View Full Version : RAID Controller
Need help picking out a nice RAID controller for my server computer. I'm going to be running RAID1 (mirrored). I found this and it seems to have pretty good reviews.

Just a note, I'll be running Ubuntu, a linux based OS, so it needs to be compatible with it. And btw, do I need to buy any other softwares to get this card running my RAID setup? Or is it all included with the card?

With a raid card it's all done with hardware so ubuntu should see it as a single drive and you wouldn't need any extra software to set it up.
Most motherboards now come with raid functionality but it's actually handled by software rather than hardware so you would need drivers or software for those. I use software raid in fedora7 and i don't need raid functionality to do it either.

So you're saying that the RAID functionality on my motherboard will need drivers for RAID to work, but I would still need the card to run the RAID configuration?

Nope, if your mobo supports Raid, you won't need anything more to run Raid 1.Just install 2 identical HDDs & install the Raid driver that will come in a CD or floppy with your mobo & that's it.Your mobo manual will come with the information about how to configure & install Raid.Don't forget to read that b4 you are going for it. :)
