Did you see this?
0 Db Ion Cooled Computer (http://inventgeek.com/Projects/IonCooler/Overview.aspx)
I've been waiting for someone to try it out for a while, but have been staying away because of the voltages involved and the idea of shooting electrons into my hardware... :) It's not for the beginner electrician.
Glad to see it works so well! I do have some doubts about some of the claims... 325 CFM? 0 Db? Sounds impossible, how could you measure 0 Db? Even at SPCR they say the background noise in any room is several decibels, 16 or something...
But hey, silent computer + pure air = when is Antec or Coolermaster coming out with an ion cooling module? :)

Hey that does sound real cool. But it would have been better if he included actual temps and maybe some oc trials. It seems a bit fishy to me.

Caught a bit of that, apparently it's only in proof of concept stage. Would be quite a while until it's out I think. Would be pretty neat though!

Sorry Mirrim, you're thinking of ion cooling of CPUs, but this guy apparently used an air freshening unit to do the same thing to his whole case. He's using a normal fanless heatsink on his CPU. Go read the article. :D
I'm thinking he got the 325 CFM figure from the marketing material that came with his air ionization unit, it's probably not what actually makes it through his case...

Im pretty sure 325 is impossible.
His intake is the whole front and the only exit is a a few tiny holes in the back.(lol, he didnt even open the exits)
Where is the 325CMF air supposed to go?
If he had even close to 325 his case would blow up like a balloon.
Its false, but I bet the air inside the comp is cleaner...
When you buy a fan thats rated at 50CFM thats under IDEAL conditions. NOTHING in the airs way(wires, boards,HDDs etc) And also as long as the air pressure is not higher inside than outside. Or the fan is trying to blow against an invisable wall. Its important for good cooling that the air can exit as fast as it enters or the fan wont blow as advertised.

Yeah, I bet even the humidity in the air affect the CFM a fan can push. They must take measurements in wind tunnels that are drier than a witch's tit.
Seriously, I read the article, and then I looked around to see if it was posted on april 1rst or something, but couldn't find anything. The thing might really work (that's a pretty big opening to let the air in!) but nowhere near the performance he's listed...

I like reading new stuff, its good to think out of the box.
But this is baloney, it cant possibly work. Most of the new Ionic filters now use fans (cause the old models wouldnt move practically any air).
And as to the comercials where they wipe the black dust off the rods, if you let anything lay around for a while it will get dust built up on it.
I think this is a bogus idea that plays to Trekies, anything with the word ION in it must be cool.
Pretty soon we will see "Warp Signature" or "Phase Particle" air filters...

LOL you had me laughing and choking there for a minute!
Anyhow, I think temperature plays a role as well. (well, it's a bit linked to humidity as well actually)

By Jove I think you've got it! Let's teleport the heat outside of the computer! eh. :)

Hey, I'm a Trekie! :-P
And I also own two of these ionic air cleaners... (Well, three, but one needs repair) Amazing what you can find at a flea market, eh?
Anyway 325CFM is made up. Regardless of IF that # is in the product documentation, one of the main problems with an ionic air cleaner is the very low airflow rate. I would estimate my midsize unit puts out maybe 10CFM at absolute best case scenario, and maybe just a degree or two cooler than the air flowing into it. I have two silent ~13CFM Coolermaster 120mm fans that do the same thing more efficiently and require no modding or controllers.

Ooops, thanks for the correction on that. I was thinking of a blurb on CNN I had heard. <blush> And by the way, you guys are silly ;P

I would not play with ions, I hate ion filters, there's no more dust in the air, instead it's everywhere : floor, walls, furniture, objects, ceiling. Just need a week, and there's already a lot of it.

Well, we're guys. What's your point? :)

Yeah, they are. ;)
Maybe I should also have mentioned I tried both Coolermaster ~13CFM fans in an Antec case with an old Northwood. Even with the PSU fan helping exhaust air, and a Zalman 7700Cu on the CPU, the system eventually got way to hot. A single ionic breeze or knockoff wouldn't be capable of reaching that level of airflow.
So I'd say he's flat out making it up. It is impossible to cool a much hotter chip with less case airflow, let alone a much hotter CPU+CPU. Either they were idling, or throttling back pretty hard...

OH YAH?!?!?
well i bet im getting at least 75cfm with my super fan mod!
(coming to a forum near you...once i fix my camera that be...)

Ionic colling , isnt it suppose to be used for future spca shuttles or something, anyways wats next turbine cooling

Turbine cooling? Hmmm...
You know, if you move the computer, you don't have to move the air! :) How about a gyroscopic cooling system, like those giant accelerators used to test fighter pilots? Just spin the computer around and around for hours :)
But I don't think it will be very quiet... Especially if you bump into it in the middle of the night, ouch!

you'd might want a cablefree system then

I still have this image of a Scythe Ninja flying off the motherboard and impaling itself into the wall or LCD screen stuck in my head...

Looks like they are giving it another try!

This time one added benefit is that it will kill your cats as they stick their curious noses in there to see why their fur is getting all staticky!
But imho it still doesn't work. :| Has anyone tried it?
