Hey guys, I was just wondering, if you buy a Sli certified power supply but have to graphics cards at the moment, are you straining the 12 volt rails?

If you have a SLI Certified PS its made to run 2 Video cards. If you are using only 1 video card the PS should direct power where its needed automaticaly.
It matters what cards ur using, it would be a strain if ur using two 7950GX2s or 1900XT cards on a 550watt or less PS. I use 2 7600GS/GT cards with a 400 watt PS.
Unless its a Cheap No-Name PS than its anybodys guess..

I got the x1800xl on an OCZ 600watt, Im worried because my 12 volt is at 12.67
PS. thats for the quick reply

12.67V is fine. Now if you said 14V or 10V than I would worry...
I think within 5% is nominal (11.4 to 12.6)
also it matters the Volt meter ur using and the power in the wall socket and Bla Bla Bla..
just enjoy it (unless you see smoke, just kidding)

Think of it this way; its better to be overvolted than undervolted as long as it isn't huge and 12.67V isn't bad. My 12V rail runs at 12.26V so you should be fine as long as your computer doesn't encounter any instability.

why would it get so high though? he has more than enough power to the components

It is probably high to due the fact that software never read the exact values of the voltages rails and the 12V rail is not under any loads.

could be whatever he is checking the voltage with is a little off, the wall socket may be a little high or the PS may be a little off.

all in all, its ok though right?

Yep:grin:
as long as when he pushes the start button and it starts and there is no smoke or fire, its all good:lol:

thanks for the info guys, just one other question, if you plug in your computer into a socket(wall outlet) after it was unplugged for a few hours, do you have to wait like 30 seconds to build up a charge in the PSU before you can turn the computer on?

I never have. Where did you hear that from?

Well its kinda wierd, but at my friends house when i plugged my comp in and pressed the button it didnt turn on right away, it was like "lag"-time. if that makes sence:confused:  :(

I wouldnt worry about it unless it keeps happening.
(than I would check the on/off switch first)

There is not lag time as it takes nano or was it micro seconds,... whichever is smaller, for the capacitors to charge in a regulated PSU.

plus, your friends PSU might be a POS:lol:
ive learned my lesson about cheapo PSU's
heavy=good
i think i can recall on this lag-time happening to me once...meh im imagining things
mabey its just his mobo delaying to POST:confused:
