VMWare surge puts virtualization in the spotlight

news analysis VMWare's stellar stock offering Tuesday shows that virtual machines are starting to add up to real dollars.

Virtual machines (http://news.com.com/VMWare+surge+puts+virtualization+in+the+spotlight/2100-1012_3-6202553.html?tag=nefd.lede), the technology that VMWare helped pioneer, allow one computer to act as many, whether it's a Mac running Windows and the Mac operating system at the same time or a massive server running multiple instances of Windows and Linux simultaneously. Once a niche technology, virtualization (http://news.com.com/FAQ+Detangling+virtualization/2100-7339_3-6177447.html) is expanding rapidly as businesses try to get more bang for their server buck.

And VMWare has made itself nearly synonymous with the technology.
"It's almost like Xerox or Kleenex," said longtime industry player David Marshall, who authored the book Advanced Server Virtualization and also writes the VMblog.com (http://vmblog.com/default.aspx), which is not affiliated with the company.

This is nice if you want to let's say try linux without formating your whole drive.
I did use VMware a lot back then to try out stuff.
I know its not a cool thing but you can use VMware to test viruses without damaging anything.
