Intel has a very nifty little program for their processors! Intel Thermal Analysis Tool (http://www.techenclave.com/forums/intel-thermal-analysis-tool-79067.html)will not only monitor both internal die temps, but allow direct control of each individual core's throttling controls. You can throttle back one of both cores as you please.
Also this program will alert you to when the processor itself is throttling back due to overheating. And speaking of overheating... this application is much better than Prime95 or Orthos or CPU Burn! at heating up a Core 2 Duo! I received a ~7-9c increase in both die temps over dual-Prime95 use alone in a matter of one or two minutes.
While this program labels a C2D as a "Pentium M", if you examine the process names under task manager it will display "MeromMaxPowerVerOP3" which indicates it knows which uArch it's working with.

Been using it for a couple of weeks now, excellent product!

looks like a very neat tool. however, kouger, wouldnt 50 degrees be too hot?

Not when he has it ocd to 3.24mghz thats pretty decent plus that is at completely full load and prolly as hot as it gets correct??

I think they will go to 80C before they throttle down.

Slight correction, those are not my screenshots. They're from the thread I directly linked to! ;)
One thing that I really think needs to be cleared up, is that the Core 2 Duo has internal temperature diodes/sensors inside each core. I think the newer K8 cores have this as well, but I am not sure. Otherwise all other processor readings that measure the cpu temperature use the readings from the diode under the CPU socket.
This program, like CoreTemp and a handful of others will read the internal die temps and NOT the temp of the diode that the motherboard uses to measure the CPU. Because these diodes are in the core they will show a much more accurate hotter temperature.
For example, while this program reports both cores as being 60c & 63c right now, using the old method the CPU temp is reported as only 49c. So really, if you want to compare C2D temps to older processors or what is "norm", you would have to use the old method of using the diode in the socket, it will always read a lower temperature, usually ~10c lower than what the actual die temp is at.
For the 3.5ghz overclock, after 24 hours and 24 minutes of dual Prime95 with 1.475v I was getting temps between 63-70c using TAT and CoreTemp. Using Speedfan and Gigabyte's EasyTune5, I was getting somewhere about ~55c.
I set the CPU fan to it's lowerest speed to see if that would knock the OC unstable, and the interal die temps reached ~75c before holding. According to TAT no thermal throttling was occuring, so I am pretty sure Scott has the correct number, the C2D should throttle at 80c going by the internal die temps.
TAT is pretty fun, you can run 1 core at 3.5ghz, and run the second core at 1ghz... System didn't even produce an error in Prime95, although one of them was running circles around the other...

Looks like a neat 'lil program. Will have to remember trying that one out when i hook up my cousin with his new rig.

That's a pretty cool program you've stumbled across, Kougar, thanks! ;) Does anyone think that it will work with a Pentium D CPU? I don't see why not, as it has 2 cores as well...

It does not work with Pentium Ds, sorry Tomato ;) I remember reading a post in the XS forum thread where it refused to run on a Pentium D 805... and it also refused to run on my old Pentium 4 Northwood system.

Ok so where is my damn nForce 590 board and my case? I am ready to build me a rockin machine!!

Tomato: I just confirmed that TAT does not support any Pentium CPU's.
Gee Scott, what's taking you so long? I think just about EVERYONE here in the forum has a C2D system now. Where's yours? :)

I don't have a C2D system! <mock sobs> ;p

I have to be able to run SLI for my testing, Miles is running Cross-Fire capable and I am SLI capable so we can compare results.
I refuse to go nForce 4 for Intel so I am waing for the 590 for Intel.

Well since you and Miles are so tied to your dual-card systems, I would be happy to review your C2D system boards. :)
See the lengths I would go to just to accomodate you two?
