I have used both, and am currently using the SMP on my Core 2 Duo. Speed wise, should I be using the SMP console, or two applications of the console?

I think the SMP one is meant for quads not dual cores. It will work but i have no idea how efficiently, don't know if it's better or worse than two consoles. If i were to guess I'd say worse, but that really is just a guess.

Ye I was on their website looking up the SMP client the other day and they say its designed for multicore in general but they only recommend it for quad cores for now as there are known issues with duel's or something

I'll do a test and see which is faster and report back!

Let us know, I tried it earlier and it gave me an error of having 5 WU failed so it was going to "sleep" for a day. At that point I just turned the reg consoles back on.

From what I have heard there isn't a big difference either way, though for me the SMP client was easier to configure and leave alone so I just went with that, but if two console clients are more efficient I would be silly not to take the extra 10 minutes and configure them.

I think the problem with "duels" is that they are illegal in this day and age. ;)

Nonsense. A good 1 on 1 swordfight is still good and fun!

I've been using the SMP beta 1.01 client for a few days now and so far so good. 1 WU is worth 1760 points and takes me 2 days to complete(I turn off my PC at night). While you may do less WUs, your points will definitely increase.

The early SMP betas had some odd issues with dual-core CPUs, which was why Stanford specifically mentioned the SMP client should only be used on Quads.
I looked through the SMP FAQ and don't see this as being a problem anymore, as F@H has released several new SMP versions since this thread was created... it should be just as fast as running two consoles now. :) http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-SMP
