In an effort to combat all the SPAM that we have been experiencing lately we have implemented something new. Each new member with less than a few posts (No, we're not going to reveal the exact number, but it's not many) will have their posts placed in a moderation que. Their posts will be examined by an Administrator on a routine basis and if the post contains no SPAM it will be released to the thread it was intended.
In addition to this members who fit in this category will not be able to upoad: Pictures, Attachments, or other items condusive to SPAM.
We ask all new members and older mebers that only have 1 or 2 posts to bear with this practice as it should virtually eliminate any SPAM getting through to the forums. We want our member to enjoy this forum, but not at the expense of the horrific amount of SPAM we have experienced in the last 60 days...The probationary period is very short, but it should be adequate to help eliminate the SPAM getting through to the forums. Most of you will never notice the controls are even in effect. Thanks for your patience and understanding in this matter!

Thank you, how did you get that to work? My clan is having problems with some autospam in our forums. Though we had it sealed up, but every now and then it creeps back in. Seems to have something to do with the title of the thread.

HAH.
Now thats the only way to fight spam.
You have to moderate it, but at least you will rid the forums of this ridiculous practice of "enlarge your penis" posting.
Thanks a lot bjorn3d this is the most effective way unless you have spammers that have a lot of time to lose to post a bunch of things like nothing is going on then they spam then they get banned.
Anyways good job bjorn you guys know how to run things :)

This sounds like a great way to combat the recent influx of spammers to the board ;) :)
Great idea, this will definitely hold the spammers back and make the forums clean!
Way to go.

This is a very good idea. I really hope this way you'll manage the fight those spammers and make the forums clean of spam!
We really had too many spam in the last 60 days, which was very annoying!!! :frown:
So...WELL DONE, Miles and all the rest!!! GOOD LUCK in fighting those spammers!!! ;-)

This seems to be a widespread problem. We've temporarily closed forum registrations at 3dgpu because of the spam problems we've been having. What you guys are doing looks like a good idea. I hope it works.

I don't seem to have this problem, at least not anymore, and even guests can post. :p Anyway, this seems like a good idea.
P.S. This is a standard feature in many bbs, like vBulliten and MyBullitenBoard (the on I use, which is vB like, and free :w00t: )

I guess so, this way spammers can't put spam links in their signature.

Anyways, welcome to you!

Moderating posts of new , unknown members is a great idea, however...
When can I update my sig, avatar, profile, options? It seems everything I could possibly do in my UserCP is locked out. The lead post in this thread does not address this limitation, nor can I see how that would reduce spam.

You should be able to do all this now as you now should be in the Trusted Members group.

Hey T2. I don't know why this is happening, but you don't have to upload the picture through bjorn3d.com. You can upload it on a different website, and then link it to here. That's how I do it, unless you want it to be small. I use photobucket.com, and it workes really good. There is another one called imageshack.us
Hope this helps

T2 is talking about the gallery section.
T2, don't worry about it as I get that error too; it seems the permission rights to the gallery section are restricted. I made a thread a while back about this problem and it has yet to be fixed.

I don't think there'll be another modding contest (even though I had fun) since the last one didn't turn out too great.

Guys, could you try to upload images now to the gallery? You will have to create your own album. I think I found the permission error that was stopping some to do it.
As for Mod are on the site. We do have the Benchmarks and Mods forum where you can post a work-log in a thread if you want. We used to have a dedicated case mod forum but it wasn't that used.
I definitely would like to be able to offer a good way for people to show off their mods, both before, under and after so if you got some idea what yoou would like to see for it just tell me and I think about it.
I'm currently planning all the work I will have to do this summer so it is the right time to suggest new features. I'm planning to try to migrate the site from Apache 1.3/PHP4 to apache 2/php5 though so that will take up a lot of my time :).

Hope your anti-spam policy is working well!
Must admit that I have just had a post deleted under these rules and it was only my second one! I accidentally put an etailers name in there, one of those ones whos name is a web style one.
To be honest I was not actually clear from this post just what "forum Spam" is. Any chance of ammending the warning so new member like myself who are not so forum savvy know exactly what you dont allow? i.e. internet links of any kind (including retailer names that contain partial web style addresses)
Regards.

Welcome to our community CaffeineBoost.Enjoy your stay here friend.
Writing a website/E-tailer name isn't spam.Posting warez, hacks, cracks, cheats, adult movies are generally prohibited in the forums.Freeware software link is all right though. You just need to stay as much as on-topic as you can.If that goes way too off-topic or your post doesn't relate to the current topic may be considered as spam. There's a different segment where you can discuss off-topic things but in other places you should stay on-topic.You shouldn't also use wrong words for anyone.
But, don't worry, you have come to the most nice, supportive friendly & knowledgeable forum on the net.Stay here & come back everyday & you'll know that.

I understand what you mean by forum spam now. I can see how it would be a real pain for everyone. This is new to me, so learning as I go.
Looking forward to picking the brains of the very knowledgeable people that seem to inhabit the forums though :)
