SATA may replace ATAPI as mainstream for DVD burners in 2007 (http://www.digitimes.com/systems/a20061003A7035.html)

Although advanced technology attachment packet interface (ATAPI) is the mainstream interface standard for optical disc drives (ODDs) currently, serial ATA (SATA) stands a chance of replacing the former in the second half of 2007, according to sources in Taiwan's ODD manufacturing industry.

SATA has been adopted for several DVD-burner models, such as the Sony AW-Q160S, Asustek DRW-1814BLT and DVD-E616A3T, the sources indicated. Samsung, Pioneer and the Taiwan-based Lite-On IT and BenQ will launch SATA DVD burners this quarter, the sources noted.

There are no technological barriers to OEM makers of DVD burners migrating from ATAPI to SATA, but popular adoption of the latter standard actually hinges on clients, the sources pointed out.

About time they start doing so. The cable routing will be much nicer, although I must admit it doesn't seem all that much of a problem for mid-full tower cases. Anything smaller and especially SFF cases are sure to benefit from this though. Just one thing I would like to see is sticking with the choice of using molex connectors if possible as to keep the SATA connections strictly for HDs.

Great! Let's just hope that mobos don't start missing SATA plugs!

In fact, it was possible to use some plug-in IDE to SATA converters, but they were ugly and not always working with CDROMs.

Good thing too since IDE can only go sar far and DVD burners get faster every now and then.
