anyone know how this zalman thermal grease is? should i just throw on good ole' AS5 or is the Zalman thermal grease more optimized for the mirror finish on the beast?

I think the 9700NT comes with the Zalman ZM-STG1 thermal paste which is much better than the generic white thermal paste.
This review concludes that Zalman's Super Grease performs similar to AS5.

yea, it comes with the zalman super thermal grease or whatever. i have a few tubes of AS5 laying around aswell as some good ole white grease for customers machines. what i am woundering is i know AS5 performs very well under non mirrored finish conditions. noctua even goes the distance as not to mirror there products in belief it will perform better liek this with such products as AS5. as AS5 is optimized for imperfect finishes is ZALMAN SUPER THERMAL GREASE designed for the mirrored surface. I.E. even smaller or less particles of silver and cermaic and such as in AS5

Are you sure it's goign to fit in your case?

07-28-2007, 01:31 AM
NOPE. but i will get a new case if i have too LOL right now im using a 35 dollar beast i picked up from a local retailer, there line. not a bad case design. but its steel and has a ferrari emblem as the button lol. OH YEA, its bright red too!

I would have to say use their grease if its mirror finished like that. Like you said AS5 is mainly geared towards coarse surfaces.

OK so the zalman fit like a dream!!! lol took me an hour to get the damn computer running again never bothered to check the manual for the front panel pin out just went and matched the colors! LOL anyways the manufactures of my motherboard and case never had that POW WOW they should have to decide on what colors to use where!! lol well once i figured out red went to orange, blue went to green and so on things were great!!
SO the cooler is a MONSTER!!! i used the AS5 on it, too lazy to give the CPU a really good cleaning and switch it over to the zalman grease(will do later when i switch the MOBO to AS5 aswell). So i just cleaned er up and went with some more AS5 and instantly before curing my temps are down 8 degrees! not to mention inside the case is orgasmic!!!!! all those black components on the red finished case interior is BEAUTIFUL!!! shiny silver zalman mirrory black muchkin PSU.! too bad the twin 7600gt's PCB are blue:frown: once the mushkin RAMS back in and chillin out in its black heatsinks it shall be a scene!~

actually i find when bringing ladies over its bst not to mention the computers :frown: i can honestly say ive bored my G/F to sleep before rambling on about comuters lol as for lights. as for lights,i hate LEDS!!!! i have a problem with disconnecting all of them in the middle of the night! lol i will wake up and they will bug me and i will honestly take whatever they are in apart to remove them.

Glad to hear it fits! ;-)
My 9500 fits perfect in my case, the intake fan on the side pannel is right in front of the fan for the 9500. If the thing were any taller it would be hitting the edge of the fan. :ahhhhh:
I used AS5 on mine too and have had no problems at all. Mine keeps my cpu below 40*c even passively cooled(it peaks at 38*c) :jawdrop:. Without the side pannel though it peaks out at ~43*c. :)

Eh sorry to hear bout your gf mate. Mine wants me to teach her about hardware cause she already knows a great deal about getting around in XP. :D

meh, i can deal with her not caring aslong as my 11 year old sis keeps up an interest! im teaching her right now everything i know! so far i have not really shown her anything much about OC'ing just explained what i was doing well she watched kinda thing( what a FSB is how ratios work and things). ive given her my old P4 with a radeon X1650 and 1gig dual channel ddr400 to get to know computer with. its a old ASROCK DUAL VSTA-775. right now im teaching her all the basics of how a computer operates and so on. surpisinglyshe is very interested is the cool thing! anyways just got back from my first run at OCing on the new MOBO, tis a dream!! right now i am only using a naked stick of old DDR2 533mhz ram. its using old D9 chips though so shes not to bad.
first attemt was a light one, just a bump to 1333FSB. need to see how this rams going to handle the higher clocks. its doing 667mhz@4-4-4-12 1T right now with 1.9V going up a bit next going to see if i can get 800mhz out of this stick:redface:

haha my gf is amazed at all I know about windows, and the way you can keyboard-shortcut your way around any obstacle, or customise it to your likings, she's learning her way around, but the main rig with leds in my room DOES bother her sleep, so I turn it off at night when she's here....;-)
PS lucky sister you have there...
My brother just calls me when he has problems with his pc and never remebers any advice I give him

Quit the chit-chat and get to OC'ing that thing, it's not going to complete the OC on its own.........:jawdrop:

So this micron sticks not to bad. im up and running stable at 1450FSB not to much stress on the board or CPU. but this ddr533 stick is stable at 725mhz right now with 5-5-5-15 timings. 2T this time though.taking 2.125 volts to get that speed from this stick, not sure how long its gonna hold out with no heat spreaders! hope the airflow is up to par in the case will check back with temps later.

It wouldn't matter if your memory had heatspreaders or not as you won't actually benefit from them unless they were actively cooled.
Speaking of memory with no heatspeaders: with flashy memory like this, who needs heatspreaders.

NOW THATS A HOT CHIP. so you are saying heatspreaders dont do anything? they def. increase total surafce area. figured they did same sort of job a passive NB or SB heatsink did. just increase area for heat disipation. anyways, do you think 2.125 volts is fine to run through a naked stick 24/7? damn i wish i had my mushkin back lol. i tryed for about 30 mins to get 800mhz out of the ram couldn't quit get windows to load stable. im going to give 800mhz a run in the morn again see if i can get stable with a 1600mhz FSB with this ddr2 533 value ram. cant even make the CPU or mobo break a sweat yet!

07-30-2007, 05:31 AM
tyle, i think what he was saying is that the heatspreader only helps when you have air flowing over your ram.
tyle6
07-30-2007, 05:49 AM
ahah, airflow over the ram is usually a good thing lol. i took it as activly cooling the sinks with a ram cooling unit such as the corsair memory fan.
Bio-Hazard
07-30-2007, 06:01 AM
As a rule heat spreader aren't really worth all that much...........;) Proper air flow inside the case is much more important. Pretty much a marketing ploy to sell more ram for more money. Add the fans to the Corsair Dominator that will help, would it help more than if the ram didn't have heat spreaders, maybe if you were running them at 2.4 volts....................:jawdrop:
tyle6
07-30-2007, 06:43 AM
ok so let me get this strait, apparently heat spreaders are a gimmick. naked chips properly cooled would probably be better off? direct air flow i take it, not a latent piece of aluminium in the way...

07-31-2007, 04:53 AM
Yea they dont do very much becasue you have to put them on with a thermal tape which dosent do the same as say thermal PASTE. So all in all, what they are sayng is true. Heatspreaders just make your RAM look cool and if your over volting them take the spreaders off and just lay a fan on them.

Handy to know. Thanks
tyle6
07-31-2007, 05:28 PM
yes, thanks! very handy to know. lol. ok will removing the heat spreader void my warranty from mushkin?
on another note. you would almost think someone would be developing a better thermal tape. this stuff sucks from what ive heard lol. now we ought to be able to make something that works good if not atleast "right" lol ceramic is not conductive and used in many high end thermal pastes. there has got to be a way to engineer a ceramic based thermal tape of something!
Bio-Hazard
07-31-2007, 05:42 PM
There are better thermal tapes out there, generally, the problem is that the better the thermal tapes works thermal wise, the worse it works sticky wise, just the nature of the beast I guess.
I use Bergquist thermal tape for all the heat sinks I make for my motherboards, it sticks fairly well, won't pull off the component when trying to remove the sink, transfers heat very well, at least the sinks still get plenty warm.............;)
I also use 2 different thickness of tape as well, 0.005 and 0.008, the thinner tape norrmally for single flat IC's and the thicker for multi chips setups that might be a little uneven across the mounting surface................;)
tyle6
07-31-2007, 06:05 PM
holy crap! thanks man, i would never have figured that out lol. now to try and find some of that tape. is it readily available?
Bio-Hazard
07-31-2007, 06:09 PM
Nope, not in larger size sheets anyways, you can find small packs of 1" squares at most computer shops, but larger sheets are much harder to come by, not to mention expensive for the quality stuff.
Just a little hint, go to the major brand companies and most have a one time free sample offer somewhere on their web page.................;)
tyle6
07-31-2007, 06:36 PM
OK soi found a few that offer samples, thing is im lost again LOL too many types of tape! whats best for my situation aswell as bonding random heatsink to random bits of memory.

thanks bio. ordered that one and some from bergquist aswell.
tyle6
08-01-2007, 05:35 PM
OK. so i am thinking of doing a quick review on some different types of thermal tape. see what one performs the best with the least mess. anyways, anyone have any good ideas for some other types of tape to throw in the mix? so far theres chomerics and bergquist on there way.

Thermattach™ T411 , remember, Google is your friend..........;)
tyle6
08-01-2007, 05:52 PM
the chomerics is the thermattach. i only odered the T413 from them. guess i will turn around and order the T411 to my moms store LOL. actually i was kinda thinking more laong the lines of the most generic tape out there. compare a couple "Name Brand" tapes to the everyday commercial crap.
Bio-Hazard
08-01-2007, 05:57 PM
That stuff is what Swiftech is using to replace the Bergquist on thier ram and MosFets heat sinks, so I would think that it's pretty good.
tyle6
08-01-2007, 06:01 PM
yea i was reading a couple quick arcticle that mentioned that. gonna put the 411 against the 413, aswell as against the bergquist. still trying to find one more "brand name" to toss in the mix. i cant find anything from arctic silver thats an actual tape, do they make it or is just the goop they have?
AHAH! 3M!! thats the third!
