View Full Version : NEC and Hitachi team to water-cool hard drives

Score one for water-cooling fanatics. NEC and Hitachi just announced a partnership focused on developing a liquid cooling system for hard drives. Let's take a look at how liquid cooling typically works, why it's attractive, and how Hitachi and NEC plan to liquid cool a hard drive.
In most run-of-the-mill liquid cooling kits, water is pumped across a cooling plate that's clamped on top of a CPU, much like a standard CPU fan is. The water is pumped across the plate, which is filled with mini-ridges to help dissipate the heat, and then out through another hose, also attached to the plate. From here, the now-warmed liquid travels up to a reservoir, then to a radiator with fans that cools the liquid down and sends it back across the processor again. It's a relatively simple process, and some water-cooling fanatics also choose to water-cool their video cards. But what's the allure to water-cooling?

So, what do you think about it guyz ? Are you ready to pay for it ?

Watercooling a harddrive...
Is it really worth it I mean.
I think its a little exagerated.
The only reason it couldbe good is if you are trying to build a fanless computer so its not noisy at all.
But besides that I think a little air cooling is enough to cool it.

There's been water blocks out for HD almost as long as there has been water cooling. They are pretty much useless UMHO as even with "EVERYTHING" water cooled that can be water cooled, your system still needs some sort of air flow to operate within the correct temp range, and this small amount of air flow is more than enough to keep you HDs within a safe temp range.
Now there are those extremeest out there that will water cool everything just to say that they did, it will cost a ton of cash to do it correctly and you'll have such a maze of tubing it'll be a wonder if you can get any air flow through the chassis at all. They would be better off dropping the HD cooler and modifing it to cool the chipset or video card, that would be money better spent. But that thing as it stands in the picture would be hard pressed to cool anything that's OC'd, it might do OK as a silent cooling solution for a stock system.

Maybe NEC and Hitachi should develope a CPU or video watercooler first before making a HD watercooler like that one which is quite huge.
Would I buy a all-in-one HD watercooling kit?.... Hell no.

How could Hitachi make a CPU/GPU watercooler werty ? They aren't in that business.Would you say nvidia to make Printers or scanners ?

Yet they making a HD watercooling kit... Do you even know what the topic at hand is? You should since you posted it...
Its quite clear now what your agenda is when you are posting all of these articles.

I'm right on the topic but i donno why you are saying that an HDD company needs to make a GPU/CPU cooler first. That doesn't make sence to me.And i think , you won't have to worry about my agenda. ;-)

Users worry more about cooling a CPU or video than watercooling a HD first and not alot of users watercool their HDs.
Dude you are confusing me with your choice of words. First you asked this:
How could Hitachi make a CPU/GPU watercooler werty ?
Then I said this:
Yet they making a HD watercooling kit...
If they are making a HD watercooling kit why can't they make a CPU/GPU watercooling kit?

Sorry, i'm not goin' to involve myself into more arguements. What you are saying is ok.Fine ?

Overkill. Hard drives run cool enough nowadays, and almost silent too. Older hard drives that burn my hands would benefit from this much better.....Other than that it's a complete waste of time.

I don't really get your reasoning here, this is a NEC + Hitachi venture here, with the later only really suppling the HD. If you were to do just a little research into the OEM water cooling field, you would know that NEC has been actively involved in designing water cooling system for years. So them coming out with a OEM type of CPU/GPU solution isn't far fetched at all, so of like a water cooled laptop solution NEC was working on a few years ago.
So there you go a few links so you can bone up on what company is involved with what part of the tech in this venture.

I could go on and on about this company and joint venture, but hopefully you get the point.

Are they good in what they are doing.
I mean your the master of water cooling here :)

Research is your friend, you can never have enough info IMHO if you're going to be making comments on public forums...........you could end up looking a bit silly from time to time, I know, I've done the same more than a few times in the past and I'm sure I'll do it again in the future.
As to NECs water cooling, I've never come across anything from them. All I know is that they are big into research of a lot of OEMs. I've heard that their OEM system that are water cooled sell in other parts of the world, just haven't seen any here in the US.

i am gonna say water cooling a hdd is kinda pointless unless its in 100 + f weather at least in the consumer market . lets face it you cant overclockem or tweak em to generate the heat .... all is needed is a fan to help keep em cool ...

Even if you lived in that kind of weather, water cooling wouldn't help you there. Water cooling alone won't even bring the HDD temperature down to 100F or any other pc component for that matter.

I think, just another way of making money or what. There are people who can invest a huge amount of money on their machine & there are others too who tries to run their PC with utmost cooling performance & they can buy just about anything to make their machine cooler even if it's not worth the money.of course me & you won't buy things like that.;-)

It was 99f here today (no AC for me) and even with my system OC'd my rig runs at or silghtly above air temp, granted I don't do any stress testing at those temps, but I'm still plenty cool for some UT action.
So there you have it

I'm posting in the forums thread because don't have a clue as to what you are talking about on the subject that you started, you've already proved that several posts ago. And to be 100% honest, I hope that Scott drops both "YOU" and me from the contest. And I wouldn't have a problem with that at all. All you've done throughout the contest period is post trash for the most part and piss off the majority of the forum members.
IMHO there isn't any contest that's worth the crap that's been going on here the past week. I was a member when Scott stopped the contest several years ago for the same sort of crap and wouldn't blame him if he was to stop them again.
SPAMMERs shouldn't be allowed to win at any contest.

I've read it and I've had my fill of your worthless posts, plain and simple. I think I know WTF I wrote, but you on the other hand are nothing more than a spammer that is willing to do anything and everything yo win at a contest. Thats easy enough to see form some of the other forums that you take part in........;)
If I sound upset and that I've lost my temper, you are 100% correct, worthless useless people tend to do that to me after a while when they continue on with their stupid ways. Do I care if I get dropped from the contest for saying this, not in the least, nor do I care if I get baned, it needs to be said and if no one else has the balls to call the kettle black, let me be the first.

To get back on topic...
I agree, I personally think this is stupid also. Not only that, but it would take up more space inside your pc. Then there's the arguement of getting one of those HDD waterblocks to connect to your current water cooling loop. But... I feel that it would just add unneeded pressure drop just to cool a few hard drives.
I wonder what the next water cooling kit companies will try to sell. Water cooled sound cards? :-?

Ya, it's not a good idea Timber.HDDs can be cooled by using case fans too as some has said & should be enough. And for the Water cooled sound cards, maybe one day,you never know.
