"Now Ars Technica is reporting Sony is planning an even more aggressive offensive to reconquer the console market. According to the tech site's "reliable mole," not only will the 80GB PS3's price be cut by a Ben Franklin, but Sony is also readying an all-new, $399 40GB model of the console, as was rumored earlier this year."

Wow, if this is true, it speaks of Sony's desperation to get back into the console wars to me... :? They just cut the price of the 60GB model, and now only have 80GB models to sell. Introducing at 40GB model will only further frustrate/confuse the consumer...

Introducing a 40GB model??? They just stopped making the 40GB model when they intro'd the 80GB model, so now they are going to start producing them again? Sounds odd, but who knows.

I don't believe it, it seems far too cheap for the console.

Microsoft wasn't able to make a dime one the xbox, and were still loosing money on the 360, considering how much more advanced the PS3 is, and they are "only" charging $400 for it?

They never had a 40 GB model.

If I remember it was a 20GB and a 60GB.

They dropped the 20GB and cut the price of the 60GB as they introduced the 80GB.

While the history may be confusing for the consumer in the store it will much easier.

2 models.
1 - 40GB
1 - 80GB

At $399 it will prove VERY competitve and should help drive sales.
The downside is this will lead to a longer stalemate in the format wars. Oh well.

I think this shows how desperate they are at getting market share and realise they are far behind the Wii and 360 in installed base.

You're right. I don't know why I was thinking the low end model had a 40GB in it. ;-) The 60GB was the only one I was looking for.

Not to be off topic or anything but why didnt the 360 Elite come shipped with an HD-DVD drive?

Because it would've cost M$ too much to change the manufacturing process & specs of the 360. Also, it would essentially create another version of the 360 for game developers which would have caused a dilemna: do they create a game with DVD or HD-DVD in mind?

On a side note, despite their support for HD-DVD, M$ would rather not committ to single HD format. They would rather you download your HD content from them via XBox Live ;)

As for the supposed 40GB PS3? Don't do it Sony, at least not yet. Give yourself some time to sell off the remaining 60GB stock first at least :?
