" AMD's flagship ATI Radeon HD 2900 XTX fails to usurp the GeForce 8800 GTX's performance crown.AMD is close to unveiling its long-awaited R600-based ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT. DailyTech previously posted benchmarks comparing the Radeon HD 2900 XT and GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB.
Up until March of 2007, the spearhead of the ATI Radeon HD 2900-family was the upcoming ATI Radeon HD 2900 XTX. This model is the big daddy of AMD’s DirectX 10 lineup, poised to take on NVIDIA’s GeForce 8800 GTX and upcoming 8800 Ultra. "

Just so you know, that site is a little biased,...............;) Still better to wait and see just what happens when the retail cards are released. Who knows, there may not even be a top end card from ATI this time around, time will tell though................:)
That was a pretty hot topic on a few forums yesterday when it first came out.

I never was hopeful for this round of ATi cards. I am more hopeful for the next round.

Along with any non-official retail benchmark, a big pile of salt is needed.

I'm sure these numbers will be somewhat close to what the retail product will put out. There will de differences but probably not by much. Even though they compared it to a factory overclocked 8800GTX it still doesn't look good for ATI.
The important thing to remember here is this ATI card is coming out 6 months after nvidia released their 8800GTX. ATI should be releasing a card that has enough performance so as to not be bested by an overclocked card that's 6 months old. It looks like their not going to be able to do that.
Even though these benchmarks aren't of a retail card, they are of a card that's pretty darn close to retail and they were done by a fairly reputable site. Choosing to pit the ATI card against an overclocked nvidia card may not have been the most ethical thing to do but there are companies out there selling 8800GTX's at those clock speeds so I guess it's not totally bogus.

Yah I have taken a look at that article.
I have been using ATi cards for a long time but recently started getting Nvidias
I guess it was when I won the 6800GS back in feb of 2006 I think.
Anyways in my opinion I think we should wait for retail versions before we start comparing both cards.
Personnaly if I were ATi, why would I send a less powerful card to a reviewer.
Its not like ATi doesn't know about the 8800GTX and never actually tried one.
They still have plenty of time to tweak it.
On paper the card looks better then the 8800GTX...thats on paper still but we'll see when it goes retail.

" The launch and retail availability will be on the 14th, one day ahead of 8800 Ultra's arrival in retail, following a paper launch on the 2nd. This paper launch was also the cause for the ATI R600 rumour to appear.
AS THE OFFICIAL unveiling of R600 gets ever closer, more and more concrete dates are starting to appear. And disappear. And move.
The latest news is that while DAAMIT was hoping for a top-to-bottom public launch of its R600 range - from the Radeon HD 2400, through the HD 2600, up to the HD 2900 XTX - that is now not going to happen.
The launch of the Radeon HD 2900 series is now being pulled up to May 2, instead of the previous May 14 date. On that May 14 date, the 2600 and 2400 will appear. However, both of these are soft launches. Whilst the 2900 will appear on the 2nd, it won't be available to buy until the 14th. Whilst the 2600 and 2400 will be unveiled on the 14th, neither of those cards will be widely available until the middle of June at the earliest.
Lastly, don't expect to see the Radeon HD 2900 XTX at all this month. That card, which has 1GB of DDR4 memory, has performed so poorly in initial performance previews that it may well be pushed back indefinitely, whilst the kinks with DDR4 are worked out. "

The AMD-ATI HD 2900XTX is indeed VERY dissapointing and I think that a lot of people will turn off to ATI-AMD after this has been published...
Who knows, but maybe ATI-AMD won't be officialy releasing this card after their know/saw the results...;-)
But let's all not forget that there is still a bit of respect to this card, as it includes a built-in Physics engine and I'm not sure if this engine was taken into considration and/or if it had any effect on the performance when they've tested and compared between the cards...
