*solved*

I've recently upgraded from my old GeForce 6600 to the 7900GT VIVO beast I'm running now, and ever since the change, i've been (seemingly) unable to use overlays. (Everything else runs without any trouble whatsoever.) I've tried everything from uninstalling and reinstalling ten (yep, 10) different versions of the nVidia drivers, to two -complete- reinstalls of Windows (I'm a Uni student -- too much time on my hands  ) but all to no avail. I'm unable to use my old card any more, so thats not an option for me. Does anyone have any suggestions on possible fixes, or am I going to have to return this card?

---*edit*---
After numerous tests and much time playing with settings, the good people in XFX tech support suggested I test changing the clock speed on my video card (both up and down, to see if it helped), in this case, I underclocked my card by 5Mhz on both the Core and Memory bus, and now have perfectly working overlays. INCLUDING when I returned the clock speeds to full 'factory' defaults. -- Thus, Overlay Problems No More!.

:-D :-D :-D

Okay, I suggest you run drivercleaner and remove every driver you find. Restart, install the latest DX9.0c from MS's website, probably restart again, then install the latest nVidia drivers, and see if it works now.

Sorry Grey, was worth a shot. :( XFX Support can probably help ya, but you'll need to wait until Monday as they don't work weekends, naturally. ;)

Do you know if the card had the same problems or not before you did the BIOS flash?

No problem, thanks for trying :) - And yes, the problem was there before the bios flash, so I'm sure thats not the issue.

Dear Grey, There are many reasons you may be having overlay problems. they range from incomplete codecs to corrupted installs. Here is a link to a PDf from nvidia that can help you resolve most configuration issues : http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/91.47/91.47_ForceWare_New_Control_Panel_Quick_Start.pdf . If this does not help please contact our support tema at www.xfxforce.com ==> Support ==> Help Desk. Please try to be as specific as you can about any error messages and exactly the behavior you are getting and they will be happy to assist you.

Just to add a little more detail to my issue, I have now had a chance to test an older Gigabyte 6600GT with the same updated drivers (nVidia 91.47) and overlays work perfectly. (Not my card, so I cannot simply use that instead.)

The most easily accessed test of this issue I have found, was using Winamp visualisations, and turning on the overlays and background colours... (in case thats any help)

On another note, I have found another nVidia user who's seemingly having the same issue, ( http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/index.php?t18298.html ) though I'm unsure of any further details, or even if they managed to fix the issue.

hmm, well... that seems like all I can think up to be helpfull right now. :)

- Grey.
