View Full Version : Why is the pricepoint for DDR3 so high?

Wow, I mean some of those modules are going for upwards of 700 dollars for 2gb! That's worse than the PS3!

I was thinking of upgrading to a Core 2 Extreme or Core 2 Quad. I was considering just getting some really fast DDR2 with mega low latency but then I saw the good ol' DDR3 but the thing is this ram costing more than anything else concerning the upgrade; even the second 8800 that I plan on getting is out matched in price by some DDR3 modules

Is it really worth it (yet?). If the general consensus is naysaying then I will simply wait for the price point to drop and while doing so I'm sure the Asus Blitz Extreme and Core 2 Extreme prices will cool off as well. Hopefully, nVIDIA beat is way ahead of game manufacturers with it's 8 series so I won't have to upgrade from that to something else and, that way, I just pop in another 8 and run SLI.

DDR3 isn't refined yet so the performance margine from DDR2 is small. DDR3 is probably expensive because it's still so new but I would really wait till DDR3 matures before I buy it.

Well it's not mass produced yet, so it can't be cheap. Anyway i've seen some benchmarks that show it's not worth it yet. Performance gain is virtually nonexistent. I would only get it if i were rich and needed the bragging rights. We'll have to wait for at least another year before going ddr3 gets justifiable.

I don't remember where but i have seen were DDR3 performs worse then some DDR2 modules. So a definate no DDR3 isn't worth it right now.

From reading a few reviews its pretty clear that DDR3 only provides a light performance over DDR2. AKA its not worth the money right at the moment. Like your original idea, go with some fast DDR2 as the money you would spend wouldn't justify the performance increase you would see if any.
