I'm not real familiar with the operating temps of the older P4's, but does 50C under load seem a bit high? It has a stock heatsink on it. It seems like I remember hearing that they ran a bit hot, but I really don't know the range. Any info is appreciated.

the laptops at my school are celeron 1.3ghz and they run fine(are used almost every period)
the question would be is how good is the heatsink on there?
my amd sempy is a 1.6 and it stays under 35 easy with stock(but amd has better coolers, and run cooler anyways)
it also would depend on the manufacturer of the compy its in(unless you built it yourself)
i would say its a bit too high, make sure its dusted out i personaly run water over mine making sure not to touch the paste and i always get 1-2 degrees cooler until the dust builds back up(is in high quantity in our house)

also check to see if there even is thermal paste,
on mine and my dads mobo's the chipset heatsinks didnt have any kind of paste or tape it was just sitting on there

be careful taking that sink off! :O

I don't know if 50°C is high for that CPU, but I know that it's not high enough to do any harm.

It doesn't seem to be affecting it, but I just wanted to make sure. I've already reappllied the Ceramique once. It was running at around 53C under load, but I found one corner of the heatsink retention braket was broken. I replaced it and it dropped about 3C, but was still wondering if this temp was too high.

Oh and its a pc built by me from spare parts...I upgraded my mother in law from a PII 450 Compaq

One of my spare computers is a 1.6 P4 and if I remember correctly that's about the temps I was getting with the stock hsf. I'm going to be getting that system up and running again soon so I'll let you know what kind of temps I get.

I was under the impression that all P4 CPU's run hotter than their AMD equivalent? Regardless, 50C is fine and shouldn't do any damage to the CPU.

I think it is too, I never owned or opened a computer with a P4, so I really don't know.

Pretty much all the current chips before the Conroe were hot like frying pans.
