512MB XFX 7950GT XT, PCI-E (x16), Mem 1460MHz, GPU 570MHz, 24 Pipes, 2xDual Link DVI-I/HDTV
(i was thinking this psu would it be enough)
580W HiperPower Type-R Modular Blue PSU Quiet Dbl Fan aPFC ATX2.2 20/24 Pin (RoHS)
And im putting a Akasa AK-961 Intel LGA 775 on the cpu.

The big question is what kind of price range are you stuck with staying in? There are alot of good power supplies out there and do not be fooled by one saying it has 600 or 680 watts when it comes down to it the 12Volt rails suck.
Please let us know the price range and we can recommend several.

he would probably need quiet a bit of power since he would probably want to sli those 7950's down the road

Yeah I was thinking the Corsair or Mushkin 650's.

If price is a concern, the 650W Antec TP3-650 is only around $100 and has three very-stable power rails.

I've had great luck with XClio PSU's, they are made by Channel Well, the same company that makes Antec and Thermaltake's new modular high power power supplies. They are normally a bit cheaper than the Antec and Thermaltakes, but I haven't a clue as to what they run in the UK.

Here's a link to the 650w model over there in the UK.

Not as pretty as the US model with all the sleeved cables and the like, but still a good power unit.

I think that Hiper are fine, I had one when they first came out and it's now in my sons system. There are a few things (options) that they don't have here in the US model that is preffered these days, like Active PFC, which from what I understand is standard over in Europian models. The other is that they don't suppoert dual PCI-e video cards natively. And the last is, and I don't kbnow if your MoBo requires it, is EPS 8 pin CPU power line.
If you 100% know that you will never require a second PCI-e power line, I see no problem with Hiper, I have mind for well over a year or so and the rails were completely stable and never had a single issue with the unit.

The PS that Scott recommended are among the best. The PS that Sbrehm recommended is pretty nice too (has a 14cm fan) but it sounds like you want something flashy. I would get a plainer pS and add flash to the rest of the comp.
the Hyper is ok, some people say the modular PS are not as good because of the extra connections they bring.
Since the PS is the backbone to your system I would buy the BEST one possible.
I like Silverstone

Notice the insides, they are VERY WELL designed.

This is from Hipers web site, so make sure that you do not require the 8 pin EPS 12v power lead.
4.HIPER Type R 580W series does not support Intel Pentium Extreme Edition CPU (dual core) as it requires EPS12V (i.e. an 8 pin ATX +12V connector). Type R 580W series does not provide 8 pin ATX +12V connector. We do not recommend using any adaptor that allows conversion of any form of connectors into 8 pin ATX +12V connector.

Here's a shot of the one I had installed in my system. The modular conectors are amoung the best out there. As long as the unit supports your MoBo, it is a great PSU.

Pat123
09-18-2006, 06:52 PM
orite so the hiper one is good for my system i dont need anything amazing just its a nice price and seems to be pretty stable. But with modular is there a larger risk of shorting.?
Bio-Hazard
09-18-2006, 06:59 PM
Not really any risk of shorting, modular connectors just add a slight bit more resistance to the power lead. 99.999% of the time it will never cause any problems

And I thought Gigabyte already did a job compressing an ATX size board down into an oddball size with the DS3... that S3 is even smaller still, and more than not resembles a extended mATX form factor.
Most of the higher end Core 2 Duo boards require a EPS12 connection, but the S3 doesn't. However if you are expecting moderate to high overclocks then I'd suggest you upgrade to the DS3 model. :)

09-19-2006, 08:35 AM
ok thanks. i might do that so is the DS3 a EPS12v?? or is it (i think) 4pinn (maybe wrong lol..)
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=450650
is this a decent board
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=433275
or that lol. and aslong as its under 110 uk pounds i can get it.
markkleb
09-19-2006, 08:58 AM
sweet, its a 4pin also..And a lot of people agree it OCs a lot...
(thats why Kougar is the Intel OC Master..)

Ok this is an off topic question, but the cpu gets it power from the motherboard it dosent directly connect to the powersupply? so the

The Hiper 580W seems like a great choice, though the Mushkin 650W is VERY TEMPTING ...but also costs a fortune...:(
I still haven't decided which one to buy for myself, as I'm still thinking about getting myself this AMAZING Mushkin 650W PSU  (but then, I'm risking myself by getting killed by my wife...)

I would not suggest that Abit motherboard, and the MSI is more of an unknown but it is a solid board. I've seen some OC pretty spectacularly, but I don't know if that is the average or the exception. The features between the DS3 and MSI Neo are pretty different though, ya should go with whichever meets your needs.
Very nice choice on that PSU, good quality and high efficiency with Active PFC.
