Hi, guyz.I've just won a Pentium D 820+ CPU in the ECS Global Online Promotion.
I know that, this is not at all a good CPU but for now i won't have to buy any CPU & i can invest in a better CPU in future when their prices will get decreased.

Do u guyz have any idea which AMD CPU is this Pentium D 820+ equivalent to & how hot it gets when running in full load ? I know that it's inferior to the X2s.
Any good review/comparison/roundup of this 820+ & equivalent AMDs ?

I'd take a guess at the AMD 64 3000+ Orleans... it mostly depends on the program you are thinking of in question though.

Thanks Kougs. It's really painful that a Dual core equates to a single core though.

I was trying to mean " Games ".

Use the charts here to see what it roughly equates to.

Thanks XJ.
As this 820+ only supports DDR II 667 Mhz,will there be any compatibility issue if i use 800 Mhz & better frequency modules ?
I mean will i have to downgrade my memories to 667 Mhz if they need to work with the 820+ CPU or i can use them in DDR2 800 mode ?

I remember entering that contest a while ago. How come I didn't win? :ahhhhh:
Congrats on the win :icon_tiphat:

Thanks slugbug. You may have seen out of 53 winners,22 are from Taiwan & 13 from China.:ahhhhh: I've enquired ECS about that strange thing. They replied that nearly 80% of the contestants were from this two countries. That's why other countries did have a very slim chance of winning.
Btw, congrats to u too Gary Smith on your winning of XFX Fatal1ty 7600GT Silent.

Congrats man !!!
These little PDs are pretty nice.
I'm not sure about the one you got but I have a PD805 OCed to 4GHz though the multi is 20 but I think you could get around and build a decent machine with that.
And then later on when you get more money get a C2D

Thanks Schwarz.Ya, i can see that u r using ur CPU OC'ed to 4Ghz.That's great but u r using a Lian-Li cooler for that to happen.Do u have any idea Schwarz, that if u would have used ur stock cooler how far could u overclock ur 805 ? I mean did u try to overclock ur CPU with the stock cooler ? How far it can reach ? My 820+ defaults to 2.80 Ghz.I'm expecting that i can OC it to 3.5 Ghz using the stock cooler. Donno is that possible or not ? In that contest this was the lowest priced one & there were even 680i SLIs to be given away.Ya, I'll upgrade to a C2D when i have money & i think i'll wait for the Quadcore's price drop.

BTW the cooler he is using is a phase changing cooler and I don't think you can get the 805 to 4GHz on air. Give this 805 overclocking article here: http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/05/10/dual_41_ghz_cores/
You should be able to being that 820 to 3.5GHz but prepare for alot of heat as its one hot chip.

Well with stock I could hit around 3.4 3.5Ghz
In the high temps.
I then got myself a Zalman CNPS 9500 and could go all the way to 3.8Ghz.
Now I use a Mach II GT wich get me up to 4GHz with a vcore of 1.55v wich is pretty high.
I could go a lot higher since my temps ar at 6 degrees celcius CPU and the Mach II GT is at -35 right now but 4GHz is pretty much the limit of the PD805 since 4.1 is not stable at all and I would have to keep on upping the Vcore and I would probably go on and burn it.
But like I said man you could build something pretty nice with that procy start out with it OC it a little to get a little boost and then later on get a C2D since the prices will drop and you will already have a LGA775 mobo.
(Don't buy an old LGA775 board though since it will not support newer C2Ds.)
One more thing werty thats the article that got me to build this machine but toms is biased as HELL.
He will promote products in his reviews a lot of the times.
Saying that using the stock cooler under full load at stock 2.66Ghz got them at 76degrees celcius is a little exagerated...it should be a lot lower.
sushrukh
03-30-2007, 11:17 PM
I'm not going to buy any 775 mobo now Schwarz coz u may know that i've actually won an LGA775 mobo in this very month, which supprts upto Quadcores.
Link :- http://www.bjorn3d.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12683
Now i'll only have to buy a 1GB module & a good PSU.Ya, i know 2GB would be better but i can't invest more than that now coz here everything is pricey than the US countries. If u can buy a 2GB kit for about $200 in US,we'll have to pay nearly double. That's right.Currently $400 is the price for 2GB kit in here.
I think i'll stick to my stock cooler & let's see how the OC goes.I can't OC much coz this CPU won't come with any warranty.
werty316
03-30-2007, 11:26 PM
If its a retail CPU, it should have a warranty but overclocking the CPU will make it null and void.
sushrukh
03-30-2007, 11:38 PM
I've never got any kinda warranty with the prizes i've won outside of my country.Ya, it should be a retail CPU with the original box & HSF but if i need to RMA it i'll need an invoice for that which i can't show the Intel RMA guyz coz non-purchased items don't come with invoices.

Just tell them you won it from an ECS contest or confirm with ECS if it comes with a warranty.
Warranty or not its not like you are gonna do something bad to kill the chip.
sushrukh
03-30-2007, 11:50 PM
Thanks Werty.I'll try that but I'm pretty sure that if i tell them that i've not purchased it, they will simply tell me that " throw it out & get a new one." That sucks about them.
Most contests today do come with a rule like " we r not providing any kinda warranty with the prizes & stuff ". I can't remember what ECS has listed as rules though.
If i would have won it directly from Intel, then there would be a chance.Anyway, i'll ask ECS that if possible can they give any warranty with it ? I don't think they will say yes though.

It not up to who made the contest that provides a warranty of the product being given away, its up to whoever the manufacturer of the product is.
Anyhow it sounds like you are gonna use the CPU regardless of a warranty so you shouldn't worry about it - afterall, you got it for free.

I've previously won an MSI laptop directly from MSI's global site. When i've confirmed my address info to them i was told that MSI isn't providing any warranty with it.Though the lappy is working fine, i'm a bit worried about the warranty issue. You know that in this March, i've won an MSI mobo & a Foxconn 7950GT.Both of them did come without warranty. Now, it's impossible for me to get them repaired if they require RMA & i'll have to start using my AMD Athlon XP rig again in that case.

Not completely free .There r duties.I just hope they don't write the actual value.
werty316
03-31-2007, 12:05 AM
You are forced to pay duty for it? That sucks.
sushrukh
03-31-2007, 12:33 AM
Ya, that sucks.Every custom officials r corrupted there. They just want to earn money/bribe by any means. They r currently charging near about 36% :ahhhhh: of the value that's written on the shipping docs. That means more than 1/3 of the written value.Just think if u won an SLI set of 2 8800GTXs & u'll be asked to pay 36% of it.How much will it be ? I've tried once by saying that i'm a student & i can't pay such large duties. They just told me that " Then we will sell ur prize & get our charges from that ". Now u can understand that receiving even a prize is kinda painful here.

Sorry for the late reply, my internet went down. Not sure why you are saying the Pentium D 820 only supports DDR2 667 RAM... it is wholly dependant on the motherboard as far as RAM compatibility goes. For Intel systems the memory controller is built into the chipset, so the Intel CPU won't care if it's using DDR266 or DDR2-800 as long as the chipset supports it.

Remember, there are different steppings i believe?
Or is that only with AMD
sushrukh
03-31-2007, 01:46 AM
Ya, steppings r there too.Schwarz's Pentium D 805 supports A0 stepping while my 820 supports both A0 & B0 steppings.

Well there's 2 things you can do man if you burn your CPU.
Ask ECS to send you an invoice for your prize.
Or what you do is buy a PD820 in a cheap little shop and swap them :p hehe
But usualy if you look at your temps and keep it cool then you should be fine.
I used to have my 805 run around 60 65 at one time and it never burnt.
sushrukh
03-31-2007, 02:52 AM
60 65 in idle or full load ?
Schwarz

You also need to remember not all rigs are the same and not all chips overclock the same so you might not get the same results as on HotHardware.
sushrukh
03-31-2007, 11:28 AM
Ya, that's true.I also will not OC it to the fullest coz it will not come with any warranty but i'll have to pay duties to receive it.So,i'm thinking to OC it from the default 2.80 to 3.2 or 3.3.When i'll have the money & the CPU prices will fall i'll go for a C2D.Those are pretty decent OC'ers.
