I just got a 7950GT as a RMA for a defunct 7900GT and I can't get the 7950GT to work.

When I first installed the 7950 I had the 93.71 driver installed and it appeared to run fine but after about 20minutes or so the screen displayed red rectangular boxes all over the screen so I uninstalled all drivers ran Driver Cleaner afterwards when I try to boot up my comp the 7950 may or may not display on the screen, when it does display its only a short time before rectangular boxes (usually red) show up and it gets to the point where nothing can be seen. After trying several times I did managed to reinstall the driver version that comes on the CD with the card ( it says 97.28B) and rebooted. It worked for about 2 minutes then the red boxes came back.

From what I can see when it does boot it seems like the card may or may not be sending anything to the monitor because 2 out of every 3 manual restarts will yield nothing but a blank monitor.

My systemspecs follow, I really hope you guys can help me out. Thanks in advance for any advice.

What power supply are you using ? Have you connected the PCI-E 6 pin connector to your card ? Also check the temp of your card from the Nvidia control panel & see if the fan is working properly.

I cannot see anything about PSU here. Since 7800GS, PSU is very important.
(6800Ultra require just 485W noting to do with current)

yh if its a no name PSU thats most likely your problem.. Maybe its a faulty card but my bets on the PSU.

It very well could be a PSU problem. To help determine the issue are you able to try this video card in another system? Also try connecting a different power cord to the back of the video card from the PSU after you disconnect everything else from the PSU except the motherboard, video card and main hard drive.

I unplugged everything including all fans, even went so far as to install the passive heatsink that came with it. I also tried varying between using an adapter that uses two 4pins to make a 6pin and the PCIe 6pin from the psu. Sadly though it still doesn't want to start up.

Well guys, does this mean that I need a larger PSU? If thats the verdict I'll have to get another one but I'd like to know if you guys have any recommendations on good PSUs that are <200$ around the 750W range with at least 50A on the combined 12V. Also the main connector has to be either 20 or 20+4.
