Hey all,
Just posted on the main MoBo and CPU forum and then saw this forum...thought it might be more appropriate here.
Just purchased and received the xfx 680 LT and Intell Q6600 Core 2 Quad.
Installed the MoBo, and the CPU as well as memory (4 x 1 GB Corsair PC 6400 DDR2 800 Mhz).
When I plugged the power supply (brand new 700 w OCZ GameXstream) in, it gave power to the MoBo. Starting the unit would make fans run....however, when power is added to the CPU, nothing starts up!. System won't start or post. The OCZ power supply has two 4-pin 12v connectors, rather than one 8-pin, however, when seated together in the spot for the 8-pin, they fit perfectly.
I have checked and re-cheched my CPU alignment - seems to be put in correctly and there doesn't appear to be any bent pins....I can't figure this out...bad MoBo???? I have built a number of systems in the past and have never had this type of problem.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ken

First, using both 4 pins as an 8 pin is the correct move, the 8-pin splits to creat the 4-pins, no difference. as for the 775 socket it has small notches on the CPU to orientate with tabs on the actual socket.as for your problem I would try stripping out 2 of the gigs of ram before installing windows, alsoa make sure to use x64 based OS aswell.

I have tried stripping out 2 ram, even 3....the problem is, I am not even getting the unit to power up, let alone post, with the CPU power connected...I have oriented the notches on the CPU, however, I can't tell if I bent any pins (don't think so - it doesn't appear that way at least to the naked eye).
Like I said, this thing isn't even powering up...it is weird!

Try booting with a single stick of ram and going directly into the system bios and manually set the ram specs (tiimings and voltage). If that doesn't work, try using some low-end ram (5-5-5-18 @ 1.8v 1 stick) and try and get it to boot into the bios and change the memory settings to the Corsair stuff.

Bio,
I have tried a single stick of ram and even the lower end 1.8 v ram to no avail, absolutely NOTHING happens when the power turns on if the CPU power is plugged in (welll not nothing exactly-fans turn a quarter of a rotation, and the yellow light comes on on the motherboard and stays on, however the green light flickers for a milisecond and is gone).
Think the MOBO is DOA?

If you have another PSU, you might want to try that. It sounds like a power issue as those lights should come on and stay on. It's possible that the board is bad, but with the lights coming on then going out, I would suspect the PSU first. You could also try the PSU in another system to see if it works correctly, but I'm running the same PSU and it seems to be a fairly good stable unit, but you can always get a bad part.

Thanks,
I know this is confusing because I have posted in two different spots....I have tried an older ATX PSU unit I had (a good 500 watt ATX unit) and the problem persists so, I don't think it is the PSU.
Thanks for your advice under the xfx forum too.

Ooo, I had this problem with 2 computers within a week. It struck me when you said the fans spin up a lil bit and the light flickers a bit. Mine would spin up for about 2 seconds and then everything would shut down. In both cases it was the PSU

My dad had this problem with his computer system. The wierd thing about it was that when he switched the mobo battery, after that everything worked. Really wierd.

Try reseting your CMOS maybe.

Yes, thanks, I have reset the CMOS a number of times (using the pin procedure described in my MoBo manual), all to no avail....I really think it is a board or cpu issue. (hope not!)

LOL, OK reaching for the sky here but what about the I/O switch on the PSU or possible the mobo. i know when i push the power button on my P4 with the I/O switch in off on PSU the lights all blink adn the fan spins a 1/4 rotation then nothing. like i said reaching for the sky with this, check to make sure all front panel connections are in place i have seen mobos do something similiar with no front panel connection to fully turn the mobo on. there is no way you can have the CPU tested in another board or vice versa is there?

I'll go out on a lim here but try another CPU if possible.
Try powering it up without the 2x4-pin connectors installed in the 8-pin connector on the motherboard.

Thanks,
No, I can't try another CPU or board, however, I am going to take the rig into a shop tomorrow and have them test it. As for the suggestion of not connnecting the 2x4 pin power to the CPU, not sure what you mean....if I don't connect power to the CPU, fans will run and all lights on the MoBo will come on and stay on....I have been able to do this from the start. However, once I connect the power to the CPU, no dice, just a quarter turn of the fans, the green light on the MoBo lights up for a millisecond, and then nothing.
I have tried just using the 4-pin connection....have tried each of the two, to no avail.
Really stumped here.
have checked my power button pin position and appears to be okay, I can't see why the button would power on the unit and start the fans and keep the lights on when the CPU power is not connected if the button was messed up.
Anyways, thanks for the suggestions.

Well boys and girls,
Thank you for all your suggestions and advice....had the rig tested and it was definitely the MoBo. Will be sending it back to TigerDirect for replacement....however, in the meantime, I am up and running on an Intel board....I don't really want to install Vista again when I get my xfxnForce board back....any suggestions?
Anyone interested in buying the 680i LT SLI board for cheap?
Anyway, thanks all for your help.

This is a known manufacturing fault, some boards have a slight curvature (look down the edge of the mobo, look along the cpu side...), they will work fine on your desk, but as soon as you bolt them down inside a case, the curvature I mentioned earlier is being flexed in the opposite direction which causes some connections to be temporarliy broken.
I had this recently with an Asus P5N32-E (never touching asus again, 3x mobo in 2 months, all fubard), I sent my back as DOA.. I suggest you do the same, sooner rather than later.

hey, this is a really old thread dude, i MEAN REALLY OLD. the guy who started this threads has not been back around for over a month. Please dont Grave dig for the sake of posting!
If you read the whole thread you would notice he had sent it back and was awaiting the replacement to sell on here. Atleast read the thread before posting in something as old as this.

Yeah I knew the thread was old, but sometimes forums can be slowing moving (this one isnt all that busy) and people have to wait ages for info...
but point taken
