Ive had my PS3 for a little over 2 weeks now and I love it. I mean tit dos so much more than play games d the more I poke around the more I find.

I don't mean to sound like a fanboi but it streams video over my network from my computer. It upscales my DVD's (and makes them look really good) on my Westy 37", I can grab demo's with 3 clicks of the buttons, I can watch high-def movies and I can surf the web from it. I can actually visit bjorn3d and do everything a PC can do (albeit a bit slower with the built in keyboard)

Underpowered or not it is only getting better with time.

I've seen Fedora running on a PS3....But i've also heard bad things about the operating system as well...but i think i'll stick with my computer for gaming and for visiting bjorn3d

They arent that good, and tbh, ditch the extra BS in a console. You want that, get a PC. Proof in the pudding

I don't care how poorly it is or isn't selling.
It is an expensive unit to be sure. But that does not mean it is bad either.

I read all the press just like you guys. I am really pleased by it though. I was going to be setting up a sort of HTPC and was having a hard time with some of of the technical issues.

The PS3 really solved them for me. So for it to lose the extra stuff and be "only" a console would kill some of what makes it so great.

I can stream cartoons for my son to the TV from my computer that I download for him so I don't have to teach my wife how to go through an annoying process every time she wants to turn it on.

The games are great but they are such a small part of what I get from this thing.
I am not trying to change anyone's mind. Hate or love it as you will, I am happy with it and it only gets better with updates.

It's cool. I understand the PS3 is an easy target and to be honest if I bought it for any ONE thing I would probably be disappointed too.

The fact is I was not going to buy one even with the price cut. Then when I did some research and saw in the newest firmware at the time (1.8) it could stream videos and upscale DVD's I was sold.

It is a whole media center and I really get a kick out. But like I said as ONLY a console - there are no GREAT games. As ONLY a HIGH DEF player it's mainstream. As ONLY an upscale DVD player it is overpriced.

Together it is the GREATEST PIECE OF ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEEEN!! MWWWAHAHAHAHAHA

I know you like your PS3, and I would too if I got one for free.(same way I feel about Ipods) But if I were spending my own money it wouldn't be at the top of my list.

I'm not saying the PS3 is bad persay, but as usuall, Sony could have done better.

Certainly not me. I bought it through Amazon and mulled over the decision for about 10 days.

I agree Xero. Blu-ray is nice but not "SUPERIOR" to HD-DVD. Personally I would prefer whichever one is less-expensive to manufacture since most high-def games still come on regular DVD's anyways.

The extra room for movies is not such a big deal since I don't care for extras.

I like the way you put it the Gonz.
I don't have a PS3 or any other of the recent new consoles.
If I were to get one I would go for a PS3 though with all that it offers.
I have noticed so much immature kids over the net bashing the PS3 like that PS3 song on youtube and such and yet the PS3 fans are quiet, they like their little hot machine and enjoy it.
Sometimes I wonder... if others like their consoles so much how come you can see them on every forums whining instead of playing and enjoying their consoles???
Anyways i say give it time.
The PS3 has a lot of potential in my eyes.

I don't see it so much as the PS3, but I would like to see the cell processor go somewhere (one of the only things Sony did right). Game developers are going through hell programming for it though.

I think you're mostly paying for the Sony name rather then an actually good product, keeping in mind everyone has different ideas of 'good'.

Gonz, pay no attention to PP's opinion on the usefulness of this type of hardware. He doesn't get it: exhibit A - Yea i do, i own one now. Friend gave it to me becasue he thinks the same as me. Only difference between me and him, he has the cash to just "give it up" so to say. I dont. So, my opinion is still valid. The extra nonsense is a waste. I can only set it up at my friends house becasue he has the equivalent of 5meg cable there, and everytime i turn it on it DLs an aditional update. Seriously, did EA make this console? Im starting to wonder why people buy it. I know i wouldnt.

Sorry for going on a rant here but you know WHY the Wii is making it so big? Because its cheap, and smart. Plug and play, and it appeals to all audiences without the extra BS of the other 2 consoles. Sorry you want the internet with fast load ups? Then program a PC to make it fast, my bootup is about 35 seconds. Thats shorter than walking out to take a piss. Cartoons for the kid? Simple, burn them to DVD and plop it in. I know how it is trying to explain to somebody how to do this or that on a PC. Im sure if you could afford a PS3 you have a DVD player. And the quality? Im sure the kid dosent care how crisp the drawings are on the TV. Sorry but anybody can throw any kind of excuse out there for WHY the extras on these 2 consoles are good, but they arent good enough. It dosent weigh out the extra cost of these consoles. Wii is 250 at my Wal Mart 5 miles down the road, id pay for that. 400-600 is not worth it. Your average household usualy has some sort of PC in it right? Usualy for internet, email, and chatting. For that price you could get a TV Tuner card from ATI and do the same almost. HD decoding/encoding will be slow, but if you dont do it on the fly you still have your "PS3". End of rant, i think.

Xero (1)ne
07-25-2007, 07:47 AM
Yah the PS3 isn't suited for a normal household....A good gaming rig can cost quite some money to make and upkeep, but you can also make a PC do whatever you want too. I think the idea of making a console do some PC related tasks (internet browsing) is kind of useless. If you can afford a PS3 it is assumed that you can afford at least a decent computer too.

Nintendo is known for rock-solid products, I still play Tetris on my brick Gameboy still.

As image quality goes, kids and children might not care, but for adults I think they are lead into the HD thing too easily. Yah HD is great, but I really think the whole thing is a gimmick right now since your mostly only getting regular quality channels/movies still. I say wait till it's fully utilized all around.

With HD and games, I don't really see it as a priority since I think that games still aren't high enough quality for HD. Does anyone know what resolutions both consoles pump out?

Id have to say my PS3 looks better than my best friends 360. And i run on HIS 1080P plasma. There is a huge difference with HD and i DO give credit to the PS3 for that. It has some amazing quality in that area. If i remember correctly they can both handle 1080p right? Also, you have your HD cable, and satelite as well as your HD movies. Not only that, you can encode a movie on your computer to HD and it looks like 43780472x better. HD isnt overrated, only to exspensive.

PP: I'm surprised at that. I got both the 360 and a PS3 (and a Wii) and on my 1080p 40" Samsung the image quality is the same. In fact, the few multi-console games I've tried (just for fun to compare) the 360 in my view have came out on top. And so far IMHO nothing on PS3 has topped Gears of War. There's a few great looking games coming soon though on the PS3.

The 360 and the PS3 both are capable of dishing out great graphics. I think it's more up to the game makers how good graphics a game has and which looks best on each console.

I've set up TVersity on my media server and am currently trying to stream stuff to both my PS3 and 360. It's supposed to transcode on-the-fly but so far I've had issues with lots of stuff. When it works it will be a great way to use both as Media players in addition to pure gaming.

Up until I installed TVersity I though have mostly used my 360 for media streaming (in addition to gaming of course). I got a MCE machine with a TV card and I use the 360 as an extender to it to be able to watch recorded TV (and live) that has been recorded on the MCE machine. My plan is to take a new quieter Elite 360 and put it in our main living room and use it to give my wife access to the MCE machine (it has some stuff we dont get with satelite which is what is set up in the livingroom).

So far I do not think my PS3 has been worth the money. It has a lot of potential but I do regret buying it so early. I mainly use it to play PS2 games I haven't finished. One thing I haven't tried yet though is to connect it and the PSP and stream stuff to the PSP from it. I could see myself sitting upstairs streaming old TV series to the PSP ...

As for the Wii .. it's getting dusty at home. There's simply not much I want to play on it right now. I personally do not understand it is selling so much. And quite frankly - if the Wii is "the future" then I'll probably rather stop gaming all together. To me the Wii represents the same thing as Brittney Spears in music. I have no problem that people like that music but a future with only Britney Spears inspirated music is just as depressing as a future where the shallow Wii games are the only thing selling.

Did you know you can also port PS1 games to your PSP through your PS3? Thats pretty cool, but i cant do it cause i wont buy a PSP.

Where the Wii is concernd, its a matter of what you like really. My game from Nintendo is Zelda (hince the tattoo im getting of a Triforce) so of course i would love it. And alot of people like the "work out" from a Wii. I guess its a matter of preference. Some people like Playstaion, others like Xbox, the rest like Nintendo. Me, i like PEE CEE ahaha.

Bjorn I too use TVersity to stream stuff to the PS3 and I can shoot you a link that helped me A LOT.

The high def stuff isnt for the kids. Just the streaming stuff. To make it easier on my wife I copied the videos from the network onto the PS3 so the computer can be off (and save money) when the little ones watches cartoons.

The upscaling is for me and the thing I like most about it is that when I watched a dvd on my Hi-Def tv is looked aweful. The PS3 makes it look better then a regular DVD and it fits it to the screen very nicely.

Like I said, everyone has an asshole, I mean opinion, and that's cool. I don't want to change anyone's mind. I am just sharing my experience with it and I love it.

The Wii does well cause it's cheap and that's all most people want. That's cool. I am a tinkerer at heart and the PS3 lets me fiddle and tweak. At the end of the day I feel the PS3 justified the cost for me.

For you, well you have your own expectations and if the unit doesn't live up to them then it doesn't matter if it cost $250 or $500 it was a waste of money.

The main thing to enjoy about the wii is the social side of it. I'm known amongst all my friends as the gamer, however they love getting onto the wii and playing wii sports. I'ts popular to the general community, not just us gamers, that's why it sells so well

Bjorn I too use TVersity to stream stuff to the PS3 and I can shoot you a link that helped me A LOT.

Ahh, feel free to shoot over the link :). I just installed it only Mediaserver so I haven't tinkered so much yet. Thought I do that a bit later next week. I think I got some issues with the transcoding as most Divx AVI's won't play on either the 360 or the PS3. It is supposed to transcode the stuff.

The upscaling is for me and the thing I like most about it is that when I watched a dvd on my Hi-Def tv is looked aweful. The PS3 makes it look better then a regular DVD and it fits it to the screen very nicely.

Yeah, same for me with both the PS3 and the 360. It's nice with upscaling. Although you can get great upscaling DVD-players for next to nothing these days. But it is nice with less boxes.

The Wii does well cause it's cheap and that's all most people want. That's cool. I am a tinkerer at heart and the PS3 lets me fiddle and tweak. At the end of the day I feel the PS3 justified the cost for me.

Well, the Wii isn't that much cheaper than the 360 these days. Add in all the controllers you need for social gaming and it actually becomes quite expensive.

tyle6: That's great. But I don't play to loose weight. I play for fun. It's a nice side-effect with some of the Wii games (or with the Dance games on various consoles) but I want more from a console.

The main thing to enjoy about the wii is the social side of it. I'm known amongst all my friends as the gamer, however they love getting onto the wii and playing wii sports. I'ts popular to the general community, not just us gamers, that's why it sells so well

Yeah, I can see that. I've played it with friends a few times (my sister got so into tennis she hit her 5 year old son in the head with the controller :) ) but even among them we got bored after a while. A game like Buzz or Singstar or even Guitarr Hero has been much more popular. I guess my main problem is that I mainly play with others over the net. My main bunch fo friends are scattered all over the world so it isn't so easy to get people together.

I realize it sounds like I hate the Wii :) but that's not true. I did go and buy one the day it was launched (got lucky and found the last one in Stockholm that someone hadn't colelcted). But I have the same feeling towards the Wii as I have towards the iPOD, the AppleTV and in some ways the iPhone. I own an iPOD, a ATV and a Wii and it is all good products that somehow have been hyped beyond reason. The hype gets a life on its own. While having a great interface the iPOD for example still lacks a lot of usefull features that you get with for instance the Creative Vision M and is horribly locked with the DRM. Same with the ATV (and I've hacked mine although the hack has to be redone now that it's been updated).

I get a bit frustrated when I see a lot of competitor products getting looked over because they do not have the Apple or Nintendo brand name or the "design".

But we'll see what the future holds. Hopefully we'll see both the Wii and the PS3/360 move towards eachother with the Wii getting more deaper games while the PS3 and 360 get more shorter party-type of games.

And in the end the best thing for a gamer like me is to have all consoles :). That way I do not have to miss out anything.

what i was merely pointing out is that you can not even try to compare sales on a third generation saystems and a brand new innovative type of gamming. period. people are waiting for the new PS3 games and not buying it yet just playing PS2 still. as for the wii it has its own niche, as a social entertainment unit and arcade like gaming. something niether the PS3 or the 360 were ever marketed towards. i think alot of people here are looking over nintendos overzelous marketing along with apples way of pushing there products on to you. we are all just comparing an apple to an orange when the wii gets involved in this conversation.

The apple and orange are still fruit though, so no comparison. The Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360 are still consoles are geared towards one thing. So that dosent matter. Im sorry, but the "waiting on games" thing has been OVER OVER OVER used. If it was to happen, it would have already.

tyle6

yes, apples and oranges are both tree fruit,so are pears. and the XBOX360, PS3 and Wii are consoles. thus the comparison. tree fruit cannot be compared as consoles cannot. just becasue they are consoles doesn't mean they belong in the same basket.

this isn't still over your head is it?

I think that the Nintendo name has a lot of good things about it because you know your getting a durable product, although Nintendo does very good at keeping their systems cheap and rock solid so idk if they are really trying to sell their name.

Sony and gaming isn't so good....I do think Sony has awesome speakers, and some pretty good TV's, their Walkmans were flimsy though. I think Sony does some things good, and others they just can't.

Apple.....where to begin.....I do not like Apple because their products are really not that great. Not that they don't do what they are meant to do, but I'm someone who doesn't like converting everything to some weird format to play it on a portable device that has crap for battery life and the company that grabs you by the balls in-case that battery ceases to function. I think Apple used to be good...but I find a lot of their stuff being over-rated because if you shop around you can find much better deals....

I forgot what this thread was even about.....:threadjacked:

Oh and Tyle, I wouldn't put consoles in a basket. They might get scratched....

tyle6

Lol, you don't talk bad about my 360 and Wii and I won't crap on your PS3 :)

I love the 360 and have gotten my moneys worth out of it. Only gripes.... Have to have DVI to upconvert to to 1080 on the Pro, or the Elite which was released a month ago. Thing is very loud.

We got a Wii a month ago and my wife and daughter love it. They have been having a blast. I like the Zelda game, but Red Steel seems cheesy. The web browser is only somewhat useful. Rayman is a lot better on Wii than the 360. Don't call the Wii the cheaper system. By the time you compare the price of the console, SD cards, controllers, component cables, etc, you could have spent about as much as a 360 Pro. It is a good system though.

I never liked the PS controllers and they never had a "MUST HAVE" game that I wanted to play so I never bought one. I'm sure the 3rd one is a great system though and I'll never say I won't have one.

I miss my Sega Genesis :)

http://stage6.divx.com/user/Kstar/video/1412104/Gran-Turismo-5-Prologue---E3-2007---HD-Trailer
I have not seen any system capable of giving out such a nice looking game.
Even Gran Turismo 4 HD on my Pana 52 inch gave out a lot more then anything i've seen.
The advantage of the PS3 is that most crap makers, bugish game developers will rather program on other systems.
Its hard to program but when you buy a PS3 you'll know you won't have to swim throughout the big sea of crappiness companies rushing out games to make money.
There will still be crap but not as much.
I'm just looking at gran turismo and its enough for me to build myself a car simulator.
I have had so much fun playing the gran turismo games.
Not some random crap I throw in the closet after 1 or 2 months of playing.

Have you guys taken a look at killzone2 yah yah the kiddi playstation sucks song onyoutube says that killzone 1 sucked ok.

I'm not sure...I just installed the plugin.
I tell you when you will see the quality of those vids you won't want to go back to youtube.
Just kidding of course because youtube has much more videos.
