DIRECTV Signs on With Current Group to Provide Powerline Broadband

Dallas-Fort Worth to be test subject of new Broadband Over Powerline service.

Cable and DSL companies will get another competitor in the high-speed Internet realm later this year. DIRECTV announced today that it will offer Broadband Over Powerline (http://www.currentgroup.com/news/releases/08.15.07_DIRECTV.html) (BPL) and VoIP services in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
DIRECTV signed on with CURRENT Group for distribution of its service to customers. As many as 1.8 million customers will be covered by the service over the next two to three years according to DIRECTV.
"Our agreement with CURRENT gives our customers another high-quality, easy-to-use option to pair broadband services with DIRECTV's video offerings," said DIRECTV VP of Broadband Evan Grayer. "By choosing this bundled option, DIRECTV customers will now be able to enjoy fast, reliable and secure high-speed Internet service anywhere they have a power outlet in their homes."
"We are pleased to partner with DIRECTV to offer them the ability to bundle their world-renowned satellite video services together with BPL high- speed Internet and VoIP services," said CURRENT CEO Tom Casey. "Consumers in Dallas will have a compelling new choice for their broadband service and, at the same time, feel good about the fact that the same Internet network is helping to improve the efficiency and reliability of the electric grid while reducing its environmental impact."
Customers will simply being able to plug their computer (via a powerline adapter) into a power outlet for Internet connectivity. According to CURRENT, its BPL service "offers equally fast upload speeds -- up to 25 times faster than other 'high-speed' services, and up to 75 times faster than dial-up connections."

Hydro Quebec was supposed to install powerline broadband in the "C" sector of Brossard when homes were first being built. They never did do it though.

Here's my speedtest results :)

I'm probably not going to use Cable soon.
I just received a letter from Videotron that they are capping the down and upload to 100GB a month and 1.50 for extra.
I know I probably don't go over that much but I think it just wrong I'm paying a premium price to get unlimited download and good speed but why would I still pay the same price if they are to cut me down to 100GB...screw that i'll use DSL.

I'll take fiber thank you. :icon_tiphat:

They've been trying to get this to work for some time now, the reason that it's not is because of signal degration. In the UK they have it since they use one transformer per 10 houses or so. The US uses one per house. I don't remember the numbers but it had to do with amperages and such. The signal quality here for it is just harder to do on.

But I agree with PPM,

YES FINALLY!!!!!!!!11111

....unless I move to a city with fiber :icon_tiphat:

All I know is that in the test areas out around Missouri, BPL is working real nice and simple to run and install. One of my friends works for the power company and installed several test areas........;) All I have to say is that it works fantastic and can't wait till they run it out in my area.
