Hi there everyone, as you might or might not know, i purchased the ASUS A8N-SLI SE motherboard.

I have connected everything, and she seems to be running fine, but only one of my DVD drives are being detected. As with that, when i stick in the XP disc to do a clean install, nothing comes up saying, Press a key to boot from cd..

I dont no what to do, and instead of the Press a key to boot from cd.. I get the error messege, it goes along the lines of, Error insert correct boot disk, somthing like that.

Any help would be greatly apreciated!

Have you tried to remove all cables and such from one of the DVD-drives? If not, do that and make sure BIOS are set to boot from cd...

So you have two ROM drives on one ribbon cable? if so which one does not show up? Primary or Secondary?

A simple solution would be to scrap one ROM drive as you really only need one DVD burner unless you like to copy cds on the fly.

If u have 2 drives on the same channel, try changing one drive's jumper to Master & the other drive's jumper to slave or u can also try changing both drive's jumper to CS (Cable Select). That should work. Also try disconnecting the ide cable & attaching that again. The problem may be that both of ur drive's (which r on the same channel) may have the same jumper setting.Change one to Master & the other to Slave.

The MASTER MUST be the one on the END OF THE CABLE!!

Slave will be the on the connector next in the series to the end.

ok thanks guys, i had 2 connected at once, and it is the cable with 2 on one end, so it can connect to both

now, when im installing XP, it says that there is only 131000mb of room on the HD, i dont get that, since its a 250gb hard drive.

im gonnna install everything, and see if its all compatible, do 3dmark, oc a bit, and see if its stable, then i was thinking of rreformatting again, but this time i want the full specs of my hd, thanks for your help everyone!

Be sure the version of Windows XP you are installing is at least Service Pack 1 level.

Pre-SP1 had problems with drives over 130GB.

darkorb
03-10-2007, 06:02 PM
i just installed SP2, but yet it still only shows 130gb

Edit: im trying to do 3dmark06, but it says need Directx, so i go to dl that, then during installation, it says
"A cabinet file necessary for installation cannot be trusted. Please verify that Cryptographic Services are enabled and the cabinet file certificate is valid."

and ntune just won't install

Try updating the motherboard BIOS.

You didn't kill off any of those "svchost.exe" processes listed in your Task Manager, did you? ;)

darkorb
03-11-2007, 01:02 AM
haha no kougar, this is a fresh install of WINXPPRO 32bit

just tto clarify things up, most of the problems have been fixed, thanks but these ones still remain

usb2.0, it just, isn't detected
my hd is 250gig, only 130 is recognized
and my superPI score is 45 for 1m, however on my old mobo, with a much MUCH worse mobo, i was getting 40, do i just need to fiddle?

and last, should i OC from Ntune or bios?

thx :)

Try a windows based partition app and see if you can make the partition larger.

The USB setting could be set at v1.1 so make sure the USB option in the BIOS is set to V1.1/2.0.

For overclocking I set most of the settings in the bios and use ClockGen but nTune works just as well if not better since it has more options.

darkorb

usb 2.0 is enabled in the bios, and i re-installed the most recent Chipset drivers, still no luck with either 2.0 or HD

sushrukh
03-11-2007, 10:53 PM
I'm not sure but it may be a mobo problem then.

darkorb
03-11-2007, 11:57 PM
this mobo should support USB2.0 correct? thats what i was assuming..

and with the HD problem, i have no effin idea

darkorb

do you think i could plug my hd cable into sata slot number 2? maybe this number 1 slot is faulty..

would that work? or mess somthing up

Kougar
03-12-2007, 05:43 AM
Superpi difference is at least somewhat attributable to Vista... a single memory timing difference could account for the rest.

Vista should only see what the drive was formatted to be... so what did you format the drive with? Give this a read: http://www.tweakvista.com/Article38991.aspx (http://www.tweakvista.com/Article38991.aspx)

werty316
03-12-2007, 06:13 AM
Using another SATA port wouldn't mess anything up so give it a try.

Have you tried an GUI based partition app?

sushrukh
03-12-2007, 08:56 AM
If u r not using Raid, don't forget to disable that from Bios & yes,try another sata port.

You need to disable some features from the BIOS. Some of the features are not physically on your board and you need to disable it from the BIOS to avoid problems.

Here are the features you need to disable if they present in ur Bios : -

* Onboard Marvell LAN
* Silicon Image SATA Controller
* Speech IC Reporter

Sorry, I read your earlier post wrong. Find your way to Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Drives. It should tell you everything you need to know regarding your hard drive and if it needs to be reformatted.

darkorb
03-12-2007, 04:31 PM
What does this mean?

sushrukh
03-12-2007, 05:22 PM
Oh, this is the case. You have not formatted ur whole HDD my dear. You have only formatted near about 128 GB(127.99 to be precise) of ur 250GB HDD.There's still 104.90 GB of partition left that needs to be formatted(u can see that is named as " Unallocated" under the black header on the right). You can get that partition by right clicking on that unallocated area & clicking New Partition. Then u'll have the to total space of ur HDD.

darkorb
03-12-2007, 05:28 PM
and when i click format, will that delete everything? or just format the unallocated space

Thanks alot for the help, gonna format it tonight, since its gonna take a long time.

But i feel the neeed to do a clean re-install of windows, since my BF2 is kinda messed up, iv installed it, but the patch says it can't find the directory and closes.

And with my USB2.0, you think a re-install would help?

WHen i re-formatted, i installed all the updates, and then i did SP2, then my anti-virus, then all my app's, was that the correct procedure?

sushrukh
03-12-2007, 05:44 PM
If u click format on the unallocated place,it will simply format that single area.Your C drive will remain unchanged.

And format takes only 10-30 secs. Why r u saying that it will take long ? Be sure to check the option of Quick formatting.Windows XP formats drives super fast.Try it right now.

The right way of installing things are :- You have done something wrong in the process. The right process r :--

1.Install XP
2.Install SP2 right after the XP installation & b4 installing updates.
3.Now, install any updates.
4.install anti-virus & ur apps.

Be reminded that u'll have to install SP2 b4 installing the updates for ur mobo. USB 2.0 will work only if u follow the upper process but you have installed SP2 after the updates. That's why USB 2.0 isn't workin'.Best of luck & let us know what happens.I prefer a clean full install.Reinstall will not help.

darkorb
03-12-2007, 05:56 PM
ah, time for a re-format then :)

thanks alot sushrukh, apreciate it very much

i will try a re-format later tonight, get back to you guys soon!

03-12-2007, 06:28 PM
Just follow these pictures & u'll be able to create & format a new partition.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 1:-Right click on the unallocated area & select " New Partition".

http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/6126/xpmanual4dk1.gif

Step 2:-Just follow the picture1 to picture 4.Don't change the values as shown in the picture 3.That picture is only for reference. These should be the screens what you'll be seeing when u will create a new partition.Just follow the screens & don't change any numeric values on those steps.

http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/9821/xppartition1lg9.gif

Step 3 :- Change the "volume level" option. It'll be your new drive name.Change the drive name as what u think ur new drive name should be.The default is :- New volume.Enable the " perform a quick format " checkbox.

http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/540/xppartition2rr4.gif

After this u'll be able to use ur whole HDD space.Check that u've created the new partition correctly by viewing at the following picture.

You will notice that the black header on top of the unallocated area which was present on the screenshot that u've provided has now transformed to blue with the new drive name that u've assigned on the step 3.

http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/115/xpfinishedbt4.gif

Best of luck.

darkorb
03-12-2007, 06:49 PM
thanks alot,

why would i want an extended, instead of primary?

sushrukh
03-12-2007, 07:37 PM
Primary should be used only where u want to install an operating System. If u want to install 2 operating systems on both C drive & D drive(ur new drive will be "D" by default as u've already have the C drive).

So, it's simple. If u want to install 2 Operating systems on both drives, then format using the Primary partition & if u think that u'll only use only 1 OS,then format using the Extended option.Don't worry, you'll be able to use the new partition irrespective of ur choice(Primary & Extended).

I just don't understand why u've used near about the half of ur HDD as the C drive.Do u have other HDDs in ur PC ?

darkorb
03-12-2007, 10:41 PM
Nop only a single 250gb Seagate

sushrukh
03-13-2007, 12:53 AM
Then i think u shouldn't use the whole 128 GB for only ur C drive. You can reduce it to 30 GB & partition the rest into several drives so that u can have separate drives for ur different works. You can define a partition size & also u can create new partitions at the time of installing XP.

What problem will arise if u want to keep ur current C drive size at 128GB ?
Well, generally where we put Operating Systems,we don't or rather can't store or save our backups there coz if something goes wrong with the OS, ur whole data will be lost coz u may need to format the partition. So, u will need to remove all ur backups to a different drive everytime u'll need to format the OS drive.

But if u make the OS partition small,(while still having place for installing apps) u'll have the room for making several other partitions where u can save ur data & u won't have to save ur data to the OS drive. So, if something goes wrong with the OS, ur data will stay unchanged coz only the OS drive needs to be formatted.

Sorry, i don't know if u have the idea of this or not.If u know these already, please ignore this post.

I'm actually saying this coz I saw that ur C drive is exceptionally big & u don't have enough rooms for saving ur data. The above suggestion is my opinion only.Best of luck & don't forget if u wanna create/format ur partitions, u can easily do that at the time of installing XP.

darkorb
03-13-2007, 01:39 AM
thanks, my c drive is 128, and my F drive, the new partition is 107

i can just save all my stuff, onto the new drive, which is more than enough

Thanks for all the help, everything has been fixed, except my USB2.0 ports still arn't recognized. I have tried everything :(

werty316
03-13-2007, 02:15 AM
I guess using a partition app worked then huh ;)

One good thing about having two partitons on the HD where the OS is that if you need to format, you don't need to backup everything.

Could u please give me a screenshot of ur device manager's lower portion ?
At the end of the device manager window, there is an option called " Universal Serial Bus Controllers ".Click on the plus sign(+) left to it & it'll reveal more options. Now take a screenshot & post here if u can.

Pls post the screenshot so that i can tell u what's the problem ?

Also, do u have the latest bios installed 4 ur mobo & r u sure that USB 2.0 is enabled in the Bios ?

Here is a screenshot of my device manager, what really upsets me, is that whenever i plug in a USB mass storage device, in this case my ipod i used to back everything up, everything basically freezes, i cant click my taskbar, My Computer doesn't open, for about 5 minutes. Then it works fine agian..

Kougar
03-13-2007, 09:25 AM
Hm, try this: Right-click the "Universal Serial Bus" USB controller that shows the yellow ? mark, select Properties, then click the button to uninstall the driver. Once it finishes reboot the machine, and see if it comes back...

It's worked for me once or twice when the USB bus driver got corrupted.

Do, what Kougar says first. Then i'll tell u another method if that doesn't work.

Kougar, Sushrukh, and any others that helped, I want to that you very much. THANK YOU!!!!!!!

I love you, i was going to have to resort to take my computer in, and have to pay $60 bucks to get this all fixed. Whenever my computer isn't working properly, i feel that part of my life is missing, so i can't focus on anything till its fixed :P :explode:

I think that the USB2.0 problem is fixed, since the messege doesn't pop up saying 1.1 anymore. And the "Yellow ? " isn't there anymore in the device manager.

But how do i check for sure that its running as 2.0?

thanks againyourock:   :wow: :wow: :thanks:

sushrukh
03-13-2007, 05:17 PM
Congrats brother.I'm also very happy for u that u won't have to pay any money to get ur PC fixed.

But how do i check for sure that its running as 2.0?

At the end of the device manager window, there is an option called " Universal Serial Bus Controllers ". Click on the plus sign(+) left to it & it'll reveal more options.

Check for this option there :- " Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller ".

If those words in Bold does show up there, then yes u have got the full potential of USB 2.0 coz
the word " Enhanced " means USB 2.0. Let us know that.

See this Picture :-

I just noticed something, whenever there is nothing playing on my computer, music, video, there is like a whiny hissing, or slight squeeking coming out of my speakers, and whenever i adjust my volume on my g15, there is a slight poping sound. Should i re-install audio drivers?

These are the more recent ones from the asus website.

sushrukh
03-14-2007, 01:55 AM
I think u'll have to adjust the speakers.Bass, treble etc.I think u should reduce the sound from ur speakers while keeping the windows volume high/full.First try this, turn ur windows volume(I mean from windows or from audio softwares) to full. Then turn ur speaker's volume down by adjusting the volume control from speakers.Lastly, disable any 3D sound options from ur sound control software.

If that doesn't help, then try installing the audio drivers again & also visit " support.asus.com " for any updated audio drivers for ur mobo.

The squeeking audio.

Kougar
03-14-2007, 08:17 AM
Squeaking audio, such as from moving the cursor around or max/minimizing windows and menus? If so that's a byproduct of electrical feedback bleeding into the onboard sound, and a big reason why people prefer sound cards as they isolate the sound from the electrics better.

Only remedy really is to max out both your windows volume and wave volume, then turn down your speakers... this can hide the noise or at least diminish it. Nothing short of getting a sound card will fix it though.

03-14-2007, 09:43 AM
Kougar, i've already advised the same to darkorb in post number 47 on the previous page (page 5) but that didn't seem to solve his problem. He may have placed his speakers too near to an power outlet.

Yea, whenever i move the volume up or down on windows, it squeeks, but i found a height on that volume bar that doesn't squeeke. So ill just increase the volume from my speakers then :P
