should be a really solid one though, even if it is the least flashy of the lot of 'em.

Those Ultras tested decently enough in the last review I saw on them. They would fail if you tried to run a high-end SLI or Crossfire set up on them, but obviously that isn't what they will be running... :)

In a earlier post I said DO NOT GET A ULTRA...

BigD and I got about 4 or 5 of them. (they were on sale from free to $9.99)

For $10 they were ok but not good. 2 of the ones I got had wires not soldered to the circut board and 1 had a bad fan.

They come with a forever guarantee (if you register them) but if they are always messed up what is the point?

Xero (1)ne
09-14-2006, 03:31 AM
yes but that was the $10 model
these are two $60 models that come cheaper in a pair, still debating but tis most definetly going to be better than my $30 powmax and this 145w POS im running on atm

im thinking though, how do you put 2 psu's in one case? mine doesnt have room right now but tha can be changed:twisted:

markkleb
09-14-2006, 03:39 AM
They are the EXACT same model,

One Other PS will be better than 2 of the Ultras.

OMFG MY DAD JUST CALLED:
he is picking me up a $80 black sli certified 500W psu
he didnt say teh brand but i dont care! :D
ill get back to you once it comes in and is in place!

pc_man_iac

See I personally think there is nothing wrong with Ultra, I currently own the 550 Modular one, and it has been running great, also 500 watt black sli certified, could it be the enermax liberty 500?

markkleb
09-28-2006, 04:52 AM
Ultra 500 watt PS were on sale for $9.99 and than free. For those prices they are great FOR A BASIC SYSTEM ONLY. They even have a lifetime guarantee (if you register it).
now they are $19.99
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2271458&cp=&origkw=ultra+products+120mm+500w&kw=ultra+products+120mm+500w&parentPage=search

But if ur going to go SLI or force the PS they will fail. I bought 5 of them and 2 were bad from the beginning.

1 Had a 5V wire unsoldered (I had to resolder it to the circut board) and the other had a bad fan. But for free who cares, I just put in a new fan.

But for $59 - $99 there are a bunch of better PS (like Silverstone)

pc_man_iac
09-28-2006, 04:55 AM
Yeah but for the 69.99 that I paid for mine its on sale at frozencpu.com I can't complain and I read many reviews about ti saying that it was a good psu, I dont plan on forcing it too haerd, I am only running one card for now, and if I am going to crossfire I would likely buy the Tt dedicated 250wpsu for SLI/Crossfire, and use that for my GPU's and the ultra for everything else

You'd better find out the manufacturer name... just because it's 500W doesn't mean its 12V rails can handle SLI, even if it's labelled "SLI certified" ...gotta be careful about SLI certified wording as well, companies can be pretty trickly now-a-days ;)

my dad went above and beyond on this one;-)
cooler master 550W(yes 550w) CM Real Power
http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/Products.aspx?pid=1170
its a freaking beast! i swear it added 20 pounds to my whole tower
and that is a very reasurring thing

but the power meter at the front says im barely pushing 100W
but that makes me even more peace at mind knowing that this will handle my box very nicley and be good in the future:wink:

too many cables, but i just tucked them away behind the mobo tray and its all good. my voltages are increadible and the fans are faster then ever

the blue surprised me when it fit so well with my red neons(on and off) im so happy that i can sleep well at night now and not worry about it blowing up when folding :D

BTW I wouldn't trust the power meter as it is not exact. Google some reviews and you can find out.
