I was told by one of your representatives, over the phone, that for the $3 shipping it included borkerage fees, duties, etc. Yet today I got a bill for 1/2 orders, I assume the next will be here within the next day or so for

$27.24 on a $48.82 order for 1gb of mem
the second order was for ~$200 for a dual channel kit of extreme mem 2x1gb performance memory, I was just wondering, why I am getting this now 3weeks since I received the items.

I know brokerage fees would be covered, but duties is something that is upto customs. Customs has been known to charge gst and a customs fee for items they look at.

edit, just noticed the PM function here, you can send me your info here too.

Do you have an account at http://forums.mushkin.com/phpbb2/index.php ? Could you make an account if you don't have one. Send me your order #, full name via PM there to Greg I will be able to get this looked into for you. How were you shipped the memory?

Thanks

Greg

Getting charged duty is a gamble when ordering from the US and if its electronics, chances are you'll get dinged.

got dinged for 40 bucks cdn, on 2gbs from mushkin its the chance you take ordering across borders. if you know the guy on the other end get him to mark it as a gift. think of the money you saved from mushkin and there awesome webstore and forget the duty fee lol mushkin rocks!

Marking it as a gift doesn't matter as much as the description and declared value.

Best way to minimize the chance of paying for any duties is express shipping like next day or 2-day express shipping.

Another trick with US -> CAN packages is declaring a value of less than $20.

Even if you think its a deal by buying in the US, it might not after you have to pay for any duty charges.

So Mushkin must ship via Fedex right? I hate how Fedex sends you an invoice by mail rather than ask payment on delivery like UPS does.
By the way most of that $27.24 consists of their hefty brokerage fee.
Taxes would consist of 14% of the value converted to Canadian funds.
I'd say taxes were $7.24 and brokerage was $20.00.
Here's what Fedex's brokerage rates were in 2004: http://www.stokecity.ca/FTN-FXG%20Brokerage%20Schedule%2003-01-04%20English%20Version.pdf
I imagine they've increased since then.

yea actually that was part of it LOL gift under 20 dollars. anyways i was told the same thing during a call to mushkin aswell. (ram was out of stock for over a week so i called about my 2 day shipping) but how are they to know canadian customs is going to grab your box out of the 10 000 there? cant blame them.

You won't find a brokerage fee list anywhere on Fedex's site. I found that 2004 list by googling.

UPS is being sued by an individual for overcharging on it's brokerage fees much as Fedex, DHL etc are doing. The complaint is if Canada Post's brokerage fee is only $5.00, then what right do they have to charge so much more.

OK but since I couldn't find it anywhere on their site, isn't that hidden fees? Which are illegal

Call them and express your concerns about that. Also ask them why their brokerage fee is so much more than what Canada Post charges.
Another thing with Fedex is they don't give you the option to do the brokerage yourself like UPS does.

It also really bugs me that, not only is it nowhere to be found on their site, but why didn't they leave the bill when they dropped it off?, Or make me pay then

Thats a trick so you don't return the package.
Since COD packages are often returned because what they are asking is a little ways too high thats why fedex just gives it to you so you don't know how much it will cost and then BANG you receive it a week later in your mailbox with a nice little price tag.(They can charge you whatever they want since you already accepted the package)
Usualy let's say you buy something off of ebay for like 30 bucks and you receive the duty fees of like 20 something bucks then you realise screw that I'm returning it (like my friend did) then the shipping company is losing money to return it and they get no one to charge it to.
So yes FEDEX are ripoffs and i still wonder why so many companies do business with them.

I could understand if it was like 5-7 days but it has been 22days since I received the item

Fedex sends you a duty/tax bill to you about a month or too after you received a package so there is no delay in and you can have your package. Of course thats if you they charge you and duties or taxes. There is a trick on how to avoid this though :icon_tiphat:

How does one avoid this as I just got slapped for another $75.07 of which 43.36 are brokerage for my Mushkin PC2 8600 Dual channel kit. I noticed that it doesnt say how long I have to wait until I "pay" this on the bills they sent

Sorry you have got these charges. I do not understand them much myself ?? Taxes are hard to avoid, but some of these brokerage fees are not fair really :help: .

If you don't want to take the chance of pay any duty or taxes there is one easy solution, don't order out of your country.

Like I said, you could always try calling Fedex and speak to one of their customer service reps. Ask why their brokerage rates are nowhere to be found on their website. You can also explain to them that since Canada Post only charges a $5.00 brokerage fee regardless of the value, then this is the amount you're willing to pay as well.

Be polite but firm and do not get into a shouting match. If you are treated rudely ask to speak to a supervisor. If enough people complain about their excessive brokerage fees then they will be forced to either make changes or lose business.

I am not sure if you can argue the brokerage fees between CanadaPost and Fedex since they are different shipping services and wouldn't necessarily have the same fees.

I think I could, as it is excessive charging, nowhere to be found on their site, and frankly the bill arrived 3+weeks later
