Hi everyone,

I thought i'd open a new post on this topic, but my problem is very similar to one posted previously by another member.
Alot of the times when i leave a 3dgame ie, BF2,NFS Most wanted, HL2,CSS etc. It seems i cant click on anything on my desktop.
At first glance it seems this way, but in actual fact it just takes ages 1-20mins to get my desktop back functioning properly again.(most times i just reboot as it takes way too long)
For example if i have a msn conversation from someone that i attend to after playing i go to click on it and nothing happens, i click on a desktop icon ...again nothing happens, i click on the start button nothing happens. If i click on a program in my quicklaunch bar nothing happens.
But if i move my mouse up after hitting the start button to say where windows update link is and click it the hour glass spins momentarily and whilst madly thrashing my mouse about the screen it slowly uncovers the windows update page in pieces.
If i move my mouse to where the "x" for close this window is and close it all my problems are gone ,everything on my desktop works as it should.
This is very frustrating as i have formatted a few times and reinstalled windows xp pro sp2 all updates, directx patches nvidia 91.47whql drivers etc.
Everything is fine untill i install games and when i exit im done for preying my desktop will come back without a reboot(hitting the reset button)

My system specs are as follows
AMD 3700+ Skt 754
Asus K8N4-E Deluxe
Corsair Twinx2048-Cas2Pro(2x1GB)
XFX 7900GT XXX edition
Antec TruPower2 480watt PSU
Western Digital 160GB IDE HDD
Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS

I have no problems playing any games whatsoever(well occasionally i get a freeze/sound stutter)its only a problem when i leave a game. That my desktop is a fight to the death to get back working.

I have also opened up a support Ticket# 68840 with XFX Technical Support

Any assistance/advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Hi again,

Sorry i should have also included this in my above post.
Occasionally when playing games i get a stutter/freeze problem with the sound looping this can last for a good 10-20seconds sometimes and even results in my computer rebooting itself occasionally too.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice

I had the same problem with my 7800 GT XXX but only while playing Call of Duty 2.

I did what the Activision support site recommended.

http://activision.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/activision.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php?p_sid=tgAlEbli&p_lva=&p_li=&p_accessibility=0&p_page=1&p_cv=&p_pv=2.445&p_prods=1%2C445&p_cats=&p_hidden_prods=&prod_lvl1=1&prod_lvl2=445&p_search_text=&p_new_search=1&p_search_type=answers.search_nl&p_sort_by=dflt

Their advice was to:

1) Click the Start button > Settings > Control Panel.
2) Double-click the Sounds and Audio Devices icon.
3) Click the Volume tab.
4) Under Speaker settings, click the Advanced button.
5) Click the Performance tab.
6) Reduce the Hardware acceleration to Basic, the 2nd notch from the left.
7) Click Apply and then OK 2 times. Run the game now. Don't forget to turn the acceleration back up to restore the high-end features for your sound card when using other applications.

After I finished the singleplayer game, I uninstalled the game and I never had another problem. Three months later, I upgraded my video card. I never did flash my bios or uninstall any drivers to fix my problem.

There was some thinking at the time that COD2 didn't like the overclocked card, so some guys were underclocking the card and reporting success.

Good luck. I hope it all works out.

Hi Null,

Thanks for some input.I'm gathering by your post your problem was a game freezing/sound stutter problem?
Did your 7800GT XXX exibit any problems when leaving games back to your desktop at all also?
The games freezing/sound looping/stutter problem doesnt occur much, really ive only noticed it playing Counter-Strike Source, and BF2.
But any game Trackmania nations,Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07,CSS,HL2,CIV4,BF2 etc can at any time give me major problems when exiting.
I can run 3dmark06 no problems at all , no texture thrashing,or problems as such that make me think i have a card with the faulty memory, but it gets very frustrating playing games thinking that when i exit back to desktop im going to have to fight to get the desktop to respond normally.
Once again thanks for your input, hopefully i can get some more advice/help.

Thanks

Roy

My problem was mostly freezing/sound stuttering. But, it would also give me trouble from time to time when I exited and tried to go back to the desktop.

My card never gave me any trouble when running 3dmark06.

Also note that I had the X-Fi Xtreme Music in my system at that time.

This usually happens when your RAM is full and the pagefile is in use, if memory serves me correctly. Meaning low onboard RAM. But since you are showing 2GB, probably not your problem. Have you run a diagnostic on you RAM?

Dear Mdma,
Here is a nice utility that will test the memory on the video card. RTHDRIBL is a high dynamic lighting test utility we use to push the memory on the card. http://www.daionet.gr.jp/~masa/rthdribl/ . Please open up multiple windows of this utility until you get an out of memory error which will close the last window you opened. At this point all of the RAM on the card is being utilized and you can spread the windows out to look for any errors. If the memory has a fault it will be easily recognizable. Also please contact our support team at www.xfxforce.com ==> support ==> Help Desk. Register yourself and the card and then start a support ticket. Please be as specific as possible about any and all tests you have done so the techs will nto go over teh same ground again. Also you can call us at 800-880-3225 if you are in North America.

Hi xfxsupport,

Thank you for replying to my post.I will run that application tonight for a while and see how it goes and get back to you with the results i get.
I also have registered my card on the xfx support site when i purchased it, and have opened a support ticket there also with basically the same information as i have entered here. The support ticket number is #68840 created the 10/26/2006 for your information if that helps also, at this stage it still shows "with technician" so im waiting for a response there.

Thanks and ill let you know how i go.

Roy
