I guess this says it all pretty well...........;)

On the topic of DX10, Carmack said that there’s nothing at the moment motivating him to move to the new API just yet for Quake Wars, citing that he’s quite satisfied with DX9 and the Xbox 360. “DX9 is really quite a good API level … Microsoft has done a very, very good job of sensibly evolving it at each step--they’re not worried about breaking backwards compatibility--and it’s a pretty clean API,” he said. “I especially like the work I’m doing on the 360, and it’s probably the best graphics API as far as a sensibly designed thing that I’ve worked with.”
Gamers often look to Carmack to tell the fortunes of PC gaming hardware. His opinions on hardware can sway hardcore gamers to purchase one hardware choice over another. Those in awe of the potential offered by DX10 may want to hold off on that shiny graphics card purchase, as Carmack says that there isn’t a huge need for new hardware just yet, as current hardware is more than adequate. “All the high-end video cards right now -- video cards across the board --are great nowadays,” he said. “Personally, I wouldn’t jump at something like DX10 right now. I would let things settle out a little bit and wait until there’s a really strong need for it.”

And then there's this comment from John.............:)

Those wishing to take the plunge into DX10 will also have to do so while upgrading to Windows Vista. Carmack, however, isn’t all that excited about upgrading to the new OS: “We only have a couple of people running Vista at our company. It’s again, one of those things that there is no strong pull for us to go there. If anything, it’s going to be reluctantly like, ‘Well, a lot of the market is there, so we’ll move to Vista.’”

I'll agree with him for the first bit, now's not a good time to buy a DX10 card. But Vista, as long as your hardware will run it smoothly, should be an upgrade IMHO. Oh well... ;)

My thoughts exactly so why buy a piece of tech when you currently cannot use its main features?

Hey guys.

Ya I am not doing the DirectX10 or vista for at least a year.
I have played with Vista but XP is so damn stable now I have to say I love it it is not IMO time to retire it yet.

End of this year or quarter 1 of 2K8 I hope to be able to buy a Quad Intel, with DDR 3, so I guess you could say I am on the hold out. I expect to see a great difference in that system from what I ahve now. If I can hold out that long.

Vista may be ready with it's first service pack by then and then I can grab a possibly 3rd gen DirextX10 card for it, by then they will have figured out what is going on with DX10 by then.

O and I made the switch to Nvidia, when ATI started sleeping with AMD. So most likely I will be hitting the Nvidia camp for my next vid card.

I just started using one about 5 months ago, I like it, Sorry to ATI.

Yeah Gray has my trusty old BFG 6800Ultra that turned him to the darkside.

both graphic cards are good and bad , but carmack is right to jump into dx10 just to say you have it is pointless right now . if you running old dx 9.0 - 9.0b on a single core agp set up and have the money to upgrade go for it . but for those who has dual cores and high end dx9.0c cards ( x1800 - x1950 Ati , or 7800 gtx - 7950 gx2 ) i say just hold off for 6 months to see what the future brings . unless you absolutly need it ....

Vista is really a waste right now until multi threaded apps come out and X64 programs come out along with games. I will turn to Vista when nothing is emulated.
My thoughts exactly so why buy a piece of tech when you currently cannot use its main features? Why come out with PCI-E when AGP was currently the thing and the bandwidth wouldnt be used? To have the new technology. PCI-E2 will be put on boards now and most wont even know it but it will be there. Its just to be ready for the technology. Ill prolly buy an 8600ultra and not be able to use the DX10 features for about a year. (Depends on how it performs against my X1900XTX for DX9 games)

If you didn't catch on I was talking about DX10 and SM4.0.

I am talking about specs that can't be used and PCI-E, like AGP, is just a conduit between a graphics card and a motherboard and PCI-E can be used with any peice of hardware that supports PCI-E. DX10 can only be used on a DX10 related app so contradicting my statement with comparing PCI-E to DX10 is not really the same thing since you can use PCI-E even if you don't get the full amount of bandwidth.

DX10 is new tech but still, why would you buy something that was meant for DX10 when there is not DX10? There is no reason to waste money on a 8800 when a X1900XTX is still a fast card and there currently are not DX10 games?

If you want an example the Ageia PhysX is just that: no point on buying one the day it was released when there aren't any killer apps for it.

even now for the phsyx card, maybe 1-2 games? thats it

You can release as many games as you want that can use the PhysX card but it all depends on how much a games uses the PhysX's capabilities.

If you didnt read my post in the other thread i have an X1900XTX and will possibly get an 8600ultra, IF its better at DX9 games than my XTX. So i fully understand what your saying. Whats the point of getting a DX10 card when DX10 isnt out. Well 8800GTXs still own my X1900XTX at DX9 games, so one reason there, AND have the capability of running DX10 when its needed. Im just not that dumb to pay all that money when i dont have to.

Yup Scott your ole 6800 Ultra did the trick!
So much so a friend of mine who needed dual monitor support ended up grabbing one for himself.

I can't wait to see what my next rig has in store for me. : )

Darkorb can your name those 2 games? lol.
I Love the idea of PhysX but so far it's a complete and total waste of $$$ ATM.

I actually play a game that says it uses Ageia's PhysX. It's called The Entropia Universe.

How it would help this sort of game play I have no idea, there are no real Physics to deal with, I think it was just an after thought to get people to try out the game.

Project Entropia (http://www.entropiauniverse.com/en/rich/5000.html)

I do hope it takes off though as I am always a fan of more complex graphics; and the hardware the brings it.

GRAW (Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter) was the first i believe to utilize the PhysX card. Your game (for idk what reason) and the Cell game or w/e. I dont think its out yet though.

Yep, that guy is right. I will probobly not go and get geforce 8800 for a while now, and buy Vista. I have Vista on my computer right now, and had been using it, but found that a lot of old devices like my scanner, webcam, ... are not working, and there are no drivers released yet. The video card drivers are not stable yet, since even when I could start Need For Speed Carbon on Vista, it was going like I had the video resolution on 640 x 320, and the screen would desappear all the time, and the FPS would be really low. Now if I would win those nice XFX Gefore 7900's, then I would not chance for like a long long time, since those are really great video cards. It does not matter if it has DX9, like how the guy said, that games won't really come out for DX10 for a while. I'll say wait for the games to first use DX10 and Vista to have more programs working for it, and wait for the prices to go down on the video cards, and that's when I buy all of it.

Vista isnt even released yet, and it probably wont be a good idea to get a copy until its bundled with SP1. So you cant exactly judge it yet.
