my friend has a pd 940, a Asus P5LD2 Deluxe motherboard, and a Scythe infinity

the infinity's mounting holes should connect with the LGA775 4 holes. should just pop in

this is where the problem is. the backplate on the motherboard doesn't allow the infinity's mounting tabs to go all the way through, since when the tab goes through the motherboard, it doesnt go through the backplate which is much smaller holes and looks like you have to screw it in

question is, can this backplate be removed? he said he tried as hard as he could but he couldnt rip it off, and if he tried harder the mobo would have snapped.

any ideas would be amazing! i was thinking of getting a hair dryer and heating it up alot, and then trying to remove it. other ideas are welcome

i am not quite sure what do you mean the "backplate on the mobo" does not allow the mounting tab to go all the way. These holes are pretty standard and should go in without any problem. Can you post some pictures?

I think,he's saying that Scythe infinity isn't able to properly sit over the LGA775 socket because the mobo backplate isn't allowing it.As the mobo comes with that backplate already attached, you shouldn't remove that to install a cooler.Instead get a diff cooler if possible.Scythe infinity & some other coolers aren't compatible with some of Asus Stack Cool 2 motherboards because of the more thicker PCB design. You need to ask Scythe if they provide any adapter or module for the Stack Cool 2 mobos like Thermalright provides a special S775 RM adapter (optional) which can be used in Stack Cool 2 motherboards.

Most times if a motherboard comes a backplate pre-installed it is removeable. I have seen a few Asus boards like this.

Also, doesn't the heatsink you mentioned come with its own backplate?

thanks for the help, i used a haridryver and got the backplate off. the heatsink is installed now, (ITS SO BIG) and we boot up, but the idle temp is 55, and it only seems to be getting higher

i think that it isn't making proper contact, and we used the thermal paste that came with it. best bet would be to reseat it with AS5?

also, his case side doesn't go on, so he has to mod it somehow to fit it, although first we gotta figure out why its performing so badly.

The included thermal paste isn't the problem. Different thermal pastes usually perform a few degrees off of one another. Hopefully, the motherboard wasn't warped from the stress when he tried to pull the backplate off before.

we put the heatsink on, withouth even the braces, just set it on the CPU just to see if it makes contact, which it does not.

only the sides barely graze it.

ideaS?

returning the scythe for another product

So the Scythe cooler was the culprit here? So the middle part of the heatsink is bowed in?

Get the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme then.

either the heatsinik, or the motherboard as u mentioned, im really scared that its the mobo

Have you tried using the stock cooler that came with your cpu? If that one doesn't make contact either, then it could be your mobo. Unless you got 2 bad coolers in a row.... I also hope it isn't the mobo since that is the more expensive of the 2 to replace.

hes gonna go tomorow to get another one to try it out.

to install the original heatsink he would have to put the backplate back on, and remove the mobo to do it. we'll keep that as last resort

we just got the Scythe Katana II. it seems to be making more contact, but it still isnt perfectly flush against it. only the sides are grazing, and idle is 42 and load is 50

i think the mobo is bent, this weekend were gonna have a lan and im gonna let him borrow my XFX 650i mobo to see if it improves, and if so he can have it :D
