I'm trying to get video overlay working, so I can use my ATI TV tuner. To try and fix the problem I removed the TV tuner (ATI drivers are really bad so I didn't want them screwing anything up) and reinstalled windows. On the new install of windows with only the motherboard drivers and video card drivers installed I open up the Nvidia control panel and it says "Overlay is disabled, no controls available." XFX support wasn't very helpfull, so I decided to post here. Does anyone know how to get video overlay enabled.

To clarify, you are using a nVidia graphics card with an ATI TV Tuner card in your system? If so, after installing the latest nVidia drivers you'd still need to install ATI's specific Tuner card drivers... You can go here http://ati.de/support/driver.html (http://ati.de/support/driver.html), select your OS, then be sure to select "TV Tuner". Install those, and then pray that they will work together ;)

Yeah I assumed it would be a problem with ATI software, but I pulled the card from the system and video overlay doesn't work when I only have the motherboard drivers and the video card drivers installed.

That is unusual to have it tell you that Video Overlay is disabled even after you uninstalled the ATI TV Tuner Card. Can you go to the Nvidia control panel and get a screen shot and send it to me please.

Actually, I have recently had this exact issue. I did not originally have any problems, but then it suddenly popped up, and when trying to google for some help, I found this thread. Eventually, I figured it out on my own.

I run a BFG 7800 GS OC, and I was experiencing weird errors, including the control panel issue shown above. I think you'll find that viewing Quicktime movies in your browser will exhibit odd behavior as well. (To test, I used a site I frequent which allows me to quickly test quicktime videos: zefrank.com/theshow)

I was noticing that sometimes, the color was slightly off (appeared to be a color correction issue (the gray on the beginning of the ZeFrank videos was appearing tan in color)), or the video refused to play properly and caused my machine to respond very VERY slowly while the video window was active and on screen. It seemed as if the latter occurance only happened once I had visited the control panel in the current session.

After playing with the hardware accelleration settings (display properties->settings->advanced->troubleshoot), I found that decreasing the acceleration three notches to the point where it disables directx functionality fixed the problem. Realizing this, I came to the conclusion that the drivers were causing some sort of conflict with directx, as once I did this temporary fix, all my videos and the nvidia control panel returned to normal.

The reason, I found, was that I was using the beta 93.81 Forceware drivers for XP 32bit. Once I rolled back to the official 93.71's, I was able to turn hardware acceleration all the way back up, and the problem was remedied.

It looks like this is your issue as well, as the control panel for .81 looks like yours and mine used to. .71 is slightly different.

I hope this helps. :)

edit: UPDATE -- Okay, that's weird. Now it sometimes shows the "overlay is disabled" message, but if I click on the little monitor icon on that screen, it works as it should. ??? I wonder if it's something I have running. At any rate, the .71 drivers still no longer exhibit any problems.

Didn't work but thanks for the suggestion.

Damn. Oh well.. Also I realized some time after posting that the versions have the same gui, but it looked different only because my window size had changed. Oops. Silly me. :P

So clicking on the monitor icon doesn't bring it back? Is this the only issue you're seeing, or are there other problems as well?

Nvidia has not gotten back with us with a solid answer, so in the interest of customer service ,I would like to have you send that video card in for replacement (plus it will give us a chance to run some tests on it). I will team with the support staff to let them know you may be responding to your ticket requesting an RMA. Keep me posted.

Is this the normal way for faulty products? Bring them in so you can test them? I must say if it is thats pretty good for the customers considering what you find is wrong on that one card gets fixed with bios updates etc...

A big yourock: for XFX. Now to sit back and enjoy my XFX 7950GT in silence :ahhhhh:

I tested my computer with a EVGA e-Geforce 7950 GT KO and video overlay works fine.

Thank you for getting the RMA, my 4th, any chance I can get you to do the RMA with cross shipping so I'm not out a video card for a month.

No this isn't the normal case. Last time my XFX video card die support basically told me to test it myself. See below.

[CURTIS - 04/23/2006] Dear Spencer, Thsi is very unusuall and I suspect that ther may be a conflict issue on your mainboard. the fact that two cards are behaving tghe exect same way and both being being bad is not very likely. Can you please test this card in another system for fault, or have your mainboard tested for proper configuration and function. Curtis

Have you already started a support ticket? If so let me know the number and I will get the ball rolling for you. I can try to help you get a cross shipment as well.

The support ticket is 71070 and CURTIS just claimed that XFX doesn't do cross shipping but I know that to be in error because RMA #3 was cross shipped.

Curtis is correct in that normally we do not offer cross shipments, but sometimes I am able to arrange it for fellow Bjorn3d forum members. I have teamed with the support staff and they should be contacting you.
