Yeh but what do you reckon it will be like in DX10?

That's really next to impossible to predict how it will perform in actual games, as there really aren't any out yet. There are a few canned DX10 benchmarks out at a few different sites, but they won't tell you a thing about real life performance. The card is the second fastest DX10 out (IMHO) right now, if it cann't push the up coming games, there's something wrong.

What resolution will you be playing the games at ? 640Mb is only better in high resolutions.

It's nice to have a bit in reserve for future games, you never know what the games of the future will bring.

Yeh i play at 1400x900 i know '320MB would be enough' ive heard it alot. But i want to have some juice left in the bag for future games.

just get the card man, its good and will be strong, even though the ati might beat it in some occasions, its not worth that etra $100 or so for 5 fps.

I would opt for that card if I were you.

Darkorb, in Britain (Pat's place) both the XT & GTS 640 retails nearly for the same amount as he told us.I would have opted for the XT in that case though because it may be loosing to the GTS in some or more cases but i think these are driver related & you can't ignore the power of 320 steam processors & 512 bit Memory bus.It has a massive problem of overheating & power consumption though as we all know but i'm still hoping a reasonable performance boost from the future drivers & AMD should also lower the price of the XT to the GTS 640MB level which has been done for the Britain.

All the driver fixs in the world won't help the heat and power draw problems, it's best to stay away from them if you can.........;)
I see no reasons to go out and ask for more problems when you don't have to, just stay with a known great product.

Ya, i agree, if the power & heat issues do matter to you, you should buy the GTS 640.

Yeah but who knows how long a more mature driver will come along that'll show the true potential of the HD2900XT. I think ATI will focus their eyes more on the R700 as there is not point on making current hardware better when nVidia will have their next highend GPU ready to go while ATI is still working on drivers that show the full potential of the HD2900XT.

There is a reason why ATI doesn't have a highend R600.

Here's a current review (drivers) of the 8800GTS 320 against the HD2900Xt, yes the 2900 does beat the little and much cheaper 8800GTS 320 in alot of the test runds, but by one hexh of a lot (3-4 FPS in most). And the cost differance in Europe is fairly large, €257 for the Geforce 8800 GTS 320MB against the over priced HIS HD 2900 XT for €357. That's one heck of a huge price differance for such a small preformance increase.

In all but one game the HD 2900 XT came out in front (we excluded the Tomb Raider Anniversary Edition as this game engine was unable to stress either card with average frame rates well over 100FPS at 1600x1200-4xAA settings) of the GTS 320Mb, the lead in Oblivion is due to the lack of memory space with on the GTS card. The other games hold a small lead, with only Colin McRae running ~15% faster on the Geforce card.

Yeh but the 640 which im looking at is the same/similar price and the XXX is more expensive than the HD2900XT..

You're going to have to decise on the card yourself my friend, no one can do that for you. You now know the good and bad of each and you're going to have to pick.....................;)

Well if they are the same price I think I would go the ATI

Oh really.................;)

It is very shocking how much of a gameplay difference there is between the Radeon HD 2900 XT and a GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB. S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Battlefield 2142, and Flight Simulator X were the ones we tested today where there is a very large difference in gameplay experience. Oblivion oddly enough, was much closer between the contenders, that is until we tried to scale the AA settings. Even with CrossFire we found 8X AA unplayable in Oblivion at 1600x1200, which is something that the single GeForce 8800 GTX can do easily, not to even speak of what it can do in SLI.

And that testing was done with a X6800 C2D, this will only get worst with slower CPU's, so just think of how pooorly they would perform with a E6400 or E6600 ............;)

As much as I "USED" to be an ATi fan (my 7900GT is the first nVidia card in years), I think nVidia is the right way to go right now for the serious gamer that's looking for real world performance in the way that games are ment to be played with a high-end video card (all the eye candy turned on). ATi just can't (hasn't) got the AA/AL thing right with this generation of GPU.
