i cannot have more than one iEEE 1394 external HD plugged in and turned on at once. (it is not the drives, i tested them on other computers and they work fine)

i have one plugged in the rear panel port, and the on board header. i can turn either of them on by themselves, but once the second hard drive is powered, windows will not read it, and it prevents my computer from shutting down or starting up properly..i have to turn them off, then manually turn the computer off. They also cannot daisy chain on this computer either. (they work fine on other computers)
:help:
would this be my hardware or my OS? they work fine on my other computers with xp too.

im running xp home with a nforce 680i lt sli mobo with an intel c2d E6600 processor at 2.4 g an 2g of RAM.

Are there two 1394 connections activated at the same time in the My Network Places or there's only 1 activated at the same time ?

im not sure what you mean..i dont have either of them on my network places.

when i go into device manager, it says i have two ieee1394 host controllers that are working properly. it pretty much just freezes or slows down my system as soon as the second drive is powered.

I mean to say, just right click on the My Network Places & click on properties.then you will be able to see your Firewire connections along with your LAN connection. Now, are theren't any connection named 1394 connection ? If they are there & disabled, try enabling them.

It may be caused due of any IRQ sharing problem as well but i'm not sure.Hope you get a proper suggestion from someone else here.

i like sush's idea of IRQ problems you may need to adress two seperate addys' to the one firewire controller for it to be able to handle both drives.
