So I'm getting pretty close to graduation now, and in a few months will lose my e-mail account at the university. I'd like to replace it with something comparable, but I really don't know the first thing about e-mail. The system I currently use is IMAP which has a pretty nice webmail interface (http://www.horde.org/). I want to be able to create folders and set filter rules to separate content into said folders on the server side.

Someone teach me please :)

I just use the standard free services out there, Hotmail and Gmail, I've got no complaints with either of them.

I've got a hotmail, gmail, yahoo mail account as well; not enough of a fan of any to really use them full time.

I've got a few others from the different IPS I have, but for the most part they are extremely slow and I don't like their interface............;)
I guess I just like hotmail cause I've been using it almost from the begining when MS offered it.......:)

I have both a gmail and yahoo account. I suggest going with something not related to an isp or organization that could cut your account off like your university is doing.

I have my doubts that ISP would cut off my account, unless I cancel my subscription ;) As it doesn't make much sense to be tied to a particular broadband provider, I will certainly avoid any ISP email services. I've used optimum online, verizon, and comcast now, and they are all pretty poor (not to mention they only offer POP). As far as organization, I'm not sure what you mean.

I'm thinking the only way I can get what I want is to either to buy a domain and run a server from my house, or buy some kind of dedicated hosting that carries a monthly fee.

You could always stick with like Gmail or something and use Thunderbird.

Sorry, I sort of share that problem. I primarily use Gmail for the exceptional spam filter, but the lack of folders is just stupid and bugs me more and more.

I am not sure if hotmail will allow you to tie in third party email programs like Outlook Express, but the original accounts dating several years back can still definitely do this. Outlook Epxress is the bare minimum for functionality but it has the basics and it has a folder system that easily works with hotmail accounts. Other 3rd party apps might still be able to take advantage of this, I'm not sure.

Interesting, I hadn't heard of that one yet. Windows Live Desktop is said to use advertising though, unless you are a hotmail premium user?

I'm going to be honest, one of the other reasons I don't want to use gmail is that I don't want my data stored on a huge corporation's server.
