Sony's entry-level PS3 gets a price cut before launch

Console gamers in Japan were able to breathe a slight sigh of relief today when it was announced that Sony would trim the price of the basic 20GB PlayStation 3 console to 49,980 yen or $430 USD (down from $499 USD). The price cut is a direct response to the cries from the buying public over the high price of entry for the PS3 in comparison to its competitors. It was also announced that the base system would get HDMI output.

Even with the price reduction, the base PS3 is still priced well above its competition. It was announced two weeks ago that Microsoft would introduce the XBOX 360 Core System for the Japanese market at around $255 USD. Last Thursday, Nintendo announced a price tag of $212 USD for its Wii in Japan.

Sony's Ken Kutaragi remarked to reporters that "The Japanese users and media would not stop saying a price tag of over 60,000 yen, including tax, was too expensive." One must also remember that Kutaragi was also quoted as saying back in May that the $499/$599 price points were "probably too cheap."

It should be noted that while the price cut affects the 20GB PS3 model, there is no word on if the price will also fall on the higher spec'd PS3 with its 60GB hard drive, WiFi, and MemoryStick/SD/CompactFlash reader. There is also no word as to whether this price cut will extend to PS3s destined for US shores.

I started to wonder if Sony would try and not cut the prices to the US market, but I just figured the resultant uproar would cause to much trouble for them if they tried... ;)

Thats still a big chunck of change though, $400+ for the entry level? Really seems Sony is setting itself up for a big dissapointment with the PS3.

Not trying to be rude... but fans of consoles like to tout it's "PC" or "better than PC" specs... well those PC specs don't come cheap!

Sony has also added HDMI to the low-end console as well now.

I know that, but I think for the general market, I think the Sony is priced too high. Sony just really seems to be bumbling along lately and pissing people off. I'm not fan of any Sony product since they have long fallen off quality and are riding along on their name recognition from the past.

TGS 06: No US PS3 price drop
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6158499.html

"SCEA president Kaz Hirai says that Sony has "no plans" to lower the current $499/$599 American PS3 price points; 20GB PS3s will have HDMI worldwide."

BASTARDS!!! Why would Sony be worried about the Japanese market, where everyone just gobbles up whatever Sony tells them?! :?

TGS 06: Analyst: PS3 price drop a sign of 'weakness'
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6158341.html

"US-based analyst reacts to new price for 20GB PlayStation 3 in Japan; calls it "a questionable business decision."

Hell yeah! ...and the Sony backlash continues.

LOL, the only thing Sony seems to excel at is getting themselves in trouble... I think more than one of two people over there need to be replaced... as the only track record they have is pretty downward sloping. Better sell yer Sony stock right after the PS3 debuts, before it nosedives back towards the ground. :-P

...which will allow others like myself to snatch up some Sony stock for dirt cheap :P ...they'll bounce back, it's just a matter of time ;)

I honestly don't know...the only way the are gonna bounce back is by replacing some high up decision makers. The have had some serious screwups and PR disasters as of late.

True enough, but Sony is waaay too huge to let a PS3 flop take down the whole company... I know that PS income is a huge part of Sony's overall $$$, but it won't ruin them (hopefully though, it will knock some sense into them!) ;)

Yeah, but if you really look at the equipment they sell, the PS3 isn't the only problem. Go back a few years and Sony home audio equip was top notch, but you will be hard pressed to find many things today that are top notch in that category with a Sony name on it....aside from maybe some TVs.

True enough... UMD, SACD (or was it the other CD format?) or Betamax anyone? :? (I was a Betamax fan... it was a better product than VHS by far but fell to crappy marketing and a large VHS userbase)

That said, Sony is taking a HUUUGE gamble with the PS3, and the PSP isn't far behind I'm afraid :?
