Hi guys!!!

That's a VERY BAD day for me.

Yesterday, when I was about to install my new 7900GT cards, I first installed my new Mushkin 650W PSU, but I accidently conntected the H.D Power Cable (at the side of the PSU, since it's a moudlar PSU) the OPPOSITE way.

So...I just FRIED my HD!!!:(

I don't know how I could do such a stupid thing, but that's thr fact!!! And now I'll have to buy a new HD, and beside that, ALL my precious data is
LOST!!! (I did a backup only 2-3 monthes ago...:().

So...that's the status for now. Probably I'll buy a new HD in a day or two, and meanwhile, I haven't even installed my new cards yet...:(

Anyway, wish me good luck (I'll surely need it) and of course, I'll keep you updated.

Sorry for your trouble, they should make those connectors harder to mess up. I have done the same thing several times, I know ur pain...

Yeah...thanks mate...

Anyway, I really hope I damaged ONLY the HD, as after I switched the cable, I could post and log on to the BIOS menu, but then I got that "SAD" message: "NO SYSTEM DISK"...:(

I've already tried to connect the HD (Maxtor SATA 120GB) on a different PC and it is totally NOT RECOGNIZED!!! So I'm pretty sure the HD is DEAD!!! :( I just hope that when I'll install a new one, I won't find any more problems/damage...:???:

It's not the lost of H.D that hurts, but of course, the precious data on it...:(

Actually it sucks that it even is possible to do this. In my opinion it should be vital that you never could insert a cable up-side-down. Not good.

Yeah, believe me IT SUCKS!!! :(

Now I'll probably buy today a new Maxtor/WD 250 SATA II H.D.
I'll have to re-install everything from the beginning and try to retrieve some of my data from backups I've made 2-3 months ago...

And then, only then, I'll install my new 7900GT cards...:???:

I am Sorry for you - it is a apin in the ass to lose so much data & HD.
Remind me to do more frequent backup.
Hope everything will get back to place in no time.
and i agree with SwedBear - Cable should only have one option of inserting.

Yeah, well, that's gotta hurt
Sorry to read your post.
I, luckily, connected my Mushkin 650W with no problems...
I hope it will all turn out fine eventually.

GOOD LUCK!

Man that's a shame that you fried your HD............:( It must have taken a lot of force to get the power cable pushed in the wrong way??????? Or was it pushed on just far enough to make contact and not clip into place.
All that should have died is your HD, there's nothing else that really could have fried.

Sorry for your loss.

I really didn't use too much force, I just plugged the 6pin plug the opposite way (of course, it didn't attach using the clip, but I didn't notice this "small" issue...:???:).

Anyway, thanks for the cheer up...my friend!!! I really hope that you're right and nothing else was fried, as after I plugged the cable correctly, I could still post and log on to the BIOS menu.

Anyhow, I'll know for sure after everything will be installed and working again...:???:

So...I'll be heading the store in a few hours and buy a new 250GB (or maybe a 320GB H.D) and then starts the "big work"...re-installing everything...

I'll keep you updated,

i think he connected the hdd one to the psu, the psu one to the hdd, I didnt even know that was possible I am gonna double check my psu to make sure it is all good

GIBSON

Nah, he has a modular PSU. You have to connect the cables to the psu yourself, but if you connect the cable to the psu upside down, well, voltages are switched so goodbye hdd

I too have a modular PSU, that would be why I said that

I am good and safe I checked mine they were all fine (I knew what was right because if I input the side where it had 2 I would be a retard) it was the 4pin mobo one i was worried about, along with the GPUone

Yeah, ran into this problem with my Antec NeoHE modular PSU... doesn't help that the PCIe 6pin connectors are identical to the end that plugs into the PSU either.

Sorry to hear about the HDD Zachig... I hope your new PSU is fine. You might want to look through the grills/fan to check those caps inside and see if the tops are intact.

DragonMaster

Sad to hear about that design problem with a so expensive PSU. My Enermax doesn't allow me to plug wires backwards, to plug molex plugs in PCI-Ex plugs or the opposite. Dual-row Molex 6-pin plugs don't look very good tho.

Another HD goes to heaven; sorry to hear the news zachig but I can't believe how you did that as its impossible unless you forced it in.

Another reason to double check all cable to ensure they are connected the right way. Lets hope your bad luck doesn't continue with your 7900GTs.

:P i did that one time with the regular connectors
it was an old drive and it woudnt go in any which way so i just decided to shove it in(big mistake)
i never knew they could produce so much smoke :O
i was lucky it was a small(like 2gb?) blank drive(or at least i dont remember losing any data...)

this time get a seagate and make sure those connectors are plugged in right :D

we all learn from our mistakes
example:
*dumps bucket of water on computer* hmmm better not do that again...*writes notes*

but wuht you can do is you might be able to send your disk into one of those super recovery places, if the actuall disk is fine, it should be cake for those guys ;)
plugging the connectors in backwards would fry the little board on there before damaging the disk at all right?

good luck to you, and many wishes to a prosperous computer in teh future
those 7900GT's sure do sound tasty:twisted:

Lets hope your bad luck doesn't continue with your 7900GTs.

Yeah, I really hope so...:roll::mrgreen:

Anyway, here's an update:

I finally ended up buying a WD SATA II 250GB H.D.

I actually preffered Seagate, but that's was the only 250GB/320GB H.D in stock.

So, I've already formatted it and opened my Acronis Backup Image (from 3 months ago...:???:).

Some issues:

1. I made a boot using Acronis "Boot Rescue" disc.
2. Then, when trying to restore the image, I was told that "no hard-drive were recognized). I think that's because it's a SATA H.D...:???:
3. So...I had to make a CLEAN install of Windows on Drive C:, then installed Acrinus TrueImage program and opened the image on Partition D:, since I couldn't open the image through windows on the Active C: partition.
4. Then, in Acronis Partitioning application, I've deleted partition C: and made partition D:, the 1st partition.

My questions are:

1. Windows seems to work OK now, so is it OK to keep it like that, or should I install my new H.D on a different pc with another H.D and then restore the image directly to partition C: of my H.D?
2. Currently, the image is opened and working on Partition C:, which I've resized back to 33GB, while I have additional two partitions, D: and E:, which are totally empty (100GB each). But since I originally opened the image on partition D: and just then, changed it to C:, will it have any effect on Windows and/or general performance?
3. Where do you think the restored data is now located/stored? At the beginning of the H.D, or in the middle?

Please advice...:???: (sorry for double-posting...)

I've done something similar ghosting the same old install of XP around across drives and system rebuilds... If I followed you correctly you have the old copy of XP from the backup running in your 33gig drive c partition, right? If so I don't see any problems, usually I never had any unless I tried to make drive X (Any drive other than the original "C") the master boot partition. In which case many things were broken as many links would get this issue where the old C:\Documents and Settings\Kougar\My Documents\ did not equal the changed D:\Documents and Settings\Kougar\My Documents\

But with your setup, I don't see any issues cropping up... :) I don't understand your last question though...

Thanks... I think you got me right :???::roll:.

What I meant was, that I initially restored the Image on Partition D:, because I did it within Windows while Partition C: was active (because I was running from Windows), and ONLY then, I went back to DOS and deleted partition C: (so actually, partition D:, became C: now) and then recreated a new empty Partition D:

So I was thinking that since I first restored the image on Partition D:, the data is physically stored at the "middle" of the H.D...

I hope that now you got me right...

Still waiting to hear some more advice/ideas...

In addition, do you know why Acronis Boot Rescue Disc doesn't recognize my SATA H.D? (I'm using Acronis True Image 8) :???:

Is there a way to make it recognize my H.D, so I'll be able to directly restore the image on Partition C: ???

Same thing happens here, I was told I was lucky to get a 7200.10 320GB, the guy told me that the Seagate HDDs are very popular. WDs are pretty good HDDs too!

You could probably restore your backup on your new drive from an other computer I guess.

Do you have the RAID BIOS enabled? That's the only way I can get Linux to find my drive since it's probably not looking at the same place as Windows. IIRC, I could disable the SATA RAID BIOS once Linux had it's drivers installed for good.

There's also an option called clean Windows install, the longest part is installing WinXP and it's updates, but the rest is just minutes.(As long as you only reinstall games once you want to play them)

Your apps are all clean, and you just need to copy the config files/folders/save backups to your new profile(For games and e-mail app mostly). It's easy and the computer runs WAY faster after a fresh install.

That's what I do with a new system :
Defrag, set fixed SWAP file size to prevent it from being in multiple parts
Realtek Ethernet drivers
AVG Free
Remove Windows "Mess"enger : http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_messenger_remove.htm
notepad c:\windows\inf\sysoc.inf, use replace tool ",hide," to ",,"
go in Windows components remove what I don't want(HyperTerminal, Sound Recorder, Solitaire, etc.)
Long WU process, blacklisting WGA Notification (+ the upgrade and Windows Messenger) even if the license is legit.
Firefox and Thunderbird
ULi chipset drivers
ATi drivers and all the multimedia packages
Creative or kX drivers
Office 2K3, OpenOffice 2.0, WordPerfect 2000
IZArc, WinRAR 3.51 PCA offer
IrfanView with unofficial 3.98"t" on the IView forums
Winamp - http://otachan.com ASIO & mpg123 plugin
foobar2K with otachan's SSRC plugin
K-Lite mega Codec Pack (includes Real & Quicktime Alternative)

It's all taking less than a day.

You sent it to the D drive, I'll take a guess, but I do think that they are located where the D drive is. The Windows XP partitioning "utility" can tell you if there's space in front or behind your partition. A solution, merge C and D with Knoppix LiveCD, defrag with another system, if swap/hibernation file is still there, delete with Knoppix & NTFS write enabled, shrink your C partition.

WOW!!! That's a long and too frustrating process!!! A whole day is too much for me
So I really hope I'll managed eventually to directly restore the Image to Partition C: (if Acronis True Image 9.1 Workstation will recognize my SATA drive, of course :???:).

I still don't give up (...yet...). But of course, if anything else will fail, I guess I'll eventually do a "clean" Windows install, like you suggested...:???:

Anyway, thanks for your help and advice.

LOL these utilities take seconds to install. (Even Office)
MUCH easier with a slipstreamed SP2 CD, there's no Service Pack to install.

In less than 10 hours I had the time to install Windows 5 times, format ~50GB 3 times, install everything and have all users and config back running :
-First attempt : full format, install Windows, won't boot, old Windows menu entry still there (???)
-2nd attempt : fast format, install Windows, boots, but still 2 entries
-3rd attempt : delete partition, full format, won't boot
-4th attempt : install over the other, fast format, WORKS! Problem : I configured the IP address during the Windows setup, which ended up being the Firewire config, so I couldn't get the Realtek config to work since Windows would keep telling I already use the same IP.
-5th attempt : delete partition, full format, actually boots! This time, it worked.

Yeah, I know...It seems that I'm spending MORE than 1 day just to find a proper solution to the problem I'm presenting here...but like I said before, I might give up eventually and do the all process, right from the beginning, but then I'll know that everything I installed is 100% working properly and flawlessly...:mrgreen:
