Hello guys, it's been a while since my last pymPreview, I know...
It takes a lot of time and a REAL good game for me to sit and actually write a preview...
But guess what, a game just like that is going to be released in 2007 and I felt I must research and extract some details for myself and for you guys...
Something to look forward to
If you read my previous pymPreviews (I am sure you have!!!) , you would probably know I am looking for fresh, original and innovative games.
It looks like that's what Codemasters' Overlord exactly is!
The game is set in a warped fantasy world where the unicorns are rabid, seven former heroes have become as corrupt as the world-threatening evil that they once fought to destroy.
You play a tough, roughened warrior that attracts lots of small and funny goblins to stand by your side.
Actually, you are sort of the heir of a powerful overlord that is believed to be dead for ages. When you emerge from his castle, all those goblins (minions) spot you and decide you are their next Overlord and pledge their lives to you.

That leaves you with one option, of course, take over the world!!!
Well, as they say, no rest for the wicked
While the game progresses, you will control different evil creatures that will perform any evil task you would assign to them.
Starting with getting rid of the current rulers, a bunch of heroes, that actually defeated the Overlord you are now replacing...
Those heroes, that once helped old ladies cross the road, indeed killed the previous Overlord but now, power and glory has diverted them and they chose to follow the dark side... MUHAHAHAH
ehhhmmmm, sorry for that
Becoming Evil
The game allows you to command the Overlord himself while commanding the imps that surround him as well.
Gameplay combines role playing action using your character while demands strategic approach when it comes to controlling your minions wisely.
The game is very open and allows you to treat the world's inhabitants as you wish.
Most of the folks you'll meet are not that innocent as you may think...
Greedy dwarves working all day in order to save some money for some beers at night.
Hobbits enslave simple peasants to do the work for them and the worst of all, rabid unicorns that will attack and kill all who stand in their ways.
A twisted world all the way!
As said, you may treat those as you wish, if you chose not to kill and destroy innocent people, you may finish the game with pretty low "Evil rank", but this is just not fun, don't you think?
The game will record your behaviour and the world will react accordingly.
For instance, when you'll redeem a village from the control of a wicked ruler, you will be treated with much respect and sympathy.
But when you'll start making the peasants' lives miserable, they'll fall to the ground with their faces down when you'll pass them by, fear your evil presence.
If you decide to be REALLY evil, they'll start tying their daughters to poles around the village for you to enjoy.
Who said there is being evil is not worthwhile ?

Goblins, gentlemen, goblins...
The goblins are doing some evil stuff, but don't get it wrong, though...
They are the heart of the game and they are so fun to watch.
There will be many situations where you will find it very difficult not to burst in laughter when seeing one or all of your goblins do some crazy stuff...
You will start with a few but with time, you will find yourself heavily surrounded with hordes of goblins.
If, for example, your goblins wasted a blacksmith, they will dance over his body for a while and then take all the weapons and armour to your castle, if you wish. Also, you will be able to collect souls of enemies in order to create more minions in different places of the world.
Besides the regular goblins, you will have goblins with special abilities such as fire resistance and the ability to poison the enemy.
There are not too many types of goblins but they supply a different point of view and some thinking material during the game instead of just flooding villages with as many goblins as you may find...
Conclusion
Well, Overlord looks like a very promising title that resembles Sacrifice in many ways, although Sacrifice was more strategic then RPG the idea is in the same direction ant that's great news!
The developer, Triumph Studios, has Age of Wonders to brag with and jusging by that, they have a lot to offer us as gamers ;)
They promise us dazzling graphics, that will make even high end video cards wish for some more cool air...
This game is going to test youe evilness...
As you progress you will have more and more destructive power to abuse the creatures in the world around you. Question is, how you will use it :)
The game will have a dynamic colorful single player campaign and some multiplayer modes for you to explor.
