I found this quite hilarious
My neighbours are stealing my wireless internet access. I could encrypt it or alternately I could have fun.

I don't have my network open but i do allow access for my neighbor since his is so unreliable half the time he can't connect to himself. It would be fun to mess with him. I guarantee i will be getting a phone call asking for help after a few minutes of that. He will probably think he has a virus and that someone has his information.

Lol im so going to do that whenever one of my houemates annoys me! When I set up the network I gave myself sole admin privileges, so they wouldn't be able to fix it without my help lmfo

I know my router has something similar to that with the trusted and untrusted zones, I'd have to take a peep. If I can't find anything I'll ask my lecturer for comp1050 (internet communications) I'm sure he can point in the right direction

That is brilliant if it truly works!
LOL! Thats hilarious. I would totally do it if my network wasnt keyed. But I bet that wont discourage some of them from using it anyways

Lol, I had to steal WiFi all last week at this condo we were staying at at the beach. I don't know who's it was, but it was nice of them to leave it open since we didn't think there would be any access at all. Least he didn't set up up like this. Unfortunately all I had to browse on was the Wii and it wasn't the easiest thing to browse on.

Router makers are getting more and more aware of that though.
My friend has fixed someone's problem recently jsut by setting a WEP.
Sadly it was a cheap router with not much instruction in the box and it took him hours to figure it out.
Well actually it was luck.
He setted a password and BANG it was now broadcasting.
As far as me I had the internet for about 1+ year this way.
Played games with a decent ping and browsed the net.
It sucked when it was snowing or raining outside though...

My neighbors router showed up in my list every now and then when conditions were right. I noticed his was wide open. His was still using all defaults including the default password. I went over their one night and set him up a password for the router and WEP. Not like anyone would be stealing access out here where we live, but I still wouldn't risk it. I think him using the default password bugged me more than leaving the WiFi opened.

Me and my friends sometimes would do drive by name changing.
We would just ride around town and change the name of a few routers for no reason...
Funny stuff...
I mean there was even a BMW dealer in the region with a wide open network.

One of my neighbors has a wide open linksys router. Interestingly there are two others that locked theirs down though. I haven't figured out which house it's coming from, but it's rather nice as I know they have DSL... when my cable goes down I just switch to their DSL service. ;)

I'm not very familiar with networking related things. But can a person open up their wireless network to "bait" you into using it so they can steal all your information? Is that a possibility?
Or lets say you are on a wireless network open to all (like on college campuses or maybe Starbucks), can another person go on and steal your info more easily?
Basically, I'm just wodering if it is safe to go onto these open/unsecured wireless networks.

I use PC-Cillin 2006 internet security which has an unique feature called Wi-FI Intrusion Detection.Using this i can password protect my network along with all the Wi-Fi security precautions like the WPA & WEP Encryptions. If anybody want to enter my network he'll need to provide the password which i've provided on my Linksys Router & in the PC-Cillin.

It can be very easy to steal your information over Wi-Fi if you aren't using any kind of Encryption Algorithms like WPA or WEP.He just need to search for an Wi-Fi signal by using the software that came with his Wireless router or AP & if you haven't used any of those Encryptions on your wireless router, his router will find your Router's IP & let him enter in your network at ease & then you know....:ahhhhh:
