I just read through your review, and it looks pretty good. Well done!

It made me want to play, mostly because I have been to busy to play this game since we all tried our gathering over a week ago.

CONRATULATIONS pym on your first review and of course, on becoming an official staff member!

I just finished reading your review and really enjoyed reading it.

I'm not a huge fan of RTS games, but honestly, after reading the review, I might think again about purchasing this game and give it a try, as the graphics look amazing (I don't remember I ever/recently saw RTS game with such high-quality and detailed graphics!!! )

So, CONGRATS again and keep up the good work.
It will be great to read more reviews fo yours...oh...BTW...do you have ideas already for your next review? :???:

Great review Pym! I just got the game yesterday and got to play with it for a bit... I can't believe how similar it is to Star Trek Armada II, although obviously the graphics are more advanced with CoH, and it has more depth to the gameplay!

One thing I found the game to be instantly lacking are some basic automatic commands that can be given to the AI though, to let them act independently so you can focus elsewhere on the playing field! Search and Destroy, Scouting, and especially the ability to have units "guard" objects or other units. Besides the obvious protection, setting them to guard has them follow that unit around, so immediately it's one less thing to worry about while shuffling units across a busy map. I find myself needing this option with groups of anti-tank artillery peices and the .50mm equiped half-tracks that prefer to have cover them... ;) Even so I'd definitely say it's a few steps above ST Armada II...

About RTS making a long way, well, hell yeah!
The RTS genre has progressed in huge steps since the day it was born.
You can see that in all aspects including graphics, sound, gameplay and user interface.
Go ahead and buy your copy, I promise you won't be disappointed.

Picked up a copy of it and Civ 4 at Best Buy for $20 each. I really got them for myself, but obviously will put them in my sons stocking for Christmas. He has been playing RTS since he was about 4 and has gotten pretty good at them. He and I play Empire Earth 2 quite often and he likes Empire at War and Rise fo Nations, so this will give him something else to mess around with.

I've bought him more ram for his computer and now I'm trying to decide on a cheap graphics card for him. I don't think the 4400 will get it for this game, and he isn't getting my 6600.

If he or I don't play terrible in this game perhaps we will try to jump in and get our ass kicked by one of y'all.

Whats the best graphics card for about $100 bucks?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Page=2&Category=38&Nty=1&N=2010380048+1069609639+1305520548&Submit=ENE&Subcategory=48

If there is one at another site that would be better let me know if you could.

I'm looking at the
XFX PVT73DUAL3 GeForce 7300GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR2 AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail
and the
XFX PVT42KUDE3 GeForce 6800XT 256MB GDDR3 AGP 8X Video Card - Retail

I know the first one has the biggest number, but is it really better? Looks like the 6800XT is the better card for gaming? Any other suggestions? Would any of these better than the EVGA 6600GT I currently have on my system?

Forgive me for taking this thread off topic also, but this review is part of what has got me pumped up on this and wanting to upgrade my sons computer.

I say, if you can afford a little bit of extra money, you should go for the 7600GS Video Card. You can find it for $123.99 or even for $109.99 ("Open Box"):

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Order=PRICE&SrchInDesc=7600GS&Page=1&Category=38&Nty=1&N=2010380048+1069609639+1305520548&Submit=ENE&Subcategory=48

But, if you can't afford it, I would say, go for the 7300GT, as it has almost the same performance than the 6800XT, but has more advanced technology...but if we're talking about performance only, I think that the 6800XT is a bit better than the 7300GT, tough I might be wrong...

I hope this helps...GOOD LUCK! :thumleft:

I have Geforce 6800GS and the game works good for me...
It's a good video card for my opinion and it's not expensive, of course you can get much better than that, but it depends on your budget...

Kougar

Yeah, I wouldn't suggest the 6800XT or 7300GT at all. Money would be better spent saving up for something bigger...

THG doesn't have the 6800XT on their charts, but they peg the 7300GT to only give ~5FPS more at most over a 6600GT. It's not worth the upgrade... if ya had PCIe, there are three 7600GT cards on Newegg going for $99 through $104 right now.

Off the top of my head the 6800XT was a 6800GT with some of the hardware missing, so it'd be somewhere around a vanilla 6800. I'd seen it reviewed a few places though...

zachig

Yeah...that's what I said, if you can afford the extra bucks, grab yourself a decent 7600GT, as you can get it for around $99 at NewEgg...

Oh...and I think we went a bit :offtopic: . So...maybe you should open a separate thread for this, s_gibson...and, GOOD LUCK on your purchase...;-)
