If you can figure out what this is you'll have a good idea where I'm going with my mod. Good luck super sleuths! (Shouldn't be too hard, I didn't hide any of the info from the part in this picture)

to me it looks like hes goign to have his own game controller and have it wired to that and thats a passthrough for the keyboard
so its like using a keyboard, only more suited for gaming
LED lights for when you hit a key?
WPM counter?
ninja shuriken?
but im a lil crazy:roll:

I'm purposely being very vague with these pictures. I'll start getting more specific when I get closer to finishing up, hopefully this weekend.

This is an old style four-wayy contact switch, usually used for electrical swictching, as it is insulated.
Of course, my info only means XJ's clues will just get tougher.

This PCB connects to the PS/2 ports of your computer and you connect the arcade controller buttons to the PCB terminals. It looks like he's building an arcade cabinet, or maybe just a controller. Since he told it's a mod, it's more likely he's putting his computer in a DIY arcade cabinet and run MAME on it.
A lot of people are doing this

Sorry to say so, but that's very unlikely. The contest is about modding an antec case. It's not getting a free case from antec and building another one from scrap.

Yup, that's the strange thing... Unless it's for something else than the contest???
Why would he put a joystick and buttons on a computer case? Will he turn it in a computer/controller? Maybe the joystick is going to be used as a mouse... :???:
All we know is that he got arcade stuff...

Someone figured it out, kind of...
Why would I get a fancy, sturdy case just to stick it inside a mame cabinet when I already have a nice mame cabinet I built.
http://www.x-j-nine.com/mamepic.jpg
Why not turn the case into a mame cabinet itself... There's something to be said for portability.
Good job on figuring out the pics I posted, I knew they would be tough to figure out.

HAH, I knew it, it's an arcade cabinet!
Nice one BTW!

Hey, why not a mini-version of your cabinet? (You'd need smaller buttons tho)

omg nice idea XJ(i was right about the controller!)
how much it costing? O_o
oh, and im not in the antec contest anymore >_<
they shipped to my SN and i guess when scott asked for my real name, they already shipped it.. so i got a lil card in the mail saying that i should go to this one place a half an hour away and provide photo ID for me to pick up the case since there is no one at my house living by my SN
well i had like 3 days to pick it up or they would send it back, and since i have not yet a car, or a licsense...i couldnt get it >_______< grr
;-; i had such a kewl garage door idea...and fog machines! :D
best of luck to the rest of yous
and nice modding XJ :D

Student cards are OK. Anything official with your name on it works.
how much it costing? O_o
I guess that the cabinet isn't too bad, wood ins't too expensive, the most expensive is the hardware probably.
XJnine
10-15-2006, 02:39 AM
That cabinet is an old one I built a long time ago. The mod for the case mod competition is a completely different project.
The big cabinet you see the pic of cost a pretty penny. It uses a 27" TV and since it is a 4 player cab with a trackball and a spinner I spent quite a bit on the controller setup. I had the computer already but I needed lots of other stuff. Probably a $1000 investment.

Some of the older members around here can appreciate how cool that machine would have been in the arcade when we were kids. One machine that had every game in the arcade in it. Very cool.
DragonMaster
10-15-2006, 10:45 PM
Well, I'm sure that most of us younger people already played one of them at least once, these machines are quite easy to find, it's just that since we have computers and video game consoles, we pass more time in our homes playing than feeding an arcade cabinet with money. I still prefer a real arcade cabinet to a computer, if it's not about having enough coins to put in it...
I always wanted to build one of these things, but there's no place where I could put it, so I stick with smaller consoles.
XJnine
10-15-2006, 10:59 PM
Thx for the compliments guys.
I thought about putting a coin door in the big cabinet when I built it but I didn't want to have to deal with the kids losing the tokens whenever they were playing games on it. What would probably end up happening is that I would probably leave the door open so you could just click the coin lever instead of putting a coin in. A coin door would be fun but I think it would be too much of a hassle. I just went with a button to add as many credits as you want.

I remember Pong, than Pacman, than Spyhunter, than Tron. After those stupid games went to .50 cents than $1.00.
Its hard for me to imagine a console that has them ALL plus the new games and 10 times better Graphics and Sound and is FREE!!!!!
yep I would say big thumbs up to you XJ

Here we never have anything under $1, but sometimes you get 2 credits for $1. Some games cost $2 tho...

You know you can download full MAME, Genesis, NES, etc. ROM sets? They say that they're legal because companies don't make anymore money out of them. (That's the answer they got from some companies actually)

Yeah, I remember the old days... A quarter a game and you could play for hours, and then it started going up. I think the last time I played in an arcade, it was 2,50$ a game. After a while the kids started spending more money on drugs in the arcades than on actual games.
The last arcade in my city closed last year. Strangely enough downtown's been much more quiet too... coincidence?
=CDU=Above
10-16-2006, 08:37 AM
Yep, all games were a quarter...so were all candy bars...and smokes were 75 cents. I think the pool tables were the 50 cents though. Oh and there was that giant pinball machine named Hercules that used an actual que ball. That was 50 cents too.
It's nostalgic thoughts like these that have contributed to the success of places like Dave and Buster's. An arcade for the now adults that grew up in the arcades.
My games were Karate Champ, Gun Smoke, and Spy Hunter. Sunk a bunch of money into those three.
