I take a networking class at the local college. My instructor gave us this prompt as apart of our final. I already have the project done and turned in but I wanted to see how you guys would do things differently.
Consider the following two scenarios. You can write up each of them.
Be detailed in your explanation of steps, hardware and software.
1. A friend has just purchased a couple of computers for their family. The family has little experience with computers and some of the family members are afraid they will damage something but want to use email and the Internet. They live in Olivenhain.
They want to have high speed network access and they want the computers to be networked. Cox and Pac Bell DSL are available. They plan to do home banking and investments on the internet. Design a network that is "safe and functional." Configure the systems to be secure. Hint, think power, backup, hacking, virus, spyware…
The computers (2 PCs and a PowerBook) and the software (Office XP, Office for OS X) are in boxes when you arrive. What would you do?
Construct a proposal that will address all of the network and data security needs of this family. Explain your choices, i.e. cable or dsl, cable or wireless…
What would they need to buy, what hardware and software configurations will need to be done. Be complete! Include prices.
2. Prepare a proposal for a small business, an insurance company with 12 employees. There is currently no network. The users run a mix of Windows 9X, XP Home and 2000 Professional and most have Office 2000. There are 10 Pentium III 1.2Gh or later, you need to purchase 4 more computers, they use 2 regular temporary employees. Setup a network with high speed internet access, the company wants a website. Cox, Pac Bell DSL and T1 are available. Create a proposal that will provide network and data security for the company. Include recommendations for network connections, hardware and software. What are the steps that you would need to do to get the company online and networked safely.
Here is my project:
