This for my sons build and I haven't been following HD all that much. This is what he's asking.
I'm looking into purchasing a new drive now for it, and I figured i'd
double check before purchasing one. What drives would you reccomend? I'm looking for speed over storage here, but storage is still a considering factor. I basically want something new and fast to be the boot drive of this computer.
I recomended this one:
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s

I have been using 4 Hitachi 80 gig Sata2 in a Raid0 and they were faster than 2 or 3 Raptors in Raid0 (especially for $46 ea.)The only prob with the Hitachis is you need a Hitachi Tools program to change them from Sata1 to Sata2.

My newer builds use 3 of the WD 160s with the 16MB buffer. Nice and quiet but not as fast as the 4 Hitachis.
I read a bunch of reviews on the 7200.10s and most of them say they are good (but run hotter) As long as they are cooled they are fine. One review said it was as fast as a Raptor.
Maxtors = Bad (fire!)

Can't say I'm fond of Maxtor, fires or not. I've got mostly WD 16mb buffer SATA 2s plus a couple Hitachis. Love the WDs, they are fantastic for the price. If I had to buy another at this point, I'd probably give the newer Seagates a go.

Maxtors are totally out the picture, we both have had them before, although I haven't had any real problems with them, they don't seem to match the performance of some of the other big names.
I myself like the new Seagates as I said in the OP, but have never used them myself. I'm not sure right now which case is going to be used for this build so I haven't a clue as the cooling the HD's will have, and my son always tends to pack a bunch of junk into his system's so it may end up being a heat box, so heat my sooner or later be a issue.

I think my son is going with a Seagate, not sure which one though, but I sent him all the links. I guess he's a grown man and decide on what one best fits his needs...........:) He's hoping to have all the parts by this weekend so I can finish putting it all together for him. Now just to figure out if he wants water cooling or not........;)

SEAGATE all the way! I've been a Seagate fan since my first 6.4GB Seagate. Great HD, even if it ran hot...
I've tried Maxtor, it died on me within 6 months... and my friend's Western Digital died within 8 months... I've never had a problem with any of the Seagate HD's I've owned, 'nuff said! ;)

Seagate 250GB or 320GB 7200.10 perpendicular is IMO those that give the most for your money. (All depends of the store's prices - sometimes the 250GB is the cheapest/gig, sometimes the 320GB)

I think he went ahead and ordered the 250GG Seagate, I'm not 100% sure though. I'll have to wait till he brings all the parts out to put the thing together to find out for sure.
