It should be blowing out the back. Also if you remove the cooler make sure the paste is still on and even. If you mess it up clean it of and put it on again.

It looks like it's mounted backwards to me... Look at page 3 of your zalman manual, the picture at the top. The fan is designed to push air through the fins and then out the back of the machine, not pull air through.

So basically the fan should be at the front.

I have a NZXT Nemesis case with a Pentium IV oc'd to 3.3 Mhz, and I use software to set the fan speed. At idle, the cpu is 34 c, and the fan is stopped. When playing games, the cpu is 41 c with the fan at 100%.

You could leave the heat sink that way if you don't feel good about turning it around, but the fans are fighting each other. Maybe your CPU would be cooler if you stopped rear fan! The paste is really important, if you don't get an even layer after pulling the heat sink out, the better thing to do is to remove the old thermal paste and put in some new one.

Hope this helps. :)

Exactly what Enigmachine said, it looks like you have it backwards from the arrows you drew. For it to blow air out the back of the case, the fan must be face your RAM.

For future reference upload your pic(s) to imagshack (imageshack.us) or imagevenue (imagevenue.com) so your pic(s) are clickable thumbnails like this:

As eveyone mentioned make sure the fan is blowing air toward the back of the case so the exhaust fan blows any hot air out of the case. By the looks of things you have is backwards. Just flip the cooler 180 degrees.

as long as its pretty new you should be fine, just make sure its even. As it gets older (the paste) it begins to thicken.

And dude your avatar would be sweet to cut into a side window...

If you think the thermal paste has cured/harden why not just reapply it? Unless you don't have any lying around.

Yeah that Thundercats logo would be sweet in a window.

You could but most people will tell you its not recommended to reuse thermal paste that has cured/hardened; performance won't be on par. I suggest you reapply thermal paste if you plan on taking the cooler off.

Whenever a cooler is replaced you should always reapply thermal paste if the old thermal paste has cured/harden.

Its BEST to clean it off and start with new, but if you dont have any and the paste is only a day or 2 you can try to reuse it.
The pastes are all different, some stay thin for a long time some dont.
