Seagate Hastening the End of the IDE Era?

Ars Technica is reporting (http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070725-seagate-plans-to-stop-manufacturing-ide-drives-by-the-end-of-2007.html) that storage magnate Seagate (http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/) is planning to stop manufacturing IDE hard drives by the end of 2007, and will focus production solely on SATA products from then on out.
In a way, this isn't that surprising—SATA (short for serial ATA drives) offer greater speed and efficiency than older IDE (or PATA, parallel ATA) interfaces, as well as features like hot-swapping and native command queuing. Plus (of special interest to computer builders), its use of fewer signal lines means that SATA cables can be thinner and considerably less intrusive, requiring less space inside the case, and thus offering a reduced impediment to airflow for cooling purposes.

Not that you're likely to witness the complete disappearance of IDE jacks on motherboards any time soon. Though a January report from iTnews (http://www.itnews.com.au/News/44879,booming-sata-market-looks-to-overtake-storage-arena.aspx) states that a full two-thirds of hard drives sold last year used SATA, there are still thousands upon thousands of hard drives out there with IDE interfaces, and they're still readily available for purchase. But even if IDE's around for a while yet, expect its waning popularity to decrease even more quickly now. After all, if Seagate is going this route now, can other major manufacturers like Western Digital and Maxtors be far behind?

And anyways more and more motherboard makers do not include much more IDE ports.
I only have 1 on my striker extreme.
Anyways thats slow legacy crap is got to end one day or another.

It makes it hard if you don't have a Sata drive handy.

Who doesn't have a SATA HDD anymore.
I mean if you don't then go get yourself one already :p
They sell for so cheap now.
You can get a 500GB for almsot nothing nowadays.

With more and more sata dvd burners on the market, there soon won't be a need for an ide port at all.

I've only got SATA drives in my rig, I've disabled my PATA ports in the system Bios.............;)

I only use it cause my burner is still IDE but sooner or later even those are getting ported to the SATA interface.

By the way Maxtor is Seagate. Seagate bought them.

Well that is going to make my life as a computer tech more fun. Down here is the south we still have idiot companies and people running Windows 98.

LOL......I still get alot of systems in with Windows 98 as well...........sooner or later they are going to have to do a large upgrade I think.

That is the same with me. It made my friend so jealous because he was wondering where the IDE cables in my case was and I told him that I had none.

There's lots of folks out in the world that don't even know that there's anything new out there. I guess they just happy with what they have until something breaks.

Always depends on what you do with your computer.
To tell the truth there was nothing bad with IDE drives.
They were slower but if you only surf the net it won't really matter.

It makes it hard if you don't have a Sata drive handy.

There are a gazillion of those little IDE to SATA driver adapters everywhere for just $5 or even less. I bought a couple years ago from someone's spare Abit accessories they were offloading, and have been running my few IDE drives as SATA drives ever since. Once I upgrade to Vista I plan to disable all the legacy IDE mode junk that SATA controllers are using and switch to ACHI.

I have a few if them but there are a pain to work with on Bench stations.
