I never gave previous version a try but I might give this latest RC1 build a go.
Microsoft releases Vista Build 5728 to testers

Microsoft today released a new build of Windows Vista to beta testers. Build 5728 comes just three weeks after Microsoft released Vista RC1 (http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=4036) (Build 5600) to testers. The download weighs in at 2,622.25 MB for the x86 build and 3,628.64 MB for the x64 build. Beta testers can grab Build 5728 from Microsoft Connect (http://connect.microsoft.com/).

According to a blog post (http://blogs.technet.com/windowsvista/archive/2006/08/29/452652.aspx) last month over at the Windows Vista Team Blog, the 57xx builds are reserved for Release-to-Manufacturing (RTM).

So while things are going swimmingly for Microsoft’s US release of Window Vista, the company still has some issues to resolve in Europe. The European Union is breathing down Microsoft’s neck (http://dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=4137) while Adobe and Symantec aren’t too far behind (http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=4259).

3,6GBs for the x86-64 version!!

A 98SE install, cleaned up with 98lite weights 40MBs and boots in 5 secs. If you add unofficial upgrades to 98, you can run some XP compatible software not running on 98, put the XP skin, etc. That's VERY efficient, but not an as good eye-candy as Vista.

"Windows 98 Lite" was a pretty buggy build that doesn't work out of the box and couldn't even access the internet when I gave it a try, without having to have parts that were stripped out of it installed back in.

And I'd like to see a fully functional Windows 98se last for two months like XP can before being restarted or needing to BE restarted... ;) Which is one more plus with Vista, Vista can restart segments of the OS so that user can avoid having to reboot the whole machine during installations or upgrades. I've not once had to reboot when installing graphics drivers, for instance.

Once everything is installed, Win98 doesn't need to be restarted when you've got a stable machine. Great, Microsoft FINALLY decided to do like Linux does, just reload what you need instead of restarting.

Just DL both will test later...
i like the idea that they are giving it to 10PCs now and not 3

....um, that's a walking contradiction, isn't it? :P NO machine is stable with Win98 installed as the OS ;) :P

I wonder why everyone is telling this, I had MUCH more trouble with XP and 2K than 98SE!(On an Athlon XP) I think it's just that P2 & P3 generation were not very stable machines.

We're saying this because we've had personal experiences to back it up, maybe?

In my case I used the same machine with win98se for years. It currently has Win XP Pro installed on it folding away in a back room. I never did get the thing to last more than a week with win98se, and XP runs for weeks on end, even over a month if the power doesn't go out first and reset it.

:? Maybe it's due to all the tweaks I keep applying on it.(One of them is in French only and the site has been closed because the thing had files from the WinME CD included in it w/o permission. 98SE2ME needs you to have an ME CD, so this one is legal.

ARGH! Do not even mention the DEVIL that is WinME!!! It's AT LEAST 10x WORSE than Win98!!! What a piece of sh*t "OS" :( I bought the WinME upgrade thinking it would solve all of the Win98 issues, and ended up uninstalling that junk less than a month after installing it!

True, WinME is worse, 98SE2ME claims that you get the fixes of WinME without the trouble when putting the files on 98SE, I hope that it's true!
