If you want pre-built POS then try anyone of of these Canadian based etailers:

Futureshop (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/class.asp?logon=&langid=EN&catid=1003)

BestBuy (http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/dept.asp?logon=&langid=EN&catid=20213).

NCIX (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?minorcatid=1058)

Can Computers (http://www.cancomputer.com/pc/index.php?majorcatid=31)

Canada Computers (http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=010911&cid=170.45)

Tiger Direct (http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/Category/category_tlcNEW.asp?CatId=6)

I can't recommend any pre-built PCs I since I like to build my own PC.

Thats a bummer, I remember last Xmas they had laptops for around $300.. There were fist fights when they ran out...

If you need cheap they are hard to beat.

I'd suggest to get the computer built by the store with the parts you decide. Sometimes you get more for your money.

...um, didn't you previously state that your dad was going to buy you a brand new, top-of-the-line computer? Did those plans fall through? :?

NO DELL NO DELL:evil:
go with HP if your looking for brand name...
also ive gotten a few good deals off tiger direct, there would be a good palce to look

if you shop right you can get a prebuilt compy and remove the junk that you waste $ for to find a not-so-bad compy after all:roll:

PS. dells suck :P
my toshiba tecra 8000 outruns the $500 notebooks at school:mrgreen:

When they're in promotion, they can be a better deal than customs computers. (The only thing is that sometimes you can't upgrade or remove parts to keep the rebate)

pretty damned cheap!!!! I was also thinking of the HP SFF but the processor in it is CRAP- i will go to futureshop this weekend and perhaps see one there for a good deal- while picking up my new cyborg evo 3d joystick :)

Why are u getting a Dell XPS??? Go for alienware if ur gonne get a games machine.. or maybe a voodoo.. not dell uuugghhh...!!!

werty316

Better yet build your own machine ;)

I strongly recommend AGAINST a Dell... don't fall for the pretty pictures/commercials! If you get a Dell, pretty much anything you want to do/add/upgrade down the road WILL be through Dell and only Dell... propriartary parts and whatnot. You have been warned!

Kougar
10-13-2006, 07:00 AM
What is proprietary about Dell?!? I've mucked about in a friend's Dell, even the powersupply plug uses the general computing ATX plugs now.

I'd say skip Alienware, at least a Dell is a better price value.

werty316

With a custom PC upgrading is easier and you know what parts you are buying.

He stated building his own rig was not an option for him.

You could get a custom one built at your local store also.

Hey, I just remembered, Costco has some computers.

i want an xps, and my dad doesnt let me buy expenisve parts he thinks i might break them :) oh and i found my hp replacement- its specs and cost are here- for $999.99 I get AMD X2 5000+, 2GB Memory, 320GB hdd LightScribe DVD burner and integrated graphics with open pci-e-hp

not bad either that or this- for $799.99 get pentium D 820- 1GB memory 250 gig HDD lightscribe dvd burner and integrated gfx with open pci-e-compaq

DragonMaster
10-13-2006, 10:50 PM
Not bad, you'll need to get a real GPU to play games tho. Maybe wait for vista to get a DX10 card.

werty316
10-14-2006, 01:17 AM
I would also say wait next till the mid range/low end G80(Nov) and R600(Feb) are out.

Its never too late to start build at a young age ;)

Kougar
10-14-2006, 03:41 AM
You would be getting ripped off with a Pentium D 820. Last I saw market prices on those were ~$130ish, and it'll get blown away by anything AMD offers.

darkorb
10-14-2006, 03:51 AM
better to get the 5000+

DragonMaster
10-14-2006, 03:54 AM
Or a Core 2 Duo.

For the price of a X2 5000+ an E6300, E6400, or E6600 would be better and the E6600 is priced around the same as the X2 5000+ at some Canadian based etailers.

X2 5000+ - $370CAD (http://www.pccanada.com/viewitem.asp?id=4534)
E6300 - $215CAD (http://www.pccanada.com/viewitem.asp?id=4776)
E6400 - $265CAD (http://www.pccanada.com/viewitem.asp?id=4777)
E6600 - $370CAD (http://www.pccanada.com/viewitem.asp?id=4778)

As of this post NCIX doesn't have the X2 5000+ but PC Canada has cheaper prices.

darkorb
10-14-2006, 04:53 AM
based on performance, is it 6600, 6400, 5000, 6300?

werty316
10-14-2006, 04:57 AM
Either would be a good choice since an OC'd Conroe owns.

Take a look at some benches here:
http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/08/02/thg_tuning_test/page6.html#games
http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/07/14/core2_duo_knocks_out_athlon_64/page12.html#games

I go by the rule of buy a cheap or the cheapest chip and OC the heck out of it.

Just go here for benchmark comparisons: http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html

darkorb

stock i meant

werty316
10-14-2006, 05:04 AM
Since both the X2 5000+ and E6600 are the same price at PC Canada the E6600.

Why care aobut stock settings when you can OC a E6400 to great speeds? Unless of course you don't OC which is a shame since you won't see the full potential of a E6400.

The E6400 performs about than the X2 5000+ in games when both are at stock speeds. The E6400 is the better choice for its OC'ing performance. Also the Conroe is newer/better tech.

this one guy at my school (thinks hes good with comps) just bought a new rig with a x2 3800+, 1gb ram and a 6800xt :S lets call this guy loser

my other friend has a 6400, x1800xl, and also 1gb ram, the loser was saying that his cpu is better because for gaming amd utilizes both of the cores better than intel, because they are just 2 single cores slapped together.

oh if only i was there, ig uess that would be the case with x2 and pd, but c2d are brand new architecture? and they pwn!

werty316
10-14-2006, 05:18 AM
Yeah you can't really compare current gen AMD to Intel's Core2Duo since the Core2Duo is newer technology hence it is faster/better. Everyone is on teh Core2Duo band wagon.

I now how you feel and we AMD users have a wait for anything good when AM2+ is out.

Anyhow the thread is going off topic.

Let's just say he's in the K6-2 days when telling AMD is better for games... (3DNow!)

It's like telling that Mac is better for graphics and movie making, that Sony is reliable, that you can be proud of working at McDonalds, that PC=Windows, that Norton AV is good, etc. Wake up, we're in 2006, all this is a thing of the past.

i still want to be amd loyal!! but its hard..
Just wait next year, they should come up with something good.

I'm 100% sure that you don't need a new computer. If you can play Half-Life 2, Company of Heroes, etc. on an Athlon XP 2000 Palomino(133FSB) and a GF4 Ti4200, your Athlon 64 IS still good and you can wait for the next AMDs.

Actually, athlon 64's are better than pentiums for gaming as well... :)

DragonMaster

But you can play games on both w/o too much difference

Anyways, I stick with AMD.

just out of boredom i compared the most expensive dell xps box you could get off the site....then i took the list of parts and went to newegg....$6,000 down to $4,000 (including everything, speakers, software, etc.,) is preatty good
the newegg box i designed was quad sli too
no matter how hard i tried i couldnt spend but $5,634 on the newegg box, but then i had more harddrives than could fit in....

dont waste your $ on dell photo viewer....
