lets say 2.3ghz core (2) duo and 512mb ram
2.ghz with 1gb ram
or 1.8ghz with 2gb ram

Depends, are all of those Core 2 Duos? 1gb will be fine for moderate work, 2gb is best if you plan to game or use the machine as your main system.

Usually when looking at laptops I'll notice it's never worth paying for a RAM upgrade... and often better to opt for a single stick of 512mb or 1gb so all you have to do is buy just one stick yourself to then double the capacity. Some companies allow the configuration for just a single module.

i was talking to soem1 else, he said that its better to get the lower ghz and more ram, cuz u dont drain as much battary life as fast with the lower clocked cpu

I'd disagree, it's a good generalization, but not always true. All Intel processors will underclock to the same 800mhz, depending on the specific model but regardless of speed. Both a 1.6ghz and 2.33ghz Core 2 Duo would underclock to the exact same speed on the exact same voltage, and can be locked there when using battery power only.
