I'm currently running an 800mhz bus P4 3ghz. www.geeks.com (http://www.geeks.com) has 3.4ghz p4's going for $119. Should I grab one or do you think I'd be wasting my money? I plan to do a major upgrade eventually but since it basically involves building an entirely new computer I keep putting it off.

If I get one I don't have a motherboard to put my old one in so I could either sell it for a few bucks to make the upgrade even more appealing or I could buy an inexpensive motherboard that would support my old CPU and upgrade one of the other systems around the house. Probably my wifes computer since she's running an AthlonXP 2400+.

Opinions?

Waste of money. The P4 series is so far back in performance compared to everything else, there would be not point to it. I have a D930 you can have for $160 shipped, and also have motherboards. PM me if you are interested.

Compare CPU's here: http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html

I agree... just look at what $119 will get you. Any single core AM2 or 939 socket processor, or even a dual-core Pentium D 805, all brand new. For the money spent upgrading your old rig, you could get much better performance starting from scratch with new stuff. It's sad, but just the way it is. :( And ya can at least sell off whatever you had laying around you were originally going to use... I've been meaning to do the same myself.

Agree with the guys above. It really isn't worth the money, even if you sold your old cpu for a little.
