View Full Version : Low FPS with 6800GT AGP

Hello,
I was wondering if there are some general steps in troubleshooting why I am having low FPS. Any thing out there that I can test with or find out where my bottle-neck is. Here are my specs:
P4 3.0 GHz
XFX 6800GT 256mb with dual DVI
2 GIG of Ram PC3200 (Kingston Hyperx) 4 sticks of 512s
Creative Audigy2 Platinum
When I'm playing WoW for instance, I'm averaging 16-20 FPS. When I'm in a PVP fight, it drops down to about 4-6 FPS... I've tried disabling my mods, turning down all the visual effect also. That only gave me a slight improvement... Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks!
Edit: Admins, please move this thread if it doesn't belong... I apologize if it doesn't.

I have version 9.1.4.7 nvidia drivers installed. I just ran a 3dMark test and the CPU test seems to have failed horribly. If I can figure out how to open the test file, I'd copy and paste my results...
Speaking of junk running in the background, 3dMark was able to capture this info for me:

3DMark03.exe 1608 27 MB
alg.exe 856 5 MB

Is it normal to have so many svchost.exe running? Can anyone who know much about processes and let me know if anything seems odd?

Here's a good site to check on running processes and see if they're worth keeping running or not.

It looks like you have picked up some maleware. I suggest you run some anti-spyware apps and reinstall your anti-vrius, then run that too. It is normal to see that many svchost proccesses running, MS uses them for alot of junk. The three processes "raze*" shouldn't be there, and since they are hidden processes it's a safe bet they are your problem.
If you need some apps to use, google Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, and also give TrendMicro's Housecall a try.

Dear Haodiesel, We are currently recommending the 84.21 drivers for this card. Also whenever uninstalling and reinstalling drivers please use a driver cleaner. You can get a trial version from www.drivercleaner.net. I like to use the professional one as this is a freeware trial version and is quite effective. It is most effective in safe mode. As for the CPu tests in 3D Mark programs. Please understand that this is your CPU doing all the processing and it is only using your system RAM so many people experience 1 FPS or lower in this catagory. I think many of the people here are on the right track in thinking that you may have gotten some form or malware or virus and a complet system scan should be run. Also please check your PSU just to make sure that it is functioning properly and try to connect the auxillary power to the video card on a different dongle than the harddrive or any other high demand device.

Btw, I found out what the problem was. DUST BUNNIES! I cleaned out my HSF and is running at high 50's to 60's when standing around. 30's while fighting. I just ordered an aftermarket heatsink from NewEgg. As for...

The "raze" process are from my Razer Diamondback mouse drivers. I recognize alot of processes in there. The only questionable ones are the multiple svchost ones (which sometimes are spoofed by viruses). None-the-less, I'll get some anti-spyware and scan through my system. Maybe I can get some extra performance from this. I'll re-install the 84.21 drivers as well.
Thanks for your advices everyone.

I'll have to make a note to ask, dust seems to be the usual culprit as of late. ;)

I googled a few of those processes up, and what I found suggested some of them were also spoofed or used by malware. So without being able to check the physical location of the running file, I'd still definitely suggest you run some anti-spyware scans anyway... ;) Glad ya got it working.

Dear Haodiesel,
Please do not change the cooling solution on the video card as this will void your Double Lifetime Warranty. The cooling solution on the card is sufficient to maintain the video card but as you discovered any fan or vent in your system requires regular cleaning for proper cooling.

Oh the HSF I was talking about was my CPU HSF. Not the one on my video card. Btw, I slapped on a Cooler Master Vortext Tx (not the best choice but one of the few that can fit into a Antec Super Lanboy). Its not super cool but it keeps my CPU in the low 50's celcius while playing WoW (60+ using stock HSF).
